What matters?

              My grandmother is a wonderful person, she taught me how to play the game monopoly. She understood the name of the game was to acquire. She would accumulate everything she could and eventually she became the master of the board. And then she would always say the same thing to me, she'd look at me and she'd say "one day you'll learn to play the game." One summer I played monopoly almost everyday, all day long and that summer I learnt to play the game. I came to understand the only way to win was to make a total commitment to acquisition. I came to understand that money and possessions that's the way that you keep score and by the end of that summer I was more ruthless than my grandmother. I was ready to bend the rules if I had to to win that game and I sat down with her to play that fall. I took everything she had. I watched her give her last dollar and quit in utter defeat, and then she had one more thing to teach me. Then she said, now it all goes back in the box. All those houses and hotels, all the railroads and utility companies, all that property and all that wonderful money, now it all goes back in the box. None of it was really yours. You got all heated up about it for a while, but it was around along time before you sat down at the board and it will be here after you're gone. Players come, players go. Houses and cars, titles and clothes, even your body. Because the fact is everything I clutch and consume and horde is going to go back in the box and I'm going to lose it all. You have to ask yourself when you finally get the ultimate promotion, when you've made the ultimate purchase, when you buy the ultimate home, when you have stored up financial security and climbed the ladder of success to the highest rung you can possibly climb it, and the thrill wears off, and it will wear off, then what? How far do you have to walk down that road before you see where it leads, surely you understand it'll never be enough, so you have to ask yourself the question...

Bank bail-outs:

The Bank of England estimates that the total costs of bailing out the financial system is £1.3tr, or more than 10 times the entire NHS budget.The UK bank bailout accounts for about 1/3 of the global banking bailout.

3 years on the British government continues to subsidise ‘too big to fail banks’ banks:

£46 billion: the combined subsidy the ‘Big Five’ UK banks enjoyed in 2010;

£10 billion: of British taxpayer’s money was paid in indirect subsidy to Barclays

Lloyds, RBS, HSBC and Nationwide also enjoyed subsidies of £15bn, £13bn, £7bn and £1bn respectively.

The ‘too-big-to-fail’ subsidy for the UK’s largest four banks is 62% higher than the equivalent subsidy in Germany, despite the fact that the German economy is significantly larger.

Austerity cuts:

£83 billion: the amount of public sector cuts planned by the government by 2014-15. Effectively cutting the incomes of ordinary people by

6.2% for typical families with two young people on modest earnings (£37,000 combined income)

4.2% for more well off families with children at university (£78,000 combined income)

10.4% the average working lone parent with two children

16.2% pensioner couples

The cuts are hitting the poorest hardest according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies.

The economy has lost 2 million jobs since the beginning of the recession.

Babybook

It has caused me concern for some time, that the main use of facebook in the friend bubble I have amassed over the years since handing over my personal details to Mr Zuckerberg, is a constant barrage of uploaded foetus pictures.

I lambaste myself on a daily basis for even bothering to visit the site and for not accruing enough people to share my true self with or even for that matter accruing enough people I actually even give a shit about.

It's a tragic state of affairs when you concede to yourself you'd probably only bother turning up to about 2% of your facebook 'friends' funerals. I now have so many people hidden on the thing out of sheer annoyance at viewing the exact same images of them every Saturday getting pissed, professing there undying love to their partner or posting images of what they've just cooked, that I'm making a deceleration in writing to myself here today. That as soon as I return back to England. I am ridding myself of the time sink that is facebook. 

I don't believe I have ever been intellectuality stimulated in what must now have been surly hundreds of hours aimlessly scrolling through masses of shit.

The way I view our education system is described wonderfully in this poignant leaving speech by a graduating American student

doesn't it perturb you to learn about the notion of “critical thinking.” Is there really such a thing as “uncritically thinking?” To think is to process information in order to form an opinion. But if we are not critical when processing this information, are we really thinking? Or are we mindlessly accepting other opinions as truth?
