winnie's a comedy star with a background in dance/stage performance, william's an expressionist darling.
their marriage was arranged by their studio. they'd decided that william needed a wife to hopefully put to rest the (entirely true) rumors about his sexuality that had started leaking out to the press. winnifred was available, and the suits thought they could get some cute headlines out of the comedy-tragedy thing. w&w were somewhere between acquaintances and friends at the time, but they both saw the benefits that would come from the marriage and agreed with little resistance. they grew close after their marriage, but still needed a reminder from the studio to hurry up and have a baby already.
