bev  knows  she  has  succeeded  in  not  having  a  fight  and  that  was  a  feat  all  in  itself.  because  tom  was  filled  with  rage,  he  was  stubborn,  and  he  never  took  things  lightly. honestly  she  couldn’t  remember  how  they  had  come to  be  like  this  so  close  yet  so  far  away  from  one  another.   that’s  probably  what  it  felt  like  after  getting  comfortable  with  each  other  for  the  better  part  of  a  month. “  really? “  a  treat  all  in  itself,  the  fact  that  she  is  able  to  get  out  and  not  work,  she  had  been  working  extra  hard  lately  just  to  meet  the  quota  of  the  company  but  dinner  and  dessert  sounded  fantastic.  and  she  is  sure  her  green  eyes  light  up  like  a  child’s. 

the  fact  that  they  did  not  have  to  fight  tonight  was  a  relief  all  in  its  own  and  she  moves  to  the  bedroom  with  excited  steps  peeling  off  her  black  outfit  and  finding  that  little  red  dress  in  the  closet  the  one  she  knows  he  adores  and  she  slips  it  on  looking  herself  over  in  the  mirror,  how  small  she  was,  only   nineteen,  barely  a  woman  but  not  on  her  way  as  an  adult.  somewhere  stuck  in  the  middle  of  being  a  child  and  she  fixes  her  red  lipstick  in  the  mirror,  her  eyeliner,  always  feeling  like  she  needed  to  LOOK  the  part.   brushing  her  straight  red  long  hair.   her  feet  slip  into  black  heels  and  she  feels  confidence  hit  her,  couldn’t  wait  to  see  his  handsome  face,   intent  on  showing  him  how  mature  she  could  become.   when  she  descends  the  staircase  with  elegance,   inside  their  shared  apartment  and  she  gets  to  the  bottom  standing  there. “  i  heard  there’s  a  new  place  on  6th  broad,  right  on  the  corner..  “  the  small  fight  they  had  long  behind  her  though  she  knows  it’s  something  UNRESOLVED,  she  would  take  this  feeling  of  peace  for  a  little  longer. “  they  serve  good  Italian,  remember  that’s  where  we  went  after  the  party  that  night?  you said  you  loved  Italian.  “ 

the fight is set aside. for now. as long as she behaves. he follows her to the bedroom, not paying much attention as he changes into the suit he knows she loves and excuses himself as the phone rings before she’s done getting ready. he hangs up moments before beverly crests the top of the stairs and he remembers that this is why he was so attracted to her. her beautiful, shiny red hair and those red lips. “is that where you’d like to go tonight?” he asks, hands slipping around her waist, pulling her towards him. “i do like good italian,” he grins, granting her a soft, quick kiss so as not to mess up her carefully done lipstick.

he doesn’t care that she’s so young, in fact, he likes it. she’s full of creative energy. creative energy that’s going to keep him wealthy for the rest of his life if he plays his cards right. he knows he needs to behave. to remind her why she’s with him. so his charm is turned on and he gives her that smile meant to drive her wild.

never  is  a  fan  when  he  is  angry  like  this  and  there  was  no  getting  through  to  him  but  at  the  same  time  it  seems  to  be  something  she  is  noticing  as  the  months  go  on.  it  is  something  she  tried  to  ignore,  rationalize  in  her  mind  that  he  just  wanted  to  protect  her.  just  like  he  said:  he  worried.  and  who  used  to  say  the  exact  same  thing? wets  her  lips  rather  nervously  and  green  eyes  reflect  one  of  worry  and  the  anxiety  she  feels  when  he  holds  her  tight  but  then  won’t  let  her  out  of  his  grip.  this  is  normal,  it  had  to  be?

“  i  didn’t  want  to  make  you  upset…  “  voice  is  straining  silently  and  trying  to  get  a  grip  on  her  own  uneasiness  but  she  had  seen  this  in  her  father  and  mother’s  relationship  and  things  always  seemed  to  go  BETTER  for  elfrida  when  she  just  agreed  and  so  beverly  finds  herself  doing  the  exact  same  thing. “  i  know  i  was  wrong  and  you  do  worry.  “  she  would  not  deny  him  of  that  and  her  green  eyes  look  up  at  him  somehow  begging  for  forgiveness  and  she  tries  to  smile  but  it  comes  out  flat.  “  can’t  we  just  have  a  nice  evening,  like  old  times?  “  lips  press  together  and  she  looks  exhausted  but  still  knows  how  to  use  her  charm  on  him  and  her  fingers  grip  his  tie  gently  fixing  it  from  it’s  crooked  state.  

He lets out an exasperated sigh into her hair, pressing a kiss there. At her apology and her admittance of being in the wrong, he rests his chin atop her head and smiles slightly to himself.

“I really do,” he says, the same soft smile on his lips. “Let’s go out for dinner tonight? Why don’t you change out of this black thing and wear that pretty red dress for me? I’ll wear your favorite suit of mine... it’ll be just like when we first met,” he promises. Always promising. Always.

He really doesn’t mind going out. At least the kitchen won’t be a mess and he won’t have to deal with that tonight. “We can even get dessert at that little place on 5th that you like so much.”

She has no idea how he suffers. How he puts up with her bullshit. Tom closes his eyes and tries to remember why he’s here. The rolex watch studded with real diamonds sits heavy on his wrist and his eyes open to find her red and puffy ones.

“I’m sorry, baby... I didn’t mean to snap. I was just expecting dinner to be ready by the time I got home. I was working late on your newest marketing campaign. I’ve been late every night this week... I was just hoping you’d have dinner ready tonight,” he sighs, though he stands, hands cupping her face as he pressed a soft kiss to her lips. 

His thumbs wipe away the tears rolling down her face and he gives her a smile. “Let me help you finish up?” he offers, searching her eyes with his own.

Do you have any idea how dangerous this city is, Beverly?” he growls, his hand still clenched tight around her wrist. His grip loosens, but it does not fall. “Don’t you know I worry about you?” he says, voice softening, less of a growl now. He wants her to feel he’s doing this in her best interest. He cannot let her see how good someone else may treat her or he’ll lose her for good.
