today, 478 years ago, katheryn howard was executed, after henry created a law specifically to be able to kill her.

but there’s more to her than that. she loved dogs, and dancing, and gave generous gifts to her friends. she was bright and friendly and kind, helping those who needed it and begging for the lives of some who’d been sentenced for execution. she was so young but incredibly brave despite everything that had happened in her short life, and I hope that (after years of being portrayed incorrectly) she somehow knows that people are finally understanding her and hearing her side of the story.

at around seven o’clock in the morning on february 13th, 1542, katherine howard was escorted out of her cell and onto a scaffold on the tower green. the february air was chilly, but a small crowd had gathered nonetheless to watch the execution of the fallen queen. katherine dipped her head into the curvature of the executioner’s block the way she had painstakingly practiced the night before. a witness to the execution said that she died well. katherine was beheaded with a single blow of an axe. it is likely that she never reached her twentieth birthday.
