jordan's family lived in wrensted when she was born, and still when her little brother was born seven years later.

jordan was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was six years old after stints of insatiable thirst and frequent fatigue.

when jordan was eight, her parents divorced and she moved to california with her dad and little brother (cameron).

during the years she was in california, jordan returned to wrensted every school vacation (summer, spring, christmas, etc). to see her mom and friends.

jordan was pen pals with some of her closest friends from wrensted, sending them letters and postcards regularly. as well as calling them on the phone often.

when jordan was nine, her dad (kyle) introduced them to his new girlfriend (holly). she moved in with them the very same day. two years later, the two were ready to marry. jordan and holly got along well, and jordan was the flower girl at the wedding, and cameron was the ring bearer. everything seemed to be going well, from her perspective.

things took a turn for the worse a few months later, when kyle and holly announced that they were expecting a baby (jordan's younger half sister kailey). jordan was excited, but overheard her dad and mom (samantha) on the phone later that night. it was essentially an argument regarding custody, in which kyle was asking for samantha to take one, if not both, of their children fulltime with him having visitation during school vacations instead. samantha seemed to be refusing.

jordan took this to mean that neither of her parents wanted her or cameron, which she has never told her brother about.

jordan protects cameron and kailey both, at any opportunity she can.

when it came time for a custody hearing, and jordan was asked where she wanted to live for the courts consideration. she tearfully asked to live with her aunt alisha, much to everyone's surprise.

in the end, full custody of jordan was given to her mom, and cameron remained with her dad. no one in wrensted would know her parents didn't want custody, she doesn't talk about it.

jordan went back to school in wrensted when she was twelve, rekindling some friendships, losing others, and gaining even more.

during this time, jordan neglected her own health, and ended up in the hospital after passing out during gym class due to low blood sugar.

jordan visited her dad on some school breaks, but felt betrayed by both him, holly and her mom. if she did go, it was to visit kailey. but, most of the time, she stayed at her mom's for vacations so she could see cameron.

jordan resented being separated from her siblings.

jordan was pretty motivated to not live under either of her parents' roofs, so she started training to be an emt when she was sixteen (with parental permission). jordan was afraid of some of the more gruesome things she might encounter in the field, and tearfully resigned from her training three months later. her instructor and her had a long discussion, and they encouraged her to consider adjacent fields.

jordan instead began working as an emergency dispatcher at 18. she still works there today. as an empath, the job is emotionally draining for her, but she feels like she's making a difference.

jordan is still the youngest of all her coworkers.

leaves lil notes for people. words of encouragement. little “good luck today, even though i know you don’t need it! you’re going to be great!!” note in your car before your first day at a new job. “i love you’s” to all her friends, tucked into secret locations that may never be found (and she’s okay with that, the vibe is still there).

Jordan had been sitting on Justice's lap for only a few minutes before batting her eyes and asking about karaoke. Silly Justice, thinking Jordan was going to be taking a break!

Her chin had only been resting on Jordan's shoulder for two seconds before she had to lift back up again, red-rimmed eyes blinking slowly. Maybe Justice shouldn't have smoked before the THC drink kicked in, but it was clear to anyone who saw them in a clear light they were blissed out. It's what made the answer so easy, compared to if Jordan had asked an hour or so earlier: "what're we singing?"

jordan smelled like a mixture of citrus and vanilla, like an orange creamsicle or a lemon bar. it wasn't really an intentional choice on her part, but rather a result of her searching for the most sustainable (and, of course, effective) hygiene products available locally. regardless, she assumed the way she smelled was a fact that justice likely knew. especially now that jordan had been sitting on their lap. jordan actually assumed most of her friends probably knew. she was a very affectionate person, which meant she had no issue with platonic cuddling, hugs, or general close proximity. it was kind of her thing.

