when we met i was on my back [lily & james] march 13, 2015
The warehouse is... loud. It also wreaks of beer and body odor and thereâs a distinct wave of weed smoke blowing in from the right-side bleachers as Lily walks inside. She squints as she looks around, trying to figure out whatâs going on; sheâs never actually managed to attend a meet since Ted started coaching a roller derby team, but sheâs off work tonight and his team is competing so sheâs here, money for the bus ride back shoved in her pocket and her skateboard gripped tight.
Lily makes her way into the warehouse and discovers a roller rink surrounded by bleachers, most of which are filled with people. There are women skating around the rink wearing little more than booty shorts and crop tops, a look Lily has seen them sport when theyâve rolled into the restaurant to post fliers about upcoming meets. Lily stands and watches them warm up for a few minutes, mesmerized. She only looks away when someone asks if sheâs planning to move any time soon and she flips the guy off, then storms over to the set of bleachers closest to where Ted is standing. He has a bench full of women next to him, others scattered around him stretching and talking. Lily sits in the second row of bleachers and drops her skateboard on the floor, planting one foot on it to keep it still.
Ted spots her after a while and he waves; she waves back and shakes her head when he texts her to say he canât come up and talk. She texts back, Iâll see you after with a kissy face just to be obnoxious. She also responds to a text from Sev, then a few more when he continues the conversation. By the time Lily looks up again from her phone, the announcer is introducing the teams and everyone is on their feet.
The meet itself is... fast-paced and outrageous, women flying around the rink and crashing into each other seemingly without any concern for safety. Lily drinks it all in, her heart racing from the thrill of the sport. She canât believe she never came out before tonight; what these women are doing is incredible. Lily finds herself watching the women from Tedâs team most often, because they seem to be doing so well at the start of each bout until suddenly, theyâre not. The score on the board reflects that; Tedâs team is losing by a large margin and hardly anyone in the crowd is rooting for them, but Lily starts yelling the names on the backs of the womenâs uniforms in an attempt to help them rally, something that earns her a smile and a thumbs up from Ted when he hears her and turns around to find the source of the cheering.
When itâs over, theyâve lost horribly but they seem in okay spirits when they leave the rink. Lily watches them go, her tongue pinched between her teeth. She feels warm all over, like sheâs discovered something magical. When the row in front of her clears enough, Lily grabs her skateboard and vaults over the seats, dropping down on the side of the rink next to Ted. âWow, you never told me how fast-paced this sport is, dude.â
