Building Blocks // Rory and Mavis
With a bounce in my step, I turned the corner, my smile widening as I saw the academy in the distance. I didn’t know what I would be learning there, but today I would get to meet some new people! Maybe even make some new friends! Oh, I hope so.
Nearing the large building and surrounding campus, I noticed a large crowd of people bustling about, with tense faces, and some of them were shouting, shoving their kids through the crowd.
It made me sad, seeing so many people unhappy. I wished I knew how to make their day better. Concerned, I looked towards my parents.
Messing up my hair, my dad told me not to worry, already knowing what words would have come out of my mouth. So I didn’t. Well, I tried not to, that is.
Before long I was in the crowd, and we made our way towards a lady who was passing out name tags. She passed one to me, and handed a marker to my mom. I said a large thank you with a beaming smile and hugged her leg.
We made our way to a bench, where my mother passed me the marker and I quickly got down onto my knees, uncapping the ink and, with my tongue sticking out in concentration, I did my best to write my name. I had learned how to last week, but had been too busy helping other kids to perfect it.
After five minutes it was done, and I proudly beamed up at my parents, the “o” and the “y” straight but both of the letter “r” were backwards. It was a sloppy job, but my parents were excited nonetheless.
Making our way towards a tall man with a thick list in his hands, we were met with a scowl as he looked down at me. I smiled back and he scowled more. My smile dropped, confused. Most of the time my smiles made people happy, not sad.
I didn’t have any more time to ponder this before a blue sticker was stuck to my shirt.
“You’re in West’s group. Looks like he’s getting pretty impatient, so you should get on over there fast. He hates dealing with asshole kids like you.”
Not completely understanding what the man meant when he described kids, I didn’t have any time to ponder it before my parents were rushing me through the crowd, towards a group that was by a path leading to a back area of the academy.
I said goodbye and hugged each of their legs before running to the group. There wasn’t a lot of space, so I closed into the back of the group, next to a girl who looked a few months younger than me. My first chance to get to know someone! Turning, a huge grin lighting up my face, I introduce myself.
“Hi! My name is Rory! What’s your name?”