"oh, that's a good question." classic, impulsive jordan. not having any sort of plan made before making a request. of course, a normal person would've expected the follow up question. but, this wasn't a normal person. this was jordan... and she was admittedly a little high too. she hummed in thought. "do we want to sing something upbeat to bring up the energy? or we could sing something we can pour our souls into... like musical therapy. or maybe a classic duet that will make everyone think we're secretly in love?"

　　♡　　there had plenty of distractions available to distract georgia from the reality of her recovery .  the fact she was trying to play it down to not worry her father. becoming carrie at the sweetheart’s dance was the result of an anti - valentine protest to this hallmark holiday. right place at the wrong time ! this had been an unfortunate accident involving storm debris and slippery terrain.

all very normal things that pointed to bad luck rather than being harassed by a murderer !

then, there was also the fact that she could focus on her friends. two people to bedazzle slings with, and william by her side. if she kept herself busy enough, she wouldn’t have time to pity herself. it mostly worked. until she couldn’t spot her students tumbling. or demonstrate anything in class.

or dance as much as she wanted to — the way she wanted to — at a party !

luckily for georgia, there were plenty of excuses to slip away that didn’t include having to admit she was in pain or frustrated. places to go, people to see, lipgloss to reapply. currently the sweet treats laid out upstairs. and speaking of sweet — “ hey angel, ” georgia greeted. “ have you tried these strawberries yet ? “ followed by picking one up to hold it out towards jordan. technically it was usually goddesses rather than angels… and it was usually grapes, but it was close enough !

jordan had left her sling, which georgia had helped her lovingly bedazzle, at home this evening. according to her doctor, she didn't really need it anymore. regardless, she was still favoring her other arm when possible, and found her shoulder to be pretty sore with excessive use. while she danced, she kept her right arm at her side (for the most part... she might've gotten carried away a time or two). something about not being able to use both of her arms at will made dancing feel just a touch more awkward than usual, but it was nothing she couldn't get past.

there was karaoke to sing and, thanks to tilly's expertise in party planning, plenty of vegan treats for her to eat.

as if on cue, georgia held a chocolate covered strawberry, made with vegan chocolate, out to jordan. "hey, you!" she responded in return, taking the strawberry excitedly. "i haven't, but saying they look heavenly would be an understatement." jordan gushed, before taking a bite from the chocolate covered fruit. sure enough, they were absolutely divine. "to die for, truly. did tilly make these or order them?" then, in a whisper, "do you think she'd notice if i walk out with whatever's left of the tray later?"

"from matching slings to matching dresses," jordan mused, in reference to their vaguely coordinating outfits. "we're so in-sync." she said it as if the slings were a fashion statement, rather than a result of their shared trauma. "you look absolutely angelic, by the way. oh, and speaking of n'sync... which of their songs do you think would be best for karaoke?"

lights reflected off the golden glitter on jordan's skin, similar to the way it reflected off the disco ball above them. her shoulder was healed enough to leave the sling she and georgia had bedazzled at home, but she had still been avoiding too much movement while dancing. jordan, predictably, was enjoying herself. "will you sing with me?" jordan asked justice, tilting her head toward the karaoke machine, batting her eyelashes and pouting at her friend.

　　♡　　“ well, luster is my specialty . ”  realistically, it was something jordan would have probably said to anyone, but it was nice to pretend. the two had always gotten along. considering how similar they were, and the kind of people they were, it seemed pretty impossible to imagine them not. due to her line of work, jordan knew about things that barely anyone else did. despite all of it, they weren’t the closest. jordan had a warmth about her that made that easy to ignore as the new distance from blythe and anthony brought on a chill. the feeling of the other woman’s shoulder against hers brought out a soft round of laughter.

