this is one hell of a fuckin meep morp
@bunjywunjy what is this?
sea elephant, a type of free-swimming shell-less sea snail c:
Wild. I was so sure that someone had made a worm-on-a-string out of gelatin, but nope! Real animal. Bonkers. Add it to the list of Weird Things Under The Sea.
@plaguedocboi look at this shit
Yesss the gelatinous weevil!!!! Borzoi larvae!!! Apparently they have pretty advanced eyes and are known to be curious of divers and follow them around
@paradoxagainstsociety aquatic ghost worm-on-a-string :O
Okay, so, I'm pretty sure it's at least a member of the Pterotracheidae family.
I think it's a member of the Pterotrachea hippocampus species, but I'm completely new to this group and, admittedly when it comes to doing a species identification on ANYTHING, I'm probably even less qualified than an amateur lol.
Honestly, there are really only two admittedly EXTREMELY flimsy reasons for why I even think it's that.
The first one is admittedly just because the Wikipedia page on that species links to the video on Twitter (there are also more photos and videos of this specific individual there).
The other is the species distribution maps on a random site (that may or may not be trustworthy and/or reliable, I have no idea). From my understanding, the video takes place in Japan (this is based on the Twitter posts linked by the Wikipedia page as well as a YouTube video linked in reply from the OP of said Twitter posts).
And, I will also add that that the space marked on Japan's coast on the species distribution map for Pterotrachea hippocampus is also marked on the species distribution map for Firoloida desmaresti. To clarify, Firoloida desmaresti is also a member of the Pterotracheidae Family.
The OP in the Tumblr reblog chain (user @mevil ) mentioned Pterotrachea coronata in the tags, but that site's species distribution map for them doesn't seem to have any part of the coast of Japan marked.
Keep in mind that I have no idea of the validity of the information from said site. And even if it's 100% valid and up to date on its information, the species distribution could be different than what was previously thought (heck, it could even be changing).
Here are the links to that site's pages on those three species:
