“Only certain things would trouble a man so terribly in such times…”
“Try finding out your girlfriend is an evil imposter alien.”
[has been watching him closely for the last five minutes…]
“What are you staring at?” Fitz raised his head and shot the other man an upset look.
Fitz stared down at the body that was just laying there, veins turned blue with the dendrotoxin he’d just shot into it. Jemma’s--no, the Skrull’s eyes were still wide open.
He took a deep, shaky breath, tears still rolling down his cheeks and he dropped the gun, causing it to go off one more time, sending a pellet into the wall. Bam! He jumped from the noise, then fumbled for his cell phone, quickly calling Director Hill. He had no time to be scared of the Director, he just needed someone, someone he trusted, to come help. When she picked up, his voice was panicked and trembling. “M--Director Hill, Simmons, s-she, she’s a--there’s a Skrull in my, in the apartment, I knocked her--it--out, I--please come here, please.”
“That’s not up to me to decide what I can tell you. I have orders.” she got up “I made you a sandwich” she smiled and looked around for a while before starting talking again “put that down” she said. “Or I swear I’ll make her suffer. Do you think she could handle being cut down to pieces ? Of course I’ll make sure to make her suffer for a long time before that”
Fitz’s gaze darkened as she kept talking. God, he wanted her to shut up and stop using Simmons’s voice, ruining it just by speaking. When she began the threats, though, he couldn’t take it--he immediately started shooting round after round after round at her from the ICER, his hands shaking but still kept steady enough to be accurate. “Shut up, shut up, shut up!”
This was useless but the smile had an effect on him and he seemed to realise that she had to be alive and well and that was enough for her. “She’s alive.” she said as if that was enough for now “Now…” she sat on the bed “What’s next, Fitzy ?” she tilted her head “Put that down, please.” a pause “God, I hate her stupid face” she said as she caught a glimpse of her face in a mirror
“She’s alive, but where?!” Fitz insisted with an irritated growl; he was horrified and scared, but more than anything he was PISSED. He was shaking with fear and rage and god, he was mad at himself and mad at this fake Jemma, and then she called him Fitzy and said she hated Simmons’s face and god. “What’s next is y-you only give me information. Tell me where Jemma is, and don’t say anything else.” He didn’t put the ICER down.
“I am Jemma now. Would you really hurt me ?” she had to act cautiously “I love you, Fitz. and you do too and if you accept that you will find peace.” she put her hand on the ICER “Think about this before doing something silly.” she smiled, a very Jemma Simmons smile. “I know you’re not a coward, you are brave and smart but you won’t shoot…You wanna know why ? Because i’m the only one who knows where she is.” she grinned
“No! You’re not Jemma! Don’t you dare even--” He broke off when she said that she loved him, and he cringed. When she put her hand on the gun, he knocked her hand away, wishing there wasn’t the wall behind him. Shoot, Fitz. God. Just shoot.
He didn’t. That smile... it was terrifying how... Jemma it was. He hated the way it made him feel because she was not Simmons, and the emotion he felt for Simmons was being twisted into horror with every second that this Skrull kept talking. “Wh... where is she, then?” Of course she wasn’t going to say, when it was the only leverage to keep her alive. But he was going to ask anyway.
“Charming” she rolled her eyes “You wanna know what is so amusing ? You thought she was one of us when, really, she was just scared and you left her.” she looked at him “Do you think she’ll ever forgive you for that ? For leaving ? Alone and afraid…” she smiled “We had good times together, Fitz. I was more loving than she ever was and ever will be” she moved closer to him “Surrender. You’re not violent.”
“Don’t you dare! Don’t you fucking dare talk about her like that! You’re horrible, you’re vile and--and you’re going to pay for what you’ve done to her, you hear me?” He was shouting now, trembling, with tears running down his face. How hadn’t he noticed as soon as she changed? Why did he leave her alone? He swallowed hard, trying to work up the resolve to pull the trigger. It wasn’t even a lethal weapon. What was he waiting for? “I’m not a coward, though! I--I won’t surrender!”
She sighed and raised her hands, trying her best to look frightened, he was pointing a gun at her. Well she knew it wouldn’t kill her. She smiled “I used that on her, you know” she smiled, referring to the real Jemma “It is actually so amusing that you thought she was one of us when she was just herself…and you left her. alone.” she shot him a look, amused. “She was…” she stopped “What am I doing…I guess i’ve grown attached to you” she approached him, the fact that she looked like her was an advantage “Come on, Fitz. The battle is already lost. Put the ICER down…”
His eyes widened. No. No. This couldn’t be happening. His hands shook, his finger on the trigger even though he didn’t dare pull it, not yet, but he wanted to. He was just... freezing up.
“I... I don’t--she--” Fitz tensed up when she moved closer, adjusting his grip so it was tighter on the gun. “Don’t. Just--don’t! Where the BLOODY hell is Jemma?! I-If you hurt her, or, or.... I’ll kill you. I’ll knock you out and I’ll get an axe and chop you up and mail your rotting chunks of flesh to SHIELD so they can use it for more research and we can rid of the rest of you monsters.”
“I just need to modify some things…It’s…” she chuckled “It’s technical, I mean…” she shook her head meaning he wouldn’t get any more explanations “Then if you truly love me, you will let me access the device” she smiled and kissed him, of course it was forced and pressed her lips against his with no passion. “Eat you sandwich. We’ll go to the zoo” she gave him a smile “Where is it, Leo ?”
