besties are always a must! she’s warm and bubbly so i imagine it isn’t tough for her to befriend just about anyone. a best friend bond however probably is one of her few super intimate friendships. sure, she’s /popular/ but everything tends to be surface level. this best friend(s) know her rather well beyond the super outgoing exterior.

      “come oooon, just one game. we have nothing else to do.  i don’t wanna watch you read that book the entire night.”  her room smells like rory’s signature cotton candy perfume and the yankee candle that sits on top of her dresser. labeled ‘summer daydream’  the candle is one of the very many gifts from her students that decorate just about every corner of her room. a kid’s painting paint of her here. a papier-mâché pot of sunflowers there. chaos scattered about the otherwise yellow themed room. she plops down onto her bed with a monopoly box in hand. “you can even be the lil dog!” rory must’ve set the record  for hours for bothering darcy. nonetheless, she knew deep ( deep ) down he didn’t mind her usual excitability. “i’ll be the top hat.” she says, already starting to pull out the game board. “so, tell me. how’s job hunting? is that what you’re doing lately? or are you just kinda coasting? i respect it. i know post-graduation is not super easy.” rory rambles on as she straightens out piles of monopoly money.

they  had always been each others better half,  there was something about the duality of them together that had something incredibly good and incredibly bad going.  and although rory was her moral compass it was hard to offer morality to someone with skewed morals.                                                      “very beauty and the beast,” muses karlie.  they had completely opposing styles and karlie would never pull off rorys uniform but it was her own.  only rory could pull off such a disney princess aesthetic ,   “you always impress i don’t know what you’re talking about.”  now karlie wasn’t one for compliments,  in fact most of the time a compliment felt like a frog was stuck in her throat.  but when it came to those very few around her she showered them in praise because she truly believed what she was saying.  “if only my suitors treated me this well,”  she hums sipping from the glass craddled in her hand.                                   “an expensive taste,”  she corrected with a single nod before she rolled her eyes with a chuckle.   “that was like a hundred years ago what’s she so pressed for ??”  she asks looking down at her drink.   “i can’t even remember the boy i was with last weekend.                                                       “so ??” she asks raising her brows,  “everyone and darc has  had a   t h i n g,”  shrugs karlie.  the brunette just laughs and tilts her head as she listened to the beauty before her.  karlie agreed,  men weren’t worth fighting over.  there were too many of them and they were too easy to get.  “god no i’ve never met a man worth breaking a nail over,” she states.   “it would’ve been more exciting if she punched darcy.”

              playfully, she curtsies at the other’s compliments. their opposing tastes ( while drastically different ) always seemed to compliment eachother. rory could never see herself wearing half of the things karlie did. yet, admittedly, karlie’s luxurious style was admirable to say the very least. “just imagine if you just dated me instead.” she flirts jokingly, displaying a toothy grin before bringing her wine glass to her lips.               “right. like... caviar.” of which, rory found particularly disgusting. a childhood filled with picking the ingredient off of the fancy dishes her mother would place in front of her.  that, subsequently, rory would spend entire dinners flicking the remains at darcy’s head when their parents weren’t looking. “i don’t know. maybe it meant something to her. but, as we both know,” rory points to the other after taking another sip of her drink. her glass of mascato growing nearly empty.  “... imagine, if i was still hung up on leo! now that would be sad." after thinking back to her previous relationships, she decides finally “milo would be a valid exception. but he’s not an asshole.”  she hops off the countertop to check on the stove. savory aromas continue to fill the space around them.  “it’s just like, yknow -- why? darcy’s moved on. i guess you can be mad at your cousin for dating your ex sure. but that’s an issue you talk about! it’s not really worth a possible assault charge,” rory rants, flipping over sizzling steaks.            “that’s what i’m saying!” rory chimes, finally speaking with someone who saw her point of view. “everyone knows everyone. yknow, your ex is bound to date your friend. get over it.” she tosses her head back, laughing. while she’d probably be equally as annoyed, at least if darcy got punched they’d have a story to tell at the next family gathering. “yeah, maybe.” rory shrugged. “it’s all just super petty. that’s all. and like, i’ve had to avoid one of my roommates because of this whole... debacle.” she liked living with vanessa and juno. she didn’t particularly like giving the silent treatment. despite being scarily good at it. “so you can imagine the stress i’m under.”

