I doodled this a while ago, but I wanna talk at length abt it a little now..

Zhengai's parents are family friends with Banyuan. They knew his wife, and did their best to support him when she died and he went into a depression. Banyuan's hearing loss was also getting worse around this time, so he started learning and teaching his loved ones different ways of communicating.

When Zhengai was born, Banyuan was essentially his babysitter. He had nothing else to do, and it improved his mood greatly, so Zhengai's parents happily let him watch and tutor Zhengai while they worked. In an alternate universe, he would've become Banyuan's music apprentice instead of a monk (hence his ONCE costume😙)

So Zhengai is very literate and fluent in CSL due to his parents forced proximity-ing him into keeping his daye company.