of course, the ideal was that william got to be the one to tell jordan. not that she thought either of them locking it down was really gossip worthy. nor that tag would bother to deal in something so trivial. even misplaced good intentions were unlikely considering she couldn’t think of anyone he would tell before her. maybe eliza, just due to the proximity. but they didn’t seem to talk that much. not enough to get in before william. the people that georgia has been planning to tell first had ended up derailing her night, so the cards had been unintentionally held close to her chest. william, thankfully, seemed to be the likely source. “ that is a serious accusation, jordan yates. tell me, what did this little birdie look like ? ” her hand reached up to gesture height, though it was probably far from accurate. " about yay high ? pretty eyes, prettier smile. ” then, her head tilted to the side in consideration. “ beak ? ” did jordan care about the bird analogy that much ? then, explicitly, “ from william, right ? ” even though she had ruled out pretty much every other option, it wasn’t certain until she asked. “ but thank you. we’re really happy. ”

"you are incredibly lustrous. can someone's aura be glittery? because i'd bet yours is. like those stunning cocktails with the luster dust in them that are named after unicorns and mermaids." jordan mused in agreement, her head tilted to smile at georgia as she spoke. georgia was beautiful and whimsical, in a way that almost felt inhuman and unattainable to jordan. which was ironic, considering how similar they actually seemed to be.

jordan had no idea that georgia was going through a rough patch with some of her other friends, had she known she likely would've gravitated even closer to the other woman in an effort to bring her some companionship and comfort that she was likely now lacking. it was natural, regardless, for jordan to be drawn towards any friendly face she saw. so, perhaps she could be a comfort without even intending to be.

jordan was, on the other hand, aware of the situation with georgia's father. georgia was as strong as she was stunning, as it turned out. jordan couldn't help but wonder if it was something georgia had brought up to william yet, or if georgia just trusted that the two of them would figure things out when it came time for william to leave wrensted. if, of course, tag ever allowed such a thing. regardless, she decided that it was ultimately none of her business to begin with.

"a very tall bird, yes. like, you didn't know birds could even be this tall. like a crane or something." she laughed softly, then nodded in confirmation. "yes, william told me. i'm happy for you. you're both such incredible people, i just know you'll make each other so happy."

The optimism that Jordan maintained throughout this was unbelievable; like, truly the definition of the word unbelievable. Many times they'd caught her downplaying her own issues or pushing them aside to focus on someone else's, and it made them sad to think that she didn't feel like she could allow a sad reality. What was it, Justice wondered, that made her this way? They knew what they'd endured to make them put up their walls, but Jordan's have been so well-crafted - glass, not shiny at all, clean enough to think it's not even there.

And she was doing it now, too, trying to cheer Justice up and bright-side their worries about Sarah with stories about the possibilities of Vienna or moving away with Sarah. "We always do," Justice hummed, looking over to her friend.

A pause in the conversation provided Justice with the opportunity to try to crack open Jordan's candy shell; "how have you been? Since the party, I mean. It still kinda feels like something was... wrong there."

"i'll come over after work and hang out with you while you get ready for your early morning shift at the bakery." jordan mused about a future that didn't even exist yet, trying to breath it gently into existence with her words. maybe it would never come to fruition. but, it could. she was, not subtly, trying to give her friend hope about what was to come. what could happen in the near future. things were rough for them right now, jordan knew. but that didn't mean they couldn't rebuild. brick by brick. and jordan would be there to help every step of the way.

then with a wry smile, her eyes practically sparkling (perhaps because of the warm midday sunshine reflecting within them, or perhaps just optimism phyically manifesting itself). she added. "as billy joel once said, vienna waits for you."

"everyone did seem a little off at the party, didn't they?" jordan commented, deflecting without even realizing she was doing so. "i figured it was just the 'we didn't actually throw this party, and ant didn't provide this food so it's probably all poisoned and randy porter has been happily guzzling beer and eating snacks all evening, is it technically our fault if he croaks when we were the real targets?' of it all but... it definitely felt heavier than that."

if it was anyone else on the couch, liza probably would have startled, but jordan is a pretty consistent fixture in the finch-medina household. she's actually happy that jordan had just walked in this time, after how weird it had felt to answer her knocks on the door. her first assumption, as usual, is that the other woman is there for william, so she's a little surprised to hear otherwise. "who am i to say no to a girl's night?" her eyes scan to the calendar and back, suspicion written all over her features, "surely this isn't just a birthday present in disguise."

