what’s your favorite finishing touch?
The time had come. It was finally our photoshoot day and I was super excited. I was lucky enough to assist a still life stylist on a Tesco home shoot last summer, so knew I’d love being on set again. Seeing of our work come together to shoot the print ad was rewarding. We’d made the mood boards, we’d put together the story boards and bought all the props and ingredients. We were completely ready. Its amazing how quickly time goes when you only have 45 minutes to shoot 3 different styles. I threw myself into this shoot and took role of stylist as thats where I hope to progress and potentially have a career in that sector of the industry. Our concept was to shoot a still life image of the pure ingredients used in our fragrance, and this would consist of 3 different images using cucumber, rose petals and forest fruits. All thats left to do now is edit these images into double page spreads and shoot our short motion picture. I cant wait to see the finished results.
I recently went back home to London and had the best day visiting the Alexander McQueen exhibition with a few bestie from the course. The exhibition was originally held at the met museum in New York however Savage Beauty has graced us with its presence in McQueen’s hometown at the V&A. ‘London is where i was brought up, its where my heart is and where I get my inspiration from.’ His fashion career began on Saville Row, however decided to attend Central Saint Martins to further his knowledge. The exhibition consists of nine rooms, each with a different theme and pieces from each collection. One quote written upon a rustic wall stood out for me. ‘Im a romantic schizophrenic.’ He challenged the conventions of fashion not only through his clothes, but through catwalks shows as well. We were transported to the most beautiful room. ‘The cabinet of curiosities.’ My favourite room by far. The black glossed wood from floor to ceiling epitomised McQueens style and spotlight lighting accentuates all pieces included. I now understand why our lecturer said there is no point doing an fop course if you do not attend. I would urge anyone to visit, it definitely doesn't disappoint!
Don’t measure a woman’s worth by her clothes.
Translated from french: women’s earth. It is a non profit women rights organisation founded in Hamburg 1981. Terres des femmes aims to internationally network with other women rights organisations, they fight against forced marriage, trafficking, forced prostitution, domestic violence and many more horrific acts against women. I stumbled across this advert whilst on Instagram and it hit a note for me. As a young woman being conscious of what your wearing is inevitable, however we don't need to be labelled by a chosen outfit. This image explains how women are characterised by the length of their skirt, plunge of the neckline or height of the heel, and this needs to be stopped. I think the advert is compelling and powerful, as just by a ruler length, we can be called a variety of derogatory names, which may have damaging affects for some women and their self confidence.
VOGUE
Beyond the label
Are we more influenced by the name or shape of the bottle rather than the fragrance? Fragrances are known for their label, shape or celebrity endorsement. Its how brands identify themselves, Marc Jacobs have the kitsch daisy tops, Chanel, the classic square and Dior’s signature bow. Designers are now doing anything in their power to catch the eyes of consumers.
Would you describe yourself as beautiful?
As part of doves new #choosebeautiful campaign, the brand visited 5 cities across the world including San Francisco, London, Shanghai, Sao Paolo and Dehli, and presented women with two doors to walk through. They then had to make the decision to walk through one door labelled Beautiful or the other labelled Average. Most women walked through the average door - choosing to do this because of what is constantly bombarded at them through the media and they feel they should accept this. As the video progresses we see more people have the confidence to walk through the beautiful door and welcomed a triumphant feeling. The company released a statement revealing that 96% of women would describe themselves as average looking and only 4% consider themselves beautiful. Dove is known for its empowering campaigns and this is no exception as we see how thousands of women perceive themselves and this video campaign highlights this. This advert is so creative and powerful. I think the way Dove creates their campaigns is admirable as they really do change the lives of people and their self confidence. They no longer push a product through their advertising as they are a well established brand, however they push emotion and a storyline to associate and link to their brand essence. I love the fact that now, women are being enforced to believe they are beautiful no matter what the media says. Im sure this campaign will pull on a few heartstrings and encourage women to feel good about themselves no matter what, If only it didn't take this long for people to feel this way… Which door would you walk through?
A4 booklet - Fragrance project
Another brief we were given was to create an A4 booklet on how we would like our product to look using InDesign. We would then show this to graphic design students which would include our brief, contents, concept, consumer, competition and bottle and packaging. We explained we wanted an authentic minimalistic British fragrance made with various tea types infused with fruit, to be packaged in a tea caddie wooden box, with 3 compartments containing the fragrance, tea leaves and a small booklet explaining the brand. We were aiming for a luxury product placed in a high end department stores such as Harrods, Harvey Nichols and Space NK. We thought that these retail locations would compliment our luxury product due to its high price point of £70 per 60ml bottle.
