frustrating how female characters in this show get branded with “annoying,” “clingy, “bitch,” “whore,” “mean,” etc, for having flaws or not even doing anything at all other than existing meanwhile there’s a male character that dressed up like a nazi and actually joined the nazis and it’s absolute crickets about that, in fact, parts of fandom thought that scene was rather “hot” and “dom” of him

it’s like, fandom wants the female companions to play the Doctor’s mother. The female companion’s personality and story and flaws are seen as less important than what function she serves the Doctor and fandom expects that function to benefit the Doctor. Fandom doesn’t want a female character to bring out the worst in the Doctor, because that’s seen as the female character failing in her duty to nurture him and guide him in the right, morally correct direction. The female companion’s storyline is seen as significantly less important than her ability to make the Doctor better, whatever exactly better means. If she makes the Doctor better, then fandom awards her the title of good companion, but if she doesn’t nurture the Doctor into his better qualities, then she’s seen as badly written

Once you learn about how men will play at incompetence in order to force labor onto a woman, it becomes crazy how many episodes of Doctor Who have a male Doctor playing at social incompetence while forcing the female companion next to him to do the emotional labor of correcting his social mistakes, meanwhile the fandom just excuses it as being funny or the Doctor being autistic or that it’s hard to keep track of social conventions across literal infinity, but no matter the reason, you end up with a grown man foisting the responsibility of his incompetency onto the woman traveling with him

All of this is to say that I prefer when the writers have the Doctor be somewhat competent at social situations, like, for example off the top of my head, Nine is competent at socializing, it’s just that he simply doesn’t care to, not that he’s playing at incompetency and his female companion has to correct him