"birthday...?" jordan said, feigning ignorance. she then twisted in her seat to follow liza's eyeline to the calendar across the room. "wow, i totally didn't even realize. do you honestly think i would set up an elaborate ruse like this to celebrate your birthday in secret?" jordan smirked, unzipping her backpack to begin setting things up. there were some snacks on the counter, chips and popcorn. chocolate and gummy candies. some of liza's favorites, alongside some of her own. she set out the self care items near the couch.

　　♡　　the familiar voice calling out had been enough to stop georgia in her tracks. fond smile on her face as she looked over her shoulder to catch the end of jordan’s hustle to join her. “ nothin’ new, honeydew. ” well, it wasn’t entirely true since they last time they had really gotten to talk — but there was no way that georgia wouldn’t match.

“ what’s the word, hummingbird ? ” with jordan comfortably by her side, georgia began to walk again. this time, continuing the conversation without the cute, albeit silly, phrases. “ hi ! ”

"i'm glad i ran into you, my day was feeling kind of... lackluster." a day surrounded by friends, or even potential friends to be made, was a much better day to jordan than one spent alone. she was an extrovert through and through. now that she lived alone, she started her days without any opportunity for social interaction, which was clearly wearing on her. she hoped moving into the complex would alleviate that. while she'd still live alone, friends would be just outside her front door.

jordan matched georgia's pace, ready to go wherever she lead. she was always ready for an adventure, even if it was just a trip to the post office or bank. "nothing new, hm? not even a change in relationship status? a little birdie might've told me otherwise." with that comment, jordan gently bumped her shoulder into georgia's, her smile spreading into a full on toothy grin. the little birdie was, of course, her six foot three best friend. "i'm so happy for you guys."

Justice blushed when Jordan complimented them; even though they didn't think Jordan was a liar, they did think she was going to be overly generous because that's what friends do. They rolled their eyes playfully at Jordan mentioning Warm Crust was hiring, saying with a dramatic wistfulness: "staying late to help her close, the sun setting in the background while we put all the dough in the fridge for the morning... I can see it now." It was like a perfect rom com, except they were all squarely in the slasher-stalker genre right now. Maybe not an ideal backdrop for a love story. "She could get me to stay late every day," they sighed, watching Vienna survey some organic honey jars. The other's suggestion that it would only take time was, in true Jordan fashion, blissfully optimistic - so much so it bordered on unreal. Justice shrugged at the idea of Jordan being a potential third wheel, "I mean, like you said, it might not work out with Sarah.... So. At least we'll be neighbors."

"maybe there could even be a playful food fight, like a scene out of a movie or romance novel where you both end up covered in flour. maybe one of you offers the other some clean clothes to wear home... then you fall in love with the way she looks in your t-shirt." clearly, jordan needed to stop reading the aforementioned romance novels. but hey, she had vowed to avoid romance after the period of devastation that followed her relationship with liza, the least she could do was read about it!

vienna honey was, ironically, perusing the honey selection. "her last name is honey, and her family owns a bakery. she has to be the sweetest person alive or the universe makes no sense."

"i'd love to be your neighbor. it might be complicated with my dispatcher hours and your bakery hours... don't they start work super early? anyway, we'll figure out a good time to hang out. even if things do work out with sarah and you end up moving across town or something, we'll still figure it out."

in one of his rare moments outside of his apartment, anthony was helping sabrina through the morning rush while wren was out, dealing with his own shit. ant had just started to bus one of the tables by the front door when he feels the touch on his arm, half expecting a customer inquiring about check-out. he’s pleasantly surprised when he’s met with jordan looking back at him. “yeah, of course. lemme just…” he trails off, finishing up with clearing the table before gesturing for jordan to sit. “what’s up?”