After creating these booklets and printing them off, we then presented our book and concept to second year graphic design students who would create visuals of what our product would realistically look like and any promotional images we could use. The meeting went really well and they were surprised at how much we had done and how organised we were, which was rewarding.
We are now awaiting our feedback and mock ups of our fragrance product and will keep up to date via my blog.

- Feminism -
‘This girl can’ campaign was developed by sport england and other organisations. They celebrate active women doing their thing no matter how well they do it or how red their face gets in the process. They aim to empower women and conquer the stereotypes typically associated with us. - Run like a girl - Fight like a girl - Throw like a girl -This campaign promotes self confidence so terms like these aren't classed as an insult anymore. We have recently been shown this campaign at uni, whether it be in lectures, seminars or presentations. This type of advert boosts moral and is an act of feminism being promoted across the country.
‘Like a girl’ should not be used as an insult.
- Black and Blue X White and Gold -
The dress has taken the world by storm as millions debate its colours.
The Salvation Army have used this social media phenomenon to create awareness for domestic violence.
'The only illusion is if you think it was her choice'
- Kanye x Adidas at New York Fashion Week -
Kanye is one of the most controversial personality in current pop culture. It took him 18 months to create this sportswear collection and collaborated further with Italian performance artist Vanessa Beecroft got put together the staging for the event. Throughout the collection, military is a key aspect, the dark colours, khakis and nudes all comply with this concept as they camouflage easily.
As expected Kanye has to make an appearance in Kanye's show, He uses a track off his own album for the show, then storms through the military positioned models in a not so orderly fashion wearing his own collection and is front and centre. Who would've guessed?
Although the collection may have been a huge hit with devoting fans, industry elites slammed it. Creator of fashion week Fern Mallis said 'Im kind of over Kanye' Another industry frontliner Kelly Cutrone stated 'I think he's a joke as a fashion designer.'
I think Kanye is a strange but strategic and clever collaboration for Adidas as they are aware of the buzz that follows him, therefore giving their brand the publicity it needs.
'When West sets himself up to be judged as a designer, he becomes a more familiar, more ordinary creature.'

I was baffled as to how to condense the main trends from each fashion week into one blog post. However, whilst searching the world wide web I stumbled across http://fashionista.com/fashion-week which narrows down and indicates the main trends of each week, in each city.
- How handy... Take a look -
- Topshop Unique -
The Spring / Summer 15 catwalk collection. The latest designs combine British seaside with sports cool using primary colouring. Cara Delevigne, Jourdan Dunn and Hayley Baldwin stand front and centre of the show in their stunning pieces.
However I feel like Topshop should stick to the market that it knows rather than trying to branch out further. Being on the high street, prices ranging from £40 - £600 are ludicrous. I would understand this pricing if they were a luxury brand, however they have opted to operate in the mass market.
I think the collection is clean cut and fresh for spring, wearable for many body types, however aimed at the wrong demographic.
Karl does Kolour
Kendall Jenner is taking the fashion industry by storm and most recently has become the face of Karl Lagerfeld. 'She has a number of high profile cheerleaders such as Anna Wintour, Marc Jacobs and Katie Grand' -Grazia.
Kendall has been linked to bestie Cara Delavigne and Gigi Hadid amongst many others lately but has stated that she doesn't want to be known just because she's friends with A-listers or that she's part of the Kardashian family. She wants to be recognised for her hard work as a high fashion model, which I think is incredibly admirable for a 19 year old.
Woah.
Tom Ford's first fragrance for men has just been released and these definitely shocked.
In the fragrance market as mentioned before, many brands opt for the sensuality and indulgence sector. There are thousands of fragrance ads with nude men and women on the billboards, however I feel here Tom Ford has taken it a bit too far.
Some of the images are a lot more tasteful than others for example the top image here as she is covering herself and not a lot can be seen but on the other hand I think the image below is slightly distasteful as the bottle doesn't completely cover her as it is translucent. This may not particularly be something that everyone would want to see as an ad.
I understand that as a mens fragrance he has chosen to use nude women to grab male attention but maybe tone it down a little...
After completing our categorising tasks today, I decided to create some pin boards on Pinterest to begin the gathering of images for future reference. Its only a start but I'm sure I'll find thousands for inspiration...