there were many things that differentiated the two girls,  mainly the fact that rory was completely self sufficient and karlie hated even driving herself places.  but out of everyone rory was probably the only one that could balance the self proclaimed princess out.  she adored rory,  she would claim besides darcy it was her only actual friend.                                       “this is cute,”  she giggled at the girls little apron,  they had completely opposite and distinct styles. but despite their very obvious differences rory was her other half.  the one person who understood her beyond the glitz and the glamour.   “oh please i put it together in 45 minutes,”  which yes, was quick in karlie’s world.    “ugh i love you,”  she expresses with this growing and glowing smile as she followed the shorter one in.    “champagne ??  baby girl you know me too well,”  wondering over to the girls fridge to fetch herself a glass.   she pops the bottle before turning and leaning against the counter,  pouring herself a glass that was a little too full.   “i saw,”  she commented before taking a sip.    “so she’s still in love with darcy and violence is the answer,”  the smile on her face was a little too big,  gossip and chaos was truly her favourite pass time.  “i love it here.”

         back in school, you couldn’t expect to see one without the other. tweedle dee and tweedle dum. regina george and gretchen wieners. two peas in a pod who waltzed around with mind blowing confidence. rory regularly providing the much needed yet effortless sugar-coating to the other’s more hasher tendencies.     “ you like? ”  she does a small spin to really show off her apron like a true disney princess. the equally girlish sundress underneath twirling along in the air. “i knew you were coming over so i thought i’d dress to impress.” she jokes. “if that’s forty-five minutes, though, i can’t imagine how stunning you’d look in an hour.” focusing her attention back onto the boiling potatoes on the stove. still, a sneaking grin puts at her lips. she loved karlie right back. “it’s been like twenty-something years now. i know how to treat my bestie like the queen she is.” she teased with a short chuckle.       “pretty much. you know, darcy’s..” rory pauses, searching for the right word for a moment. “an acquired taste.  so, the breakup didn’t go well. and i guess she’s still pissed about their whole short term fling from highschool.” rory details, propping herself up onto the counter top for a moment. taking a slow sip of wine, rory  interrupts herself after remembering a key piece of information she didn’t want to leave out. “oh, and sawyer and darc had a thing or whatever in college. and you know how sawyer is nessa’s cousin so... you can imagine how messy things got.” she shrugs. “i mean cheekbones and all, darcy’s not worth punching my cousin over. or, no man i’ve dated is... actually.”  then again, she’d never seen any romantic appeal in darcy. he was essentially her brother.  “what got me was the-- apology. if you can even call it that.”

the clacking of high heels against apartment complex hallway floors echoed around her,  her tall frame carried through the empty halls as she made her way towards rory’s apartment. a pastel pink button down shirt tucked in without a single line or bump into a short and skin tight pencil skirt. a pink headband followed by pink heels to match,  she had to be dressed to the nines at all times, after all, she was known for her outfits.  karlie was always overdressed and that’s how she liked it,  the star of every room if she could help it.                                                     three solid knocks to the front of her best friends door before taking a step back and touching up her lip gloss.  eyes beaming as the gorgeous girl opened up to her —   “ hey babe !!”  she cooed wrapping her up in a hug, an air kiss to either cheek,   “do you have wine ??”  she asked slipping into the dark haired womans’ apartment,   “because i have questions.”