once ant had gestured for her to sit, jordan did so. she leaned across the table subtly, so that they could talk at a lower tone that may not draw as much attention. "it's about wren," a likely anxiety inducing start to the sentence, so she wasted no time in continuing. "i don't know how much it matters now that he's out, but i asked some questions at work. there was no evidence, just some tips called in. from a few different days and different people, if you get what i mean." what she meant, was that while some may have been from tag, not all of them seemed to be. whether the townspeople were really suspicious of wren, or if tag had faked their voices the way they had sarah and liza's, she couldn't be sure.

in an even more hushed tone, she added. "according to wpd, wren having a knife, and a knife being at the valentine's dance, was enough." the knife at the crime scene, pinning the pig's heart to the wall, was not wren's knife. but, that part apparently didn't matter. jordan leaned back in her seat, then smiled a bit sadly. "i just thought he deserved to know," she doubted the wrensted police department could set their pride aside for long enough to admit that they had been wrong. "could you tell him?"

In the past, people tended to tune Justice out. Aside from her dad sometimes, they weren't someone people took time out of their day to listen to. Some, even, went out of their way to avoid hearing them. That's why Jordan's attentive listening style - asking questions, clarification - was comforting. She was listening. What they said mattered to Jordan, and not only to make their life worse. When the other suggested that Sarah maybe wasn't right for her, Justice knew that was probably true; they'd almost been expecting to hear it. Was it supposed to hurt this much? It did in movies and in books, but those were epic romances - not two kids from a small town who couldn't seem to get on the same page. The look to Vienna, however, was not expected. Scrunching their face, they looked over at Jordan as though it were a shock she would suggest such a thing. "Please," Justice said with a short laugh. Vienna Honey was beautiful and sweet - not unlike the girl she was currently focused on, and not unlike her best friend here. Justice was a grumpy old man in the body one expects of a thirteen year old girl after barely hitting puberty. (Well, aside from the abundance of body hair.) This is what friends are for. The thought warmed them despite the chill from outside occasionally creeping in through the doors; yeah, this is what friends are for. Silly Justice, who assumed everything they did was a burden unto others, had forgotten that people who cared about others wanted to hear about their lives. Not that Justice was particularly withholding - people simply never were around long enough to get to a point where they thought it was acceptable to talk about themself freely. Even with William, they'd felt like they had to be a certain way - better. Less messy, less insecure; what would he care about those things? "Yeah," they answered. "He got out the other day. I, um, ran into him..." sought him out while out on a ride "Apologized, obviously. But I don't..." Wrinkling their nose, the blonde aimed to stop themself from even feeling like they were going to cry. "He wasn't going to forgive me regardless, but he needed to know I know I fucked up." She shook her head, trying to get rid of the thought. They'd really only disclosed the apology to Jordan to complete the story, assure her they weren't the fully awful person that they felt like. But maybe that was bragging? Maybe they were a bad person, actually, and this was a desperate attempt to clear their name. Fuck. Change the topic, change the topic - "anyway! You get a ride home from Will the other night?"

jordan's jaw dropped at justice's reaction to her mentioning vienna. "don't act like that! vienna," jordan whispered her name, as to not be overheard. "would be so lucky to have a chance with you! anyone would. you're thoughtful, stunning and great at building blanket forts." she attested, opting not to mention that they were also seemingly pretty good at destroying blanket forts being that sarah had a part in that too, and it seemed like a sensitive topic right now. "you know, i heard the warm crust is hiring. two birds, one stone. which is a horrific saying by the way."

admittedly, jordan didn't know wren personally. if it weren't for the fact that the people she trusted most were sure he was innocent, she might've assumed the cops really did have evidence against him. much like liza had. truth be told, she did actually believe it for the first few moments after his arrest. "sometimes people just need a little bit of time to cool off and reflect though, right? maybe in a week or so he'll think back on things and reach out." she had with amara... though these situations didn't seem all that similar.

