♥   ──   she  cares  about  her  leader ,  and  she’s  heard  too  much  back - talk  from  gruff  men  with  bleeding  holes  in  their  chests .  queenie  finds  it  in  herself  to  remain  lighthearted ,  busying  around  him  while  firmly  keeping  him  from  rising . 

❛    lemme  just —  ugh ,  sweetie .  you’re  impossible .  i  know  you’ve  been  shot  in  worse  places’n  lived  but —  you’re  hurtin’ —    ❜

he  seems  to  give  up ,  or  at  least  give  in .  thank  goodness ,  about  time .  queenie  turns  to  the  boiling  tweezers  rattling  at  the  bottom  of  the  pot .  disposable  gloves  are  hard  to  come  by ,  she  pulls  the  next - to - last  pair from  the  box .

♥   ──   he’s  impossibly  dense  sometimes  for  a  man  with  a  law  degree .  queenie  doesn’t  bother  to  retort ,  she  takes  the  phone  from  his  hand  and  dials  the  number .  pad  thai  for  two ,  delivery .  she  lets  the  guy  in  and  takes  the  food  with  a  grin  and  a  smile .  it  fades  as  she  shuts  the  door . 

❛    if  you  dunno  by  now  that  i’m  gonna  worry  about’cha  no  matter  what ,    ❜

she  sets  his  takeout  box  in  front  of  him ,  pours  herself  a  glass  of  rosé  and  neglects  to  find  something  to  watch  on  tv .  queenie  looks  at  him  instead ,  tired  and  drawn - out .  he’s  smarter  than  this ,  smarter  than  to  think  she  can  do  anything  but  worry  about  him . 

❛    and  it’s  not  ‘cause  i  think  you’s  a  baby .  it’s  cause  all  the  worryin’  in  the  world  ain’t  gonna  stop  you  dyin’ .  so  lemme  have  this ,  matt .  if  somethin’  real  bad  happens  i  ain’t  gonna  be  there  to  help ,  you  know  that .  but  if  i  try  now  i  don’t ---  i  don’t  feel  so  helpless .    ❜

♥   ──   she’s  shaky ,  weak .  leaning  on  him  feels  incorrect ,  like  the  burden’s  shifted  to  an  undeserving  party .  queenie  lets  out  a  noise ,  a  soft  sound  like  the  physical  manifestation  of  a  breaking  heart .  she  holds  onto  hector  for  dear  life  despite  her  brain  screaming  to  let  him  go . 

he  hugs  her ,  keeps  her  steady  as  he  says .  he  speaks  quietly ,  gently  coaxing  queenie  from  the  remnants  of  something  so  terrible .  hector’s  arms  give  her  biceps  a  reassuring  squeeze ,  prompting  her  to  look  up  at  him .

when  did  she  start  crying ?  blubbering  like  a  child  and  shaking  so  hard . but  she  looks  at  him ,  queenie  doesn’t  stop .  her  breathing  slows ,  so  too  do  the  tears .
