I'm a history major at Dryden Hills University, 24 years old and I play the violin.

If there was one thing that Roland regretted about his first two years of college, that is, those he had taken before his 'break' and his move to Grand Haven, was not finishing his elective courses. As it was, every college he'd looked at required him to take elective courses in Physical Education, Art, and Science. The Physical Ed. was easily passable and the art was taken off by AP classes taken in his high school years. Science, however, he didn't have an excuse for. Having put it off until the last possible second, his Junior year before getting a Bachelor's degree. 

That withstanding, Roland needed a Science course, and the only available was either a blow-off class like Biology or and introductory Neuroscience course. His choice reflected on his lengthy schedule and on his disgruntled attitude, particularly the morning he walked into class for the first time.

Roland took great pride in his grades and how well he did in each class, that is, how well he decided he would do. He liked to convince himself and others that whatever grade he got was product of his own will, as if he could choose every grade he received. So far, it’d been quite a good time in college up until it came time for required courses like Algebra and the ever-endearing science elective. 

Finding himself again ignoring the apparent ache of his teacher, he clarified, “I don’t like math at all, that much I know. But that really isn’t the problem.”

The last it was. That made things a bit easier, seeing most of the students shared Roland’s opinion on math. ”I see you performed very well in other subjects. Therefore, can I assume your results are consequences of, and only, your disliking of the course? Or you do find difficulties in it?”

"So, what might the problem be, Lemont? I’m not upset, just worried. Whatever it is, I hope we can handle it as soon as possible, otherwise you won’t save your grades in the end."

He figured he'd have to find a way to excuse himself of the grade. Not necessarily cheat an A for himself, just make the teacher forget he had it, to leave him alone about it for long enough to let him barely slip by with the minimum requirement of a C. He figured as well, that that would be hard to do. 

"Well, I guess you could in fact say that's the only reason, Professor."

Rubbing his eyes and wincing as he breathed deeply - shit, his back -, he tried to regain somewhat of a composure before turning his attention to the student near the entrance. “Roland, good afternoon.” he greeted him, raising from the wooden chair with an even more aggravated wince. You’re fifty, Weston. You should know better than to sleep on a damn chair.

"Yes, I called you here. And I think you know why." With a meaningful nod to the papers on the desk, he gave Roland a disappointed glare. "I’m not judging you, anyone has every right to perform worse at some subjects, but it’s like you’re not even trying. So… what’s the problem? Is it the class? Is it me? You simply don’t like Math?" The last was the most probable, although the others weren’t impossible either. As well as a million other reasons. But as absurd as it could turn out to be, he’d try to help the man the best he could.

Meeting Expectations // Roland & Weston

Weston watched all the students leave the classroom in a rush, some less than others, but being bumped into anyway. It was the last class of the day for him, however, there he stayed. He needed to talk to someone before going home. And by the time, philosophy class should’ve been finished. The person was probably coming already.

Roland Lemont. His grades bordered between regular and excellent in other subjects, yet in algebra, things didn’t look good at all. The proof was the student’s exam and assignments, which the professor took out of his briefcase with a frown. If Roland continued like that, he’d certainly fail, and even then, he never asked for more explanations or any help on his doubts. There must’ve been something going on.

Thinking of what he’d have to buy at the grocery store later, Weston flipped the pages in hand slowly, his vague eyes not reading anything. The place’s silence started to get to him, and no more than a few minutes later, he was nodding off. Until someone stepped into the classroom, making him wake up in a jolt.

Roland had decided at a young age that he wanted to go into history. Whether this was product of his own volition, his father's wishes for him, or his hatred of math, he couldn't be certain. He did however know that, in this moment, he only hated math.

It wasn't that he wasn't good at it, at least that was what he had convinced himself of. It was that he found no relevance in it whatsoever. The ever persistent question; why should a history major need algebra on any level?

He knew exactly why Professor Tucker requested his presence after his last class today and Roland knew his standpoint on the matter. 

Probably a little too late for his teacher's preferences, he arrived at the classroom, paper with "see me" written at the top. As he walked in, he could've sworn he saw the professor with his eyes closed and chin against his neck but decided against pointing it out in favor of saying, "You wanted to see me?" and stepping away from the doorway.
