Today, we held a gallery walk of exemplary "This I Believe" essays written from the point-of-view of their summer reading book characters. Today, my students drafted "This I Believe" essays from the perspective of a character from their summer reading. I was blown away by some of the compositions, considering they are only in their second week of freshman year! Every Monday, students have "Meaning Monday" as a do now. I give them a word, the part of speech, and an example sentence. They have to define it, evaluate the connotations of it, define synonyms and antonyms, and then compose an original sentence using the word. This year, I'll be adding each word to a bulletin board with a QR code that links to the do now slide for that word as a refresher. Thanks to CNBC’s publishing of the transcript from Trump’s press conference we can analyze the fallacious reasoning in Trump’s rhetoric. First, we have Ad Hominem, or an attack on the character of the speaker. You can see he calls the reporter “fake news” in his impatient interruption. Who can take the president seriously when he introduces his claims with an attack on the media responsible for informing his citizens? Then, we have a nice red herring in which Trump ignores the changes–for the better or worse–on race relations during his presidency by discussing job creation. He attempts to connect the disgruntled feelings of people in inner cities to a lack of employment, but then never makes a solid connection to HOW employment will actually improve race relations. Finally, he employs a straw man argument, making a poor connection between figures from 300 years ago to the white nationalists of today who SHOULD know better. The reporter is clearly not asking if Trump supports a historical figure from 300 years ago but if the President supports the Tiki-torch carrying animals whose friend sped a car into a crowd of their opposition and killed a person.
Now, I know Trump does go on to say that he doesn’t support Neo-Nazism, but the reason he’s being so harshly criticized is because he uses so many qualifying statements that bury his arguments, implicate the victims, and fail to reprimand the criminals in a severe enough position.
This is why I teach English. This is why our goal should be to produce students who are culturally literate and responsible. This is why I will be incorporating nonfiction reading and current events more in my classroom this year.

For a few years now, I have been a fangirl for Cheryl Strayed. I loved Wild and Tiny Beautiful Things. That’s when I started listening to her podcast with Steve Almond based on the Rumpus column by the same name, Dear Sugars.
As most of you know, I’ve recently started my own blog, and I’d like to do a a once-a-month kind of series called “Dear Rookie Teacher” on there where I give out classroom advice on “anonymous” letters/questions.
Therefore, please start sending me your situations, letters, and questions!
I can’t promise expert advice, but I can promise sincere meditation on your professional/ professional-personal dilemmas.
