Everyone outside of USA:
some interesting Tudor facts for fans of Six the Musical:
(NB: please be aware that like with all history, some things are easier to verify than others, but Iāve fact-checked as much as I can)
-After Henryās death, Catherine Parr married Thomas Seymour, the brother of Jane Seymour
-Before Henry died, Catherine also took on the responsibility of finding tutors for the education of the young Princess Elizabeth (Anne Boleynās daughter) and Prince Edward (Jane Seymourās son). Princess Mary, the daughter of Catherine of Aragon, was about 27 years old at the time and so didnāt benefit from this, but she did benefit from Catherine Parrās insistence that Henry bring all his children to live at court and to put them back in the line of succession
-Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard were cousins. Itās unlikely they ever met, seeing as Katherine was about 20 years younger than Anne, and Katherineās father wasnāt particularly wealthy or high status compared to the Boleyn family.
-Anne of Cleves outlived Henry and maintained a good lifestyle as āthe Kingās most beloved sisterā. In Katherine Howardās short time as Queen, Anne was invited to court, and the two women treated each other amiably and without any hostility. Some reports say the two danced together several times during the festivities.
-Anne Boleyn was a lady-in-waiting of Catherine of Aragon, while Jane Seymour was a lady-in-waiting of Anne Boleyn.
-Catherine of Aragon was the daughter of Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile, two of the most powerful rulers of Spain. They were responsible for enabling Columbusā expedition and for establishing the Spanish Inquisition (aka they were not two people you should mess with).
-Catherine herself was well-respected. She was involved in Renaissance humanism, tried to get reform for poor relief in England, and even commissioned controversial works claiming women had a right to education.
-Anne of Cleves was on good terms with Henryās children, while Katherine Howard tried her best to befriend them (but was perhaps limited by the fact that her step-daughter Mary was almost a decade older than the teenage Queen).
-One of the properties Anne of Cleves received in her annulment settlement was Hever Castle, a property once owned by Anne Boleynās father before Anneās execution.
okay let me just add two more things that i find fun facts
-Catherine of Aragon was Catherine Parrās godmother, and it is believed that Catherine Parr was named after her
-Catherine of Aragonās parents were not only two of the most powerful rulers of Spain, they were the firstĀ rulers of Spain, as before the territory was divided in four kingdoms. The first two of those kingdoms to unite were Aragon and Castile, through Ferdinand and Isabellaās marriage, forming Spain, which went on to conquer the remains of the Iberian Peninsula that wasnāt Portuguese territory. They were also known as the Catholic Monarchs and they went on to ban both Judaic and Islamic practices, which further explains Catherine of Aragonās insistence in following the traditional Catholic rules when it came to marriage
Okay, but why isnāt six the musical talked about more?
Itās a musical with six female leads. You hear that? SIX FEMALE LEADS!! You know how rare that is in musical theatre right?
Itās based on the six wives of Henry the Eighth, which in history lessons are just like āoh Henry wanted a new wife so he just went to the next attractive woman he foundā and actually gives their side of the story! Like, women in modern times would not be happy if their husband just went āIām gonna divorce you to marry someone younger who can give me kids,ā so why would women in 1500ās be this accepting? Itās so interesting, even though we did look into Catherine of Aragon a little and the fight she put up to stay with Henry, but nothing else was said about the other queens.
Thereās so much diversity in the cast! Women of colour, thin women, curvy women, itās so amazing to see such diversity on stage!!!
Ermmm, itās a musical based on history!?! Like these were real women!! You know how many kids would be interested in history of there were more musicals like this!! Yes it may be inaccurate in places, but Hamilton also has issues with historical accuracy, and donāt get me started on the historical accuracy of Anastasia.
The sound track is such a bop, honestly I am living for this!
It was wrote by a couple of university students and ended up on the west end, do you know how much of a big deal that is! A couple of unknown composers have/had their musical out there with stuff like phantom of the opera, Les mis ect that is just crazy to me! I absolutely love it though and believe more independent musicals should be supported!
Go listen to it now!!! Itās free on Spotify! And honestly Iām so in love with the actress playing Anne Boleyn š