           floating around her kitchen, rory hums to herself along to the music playing from her phone. cooking was rory’s daily ‘me time’ . the perfect escape from everything else. time to just focus on herself. cooking for her friends brought her even more joy. her frilly yellow apron catches in the breeze as her hips sway to the rhythm. clearly, this is one of her happy places. something about preparing a meal for the people she loved -- especially, karlie -- brought her unbelievable joy.         after taking a sip of white wine from her glass, rory jumps at the sound of the door. finally! rushing over to the door with the brightest grin on her lips, “karls! hello yourself, honey. oh my god, you look beautiful.” as always, she might’ve added. but, she figured the other knew that. rory expresses her admiration for the other just about every time they see eachother. “why, of course. what kind of host would i be?” she opens the door wider to allow karlie in.  “we’ve got white and red -- oh, and i think there’s champagne in the fridge. you know where the glasses are. help yourself.” she details, hurrying back to the kitchen to tend to the bubbling pan on the stove. “oh god,” rory groans alreadying knowing what karlie’s questions would likely be about. “in my defense, i told her to drop it.”

      her  eyes  were  glued  to  the  screen  as  she  politely  -  to  the  best  of  her  ability  -  shooed  her  friend’s  generous  offering.  who  knew  action  movies  could  be  so  …  good  ?  a  far  cry  from  the  usual  13  going  on  30s  and  10  things  i  hate  about  yous  they  often  binged.  perhaps  autoplay  was  a  blessing  sometimes.  keyword  :  sometimes.  as  the  anticipation  increased,  so  did  juno’s  chewing  —  the  blue  and  red  gummy  worm  wiggling  up,  up,  up  until  the  tail-end  hit  her  puckered  lips.  she,  in  turn,  tipped  the  bag  of  sour  critters  in  rory’s  direction.  “  all  i  know  is  that  samuel  l  jackson  put  a  chip  in  colin  firth  or  something  and  he  just  took  out  an  entire  church.  like  …  ”  she  was  like  a  kid  that  just  got  off  their  first  rollercoaster  ride,  thrilled  and  lively,  her  hand  extending  to  address  the  screen.  “  that’s  crazy  right  ?  that’s  -  ”  she  basically  pulled  a  hereditary,  another  inch  and  her  head  would’ve  snapped  right  off  of  her  neck  that’s  how  quick,  how  aggressive  she  swung  to  face  her  roommate.  “  what  ?  ”  a  pause.  she  didn’t  hear  that  right,  she  couldn’t’ve.  could  she  ?  “  hold  on,  hold  on,  hold  on  ”  she’s  quick  to  pause  the  film,  “  rory  …  where  is  this  coming  from  ?  ”  a  haphazard  toss  sent  the  remote  flying  before  she  readjusted  herself  on  the  couch,  legs  criss-crossing  as  she  scooted  further  back.  “  what’s  wrong  ?  what  happened  ?  ”  an  ever-knowing  sigh  fell.  “  does  this  have  something  to  do  with  the  fourth  …  ?  ”

        politely declining the other’s sour candy offer with a shake of her head. she always disliked sour foods. curiosity fills her, paying more attention to the puzzling movie than before. juno’s own interpretation more entertaining than what rory was previously seeing. a snorty laugh leaves her, “that’s gruesome. i like samuel. isn’t he like a spy for superheros or something? where’s the eye patch? what does that have to do with the king, again?” rory seems to be melding the plots of the few avenger’s movies she seen and this movie together. if it wasn’t the sappiest, tooth-ache inducing, gooey-romantic comedy movie... rory was less than interested. still, it hardly mattered what was on the tv. juno’s company was all she really required. the other’s surprise at her question ushers in a short giggle from rory. “no, no it’s just,” she huffs ( a little dramatically, albeit ). “okay kind of.” if juno were someone else she might’ve changed the subject. but, rory knew there was no use in hiding it now. besides, she trusted juno quite a bit. “i wasn’t too hard on nessa, right?” rory doesn’t take pleasure in being unkind. but her fuse is equally as short as she is. after seeing whatever she deemed as injustice... there’s hardly anyway to deviate her stubbornness. guilt, however, naturally surfaces once the dust settled.  “i know it’s like... silly. but, yknow! i love darcy and sawyer, and it’s all just... shitty yknow.”
