I've had to spend so much of my time and honestly most of my life in general dealing w people holding shit over my head that now I quantify everything like this .. I feel like I have to, to make sure everything either comes out even or I do more than I "need" to in order to make little debts go away. U can't rely on the goodness of people's hearts generally so I started to believe I don't even do things out of the goodness of my own, but just to make sure I'm not indebted, to make sure I don't owe people shit and to cover my ass. :( It's so hard to unlearn quantifying good deeds and shared things - even if I don't hold things over other people's heads (bc that's awful & I could never ) that's literally still how I think about things I do for people. I think of either good or bad things I've stacked up/accumulated. Either as a defense for if they get mad at me, or to prevent them from getting mad at me - all in my head but still real. It's really sad but that's how it is

As so many people have pointed out though, this is exactly how public schools treat bullying. Fighting back IS punishable and almost everyone heard some variation on “it doesn’t matter who started it” from adults in their life at some point so no wonder society’s ability to differentiate instigators is so fucked up

honestly, this is directly connected to the fact that most bullying is derived from some form of cultural oppression anyway (bullying disabled, gay, trans, & autistic kids, bullying kids of color, bullying poor kids, etc.). 

our schools teach children the rules of oppression and how marginalized people will be punished for fighting back in any way. and that’s because our schools are part of this culture, and that’s how it functions everywhere.

im extremely annoyed that the press is acting like these footage discoveries broke the ground and changed the entire game surrounding mike brown. as if before these tapes came out, we didnt know anything for sure cause theres never enough evidence to please some folk and so maybe he did deserve to die and maybe all the people who’ve been cutting up since his murder arent talking about anything at all.