It’s technical. No interested discussion, no suggestions, nothing but this really weird... obsessive fixation on the device and keeping whatever she wanted to do with it a secret. And she was being forceful, and the kiss felt dead, and she called him Leo, and basically there was too much evidence. No matter how much Fitz wanted to deny it, he knew. This was not his girlfriend.
“You’re not--you’re not Jemma,” he mumbled in a panic before he shoved her away, jumping up and scrambling to the nightstand where he kept an ICER in his drawer. It was a recent development, because, well. Aliens around. It was a great thing, too, that he was so paranoid. He pointed the gun at her and backed up. “You know where the zoo is, I handle the tech, you call me Fitz--s-so I’m going to ask this once. Who. The HELL. Are you?”
More rather, what the hell was she. (Even though he knew. She was an alien; she was a Skrull.)
“NO!” she shouted and pursed her lips and was way too agitated and then she relaxed “I’m…” she laughed softly “I guess I had a bad night, i’m a little grumpy. You don’t have to come, just…tell me where I can find it, yes ?” she smiled and ran her fingers through his hair “You would do anything for me, yeah ?” she looked at him intensely.
Fitz flinched when she shouted; he was on the fence between agreeing that maybe she was just having a really, really bad day, or thinking maybe... maybe she was making excuses. He bit his lip and looked away. “Well, ehm. You know I don’t like you touching my stuff, Simmons. Not my stuff, I meant my, my inventions--” He cut himself off and then gave her a concerned look at the question. “I mean... yeah, Jemma.” He resisted the urge to add I guess. He didn’t want to make her mad.
“I’m fine” she smiled. again. this was exhausting. She got close to him again touching his hand then his cheek “The device” she looked him right in the eye “I’d like to…” she paused “Modify…erm…” she shook her head and sighed “Do you love me, Fitz ?”
Modify...erm? Fitz’s eyebrows furrowed. She definitely wasn’t acting right, and then she just... changed the subject. It was starting to make Fitz really unnerved, that maybe she... no, no, she couldn’t. “We’ll go to the lab and modify what you want soon enough, just hold your horse so I can eat, yeah?” He looked down at the sandwich even though his appetite was completely not present anymore. Was the sandwich poisoned? “Ehm... of course I love you.”
She realised her tone was being unfriendly so she chuckled “Fitzy…I just want to check something. Please ?” she got up, smiling but clearly something was bothering her “You know how I can be…” she shot him a un-simmons-y look that was threatening.
Fitz stared at Simmons for a very long moment. No. This couldn’t be happening--she couldn’t be a--no. Fitz was not dating an alien. He remembered how upset she’d been last time, so he tried to not show his suspicion. “Ehm... I’m not so sure I know how you can be, now. Are you... feeling okay, Jemma?”
“Yes” she smiled and kissed him before tilting her hand, touching his hand gently “Fitz…Where did you put the device ?” she smiled again but it was forced, she clenched her fist “Where is it, Fitz ?” her voice showed signs if impatience “I know it’s in the lab, where did.you. PUT IT!”
Fitz shot Simmons a grateful look before starting to unwrap the sandwich. However, at her question--which seemed aggravated--he glanced up with mild surprise. “Oh, ehm, it’s--” he broke off when she started insisting, eyes growing wide with confusion. Why was she being so pushy? “Why? Do we need it right now?” He looked around, as if a skrull might be hiding in any corner.
“Fitz. Wake Up.” she kissed his cheek until he opened his eyes, once he did, she smiled “I made you a sandwich”
“Hmm?” Fitz blinked awake, slowly starting to sit up. “A sandwich for breakfast?” He smiled a little and took it from her nonetheless. “Thanks, Jem.”
She sighed. No it wasn’t enough for her, he needed to understand how insensitive he’d been. But how could she be mad at that face ? She bit her lips. “Just…What made you think I wasn’t me exactly ?” she frowned “I know I was acting weird but…you have to understand.” she looked at her vial and her smile disappeared slightly “Oh, well…We obviously don’t have a skrull around so…I guess, let’s just test how the liquid fit in the device”
Why wasn’t she just... dropping the subject? Fitz gave her an uncomfortable look, trying not to get upset that she kept going on about it. “Jemma, I--you were acting weird and we’d, ehm, just found out about the bloody shape-shifting aliens so I couldn’t... it just freaked me out, okay?” Wasn’t that a good enough reason for her? At the suggestion though, he nodded quickly, offering the small handheld device he’d made. “Well. Here’s the scanner.”
“I have it!” she answered quickly and just stopped. She wasn’t going to be nice and polite, no he didn’t deserve that “Stupid ? Yeah” she scoffed “You were mean, insensitive and made me feel like I wasn’t any good at what I was doing because I was scared…” she shot him a look “Am I right about that, Fitz ?” she sighed and took a little vial in her hand “Green liquid…It’s fitting…” she smiled a little
Fitz smiled when she said she had it, but then she started going off about how insensitive he had been. He fidgeted uncomfortably. “Okay, Jemma. I get it. Okay? I’m sorry. Really.” Noticing the vial, he peered at it and nodded. “Yeah. It is.... okay, well. How exactly are we going to test this out?”