"i did, yeah. he's not too keen on the idea of me walking places alone these days." it was fair, considering. he especially would know how dangerous it was. "i've been thinking about applying for a one bedroom in the complex once my lease is up, actually. which would at least make me feel a little less like an inconvenience. doesn't change the potential of me being a constant third wheel, though."

jordan had told william what she learned from her inquiries at work first, he was her best friend and her brain. but, she felt it was important that ant know as well, even if wren was already released. of course, it was even more important that wren himself know, but she didn't know him as well. "do you have a second to talk?" jordan asked ant, approaching him and putting a gentle hand on his arm to get his attention.

if there was a beacon of light, a sign of hope, amid all the darkness and misery tag had created, it was seeing william happy. and by proxy, georgia. it helped tremendously, of course, that she trusted georgia to take care of her best friend's heart.

with these thoughts in mind, jordan jogged to catch up to georgia when she spotted her on her way out of the green basket. "hey!" jordan greeted the other woman enthusiastically. as she did so, she slung her grocery bag over her shoulder. "what's up buttercup?"

jordan was already inside the apartment, sitting on the couch when liza appeared. it was probably an odd way to find a guest in your home under normal circumstances. but it wasn't unusual at all when it came to jordan and this particular apartment. "i don't know about you, but i'm in desperate need of a girl's night... a little relaxation and pampering is in order." jordan had brought a backpack full of supplies. snacks, face masks, nail care items, foot masks, etc. the fact that jordan happened to be in need of a girl's night right around the same time as liza's birthday was purely coincidental, of course.

Taking a deep breath, Justice folded her arms over her chest, "and now I don't even know where things stand with her. Because obviously she's upset with me, I've fucked up once again, but this time... I'm trying to protect everyone I possibly can, you know?" They'd been explaining the situation with Sarah, since Jordan had asked for updates on the derby girl, and they finally gave her the whole story. Walking into the market, they laid down the origin - that fateful 2016 spring break - and then what Peyton had done, and then the podcast (where Justice conveniently does not mention that Amelia wasn't her friend at all, actually, just that Sarah was upset Justice was using any connection to Amelia to bolster the podcast [which they continue to insist was for the greater good!]) and making up at the dance, and then the Wren situation. It was hard to get through, trying to explain it quietly while they examined the apples, and Justice assured Jordan she had thought this through as much as possible. "It's frustrating, too, because like... Sarah and Ant didn't even give a shit about Wren before this. They were treating me like I didn't care about him, as though I hadn't been his friend longer than they've known his full name. I get Wren being mad at me, and I'm going to be doing everything to make it up to him - but them? If none of this Tag shit happened," they said, blonde curls catching the light as they shook their head, "I wouldn't have lost access to Rollaways, and I would have been able to give the alibi with proof, and they'd probably both call me a liar to protect Amelia's memory." Looking over at Jordan, they realized they'd been yammering on for what felt like years. "Sorry, I just... I haven't had anyone to talk to about this."

it was admittedly a lot of information for jordan to take in. perhaps someone else like william would've retained it all without issue, but jordan stopped justice a few times along the way to ask clarifying questions to make sure she was understanding everything. jordan felt this made her bothersome, or annoying but... in the end, she was pretty sure she had gotten the jist of everything.

it was certainly eye opening.

justice told the podcast about her friendship with amelia, a detail that jordan herself was unaware of but assumed she had missed while living out of state with her father. jordan could only interpret that as justice's way of asking the strangers in the comments to stop asking about a very sensitive topic, which was an optimistic thought considering that most people seemed to lack empathy while posting online. but, if anyone could share an optimistic point of view, it was jordan.

"maybe she isn't right for you." jordan suggested with a soft, sad smile. she didn't mean any malice in the statement, and knew it might not be what justice wanted to hear. but, but, from jordan's perspective, it seemed that justice deserved better than someone that was minimizing her friendship with someone else.
