so I've been working on a fantasy computer emulator entirely just because I'm a nerd and I'm really really thinking about putting out a sort of little "come learn with me" sort of series on Patreon while I do it and then releasing the executables... I've been having a blast so far, it's so complicated but so cool

hi if you’re reading this you’ve just seen the most recent post in a long line of Ro learning how to build a retro computer emulator on a fantasy architecture she vaguely made up looking a lil like 6502 and she’s actively learning how to make the thing work. I don’t know if I’m handling ROM right. I’m kinda treating it more like an initramfs and like loading it from ROM right into a RAM space? tbh that can be ok tho esp if I want to do something like the c64 did with letting the user write to the ROM range. which I’ll probably do to give the user more addressable RAM. the whole thing is unified bc why not so VRAM is addressable, ROM should be addressable, I’m still figuring out how to use the device range lmao probably just by programming peripherals in JS that then read and write to a specified range? that works right?

eh this is fine honestly I can just write a simple lil ROM (I cheated a lil the system call table is JavaScript so it kinda acts like hardware-implemented system calls rather than embedding the table in ROM) that loads up the basics, plops the monitor/BASIC into RAM at 0x0000, then sends the PC to 0x0000.

that’ll work, right?

as long as my CPU knows how to jump and the unit tests LOOK like it does…

AHA! THE PROBLEM IS WITH ADDRESS OFFSETS!

the assembler knows how to handle assembling programs for user space starting at 0x0000 but it gets confused when it tries to resolve branch addresses for labels starting in the 0xE000 ROM range!

…I’m gonna have to write the ROM by hand after all huh

of course now the lil ROM program I wrote to validate that the emulator runs had an invalid opcode in the first memory address. so. that means my assembler is still broken. dang it. guess we’ll write the ROM BY HAND!

but Ro, you may be thinking, why didn’t you just use one of the billions of 6502 emulator implementations that must be out there? there’s definitely open source typescript for that!

I didn’t WANT to I reply, stamping my feet. I wanted to make it HARDER. and the cpu isn’t a 6502 anyway it’s something worse that I’m p sure is both using 8 bit and 16 bit words somehow
