As you start to cry tears of a mixture of joy and complex emotions you can't comprehend at the moment, he pulls you to the side, wipes your tears away and tells you everything is going to be okay.

He asks what goth bands you like and goes to see what he has and puts a cassette in his silver boombox to make you feel more comfortable. Next, he dyes your hair black and shows you the Aqua Net hair spray he uses. He teaches you how to tease your hair and gives you a lovely bats nest.

He takes you to your first real goth event presenting as a boy. He introduces you to his guy friends who are regular night goers. So many beautiful guys of different shapes and colors. They're extraordinary.....and they're all unapologetically themselves. Different and unique individuals who all share a community of people who just want to enjoy the music together.

You all had a great time, discovered new music, and even talked to some girls! Your friend teaches you how to dance like a goth, and for the first time, you felt accepted, you felt safe, you felt yourself. You felt normal. A kind of normal that society deems as not normal.
