How to Download Songs from Soundcloud

Soundcloud is a great source for creative indie music and has arguably the best sound quality of all online sources. However, they’re also pretty serious about protecting the files from you, the person who intends on downloading them for free.

I really encourage you to support the artists you like; as a university student however, I also know that sometimes money is tight but you just have to have a song. With the help of Google Chrome, here’s a way to get the MP3 you want:

Click on the ≡ symbol on the right hand side of the address bar and navigate to More Tools -> Developer Tools.

Click on the Network tab. There’s likely to be a lot of stuff popping up so click the ⃠ icon to clear the log. Alternatively, if there’s nothing popping up, make sure that the circle icon on the top left of the window is red.

Go to the page of the song you want to download.

Look for something like “stream?client_id=...” under the Name column. If you can’t find it, refresh the page and try sorting the list alphabetically by clicking on Name.

Click on “stream?client_id=...” and a window will pop up on the right. Make sure you’re on the preview tab.

Look for “http_mp3_128_url=...”, typically the second line (see image). Click on the url part and copy the entire URL. Yes it’s monstrously long, but copying only part of it doesn’t give you access to the file.

Paste this into your address bar. Note that what you just pasted has quotation marks around it - delete these. Use Ctrl + Arrow to get to the start or end of the address (Host + Arrow if you’re a Mac user).

Press enter and voila - the mp3 file should be playing in your browser! Ctrl/Host S to save the file.
