hosannagabriel·:
THE NEXT MORNING, Gabriel slipped out of his room wearing yesterday’s clothes. He’d done his best to keep them neat, but they’d ended up discarded in a heap and it clearly showed. This was his least favourite part — the walk of shame. But he did his best to keep his face neutral as he approached the desk and saw…Rose? Was she still working, or had she had back-to-back shifts? Either way, he felt bad for her. “check out,” Gabriel said simply, gracing the woman with his usual friendly smile. “gosh, do they ever let you out of here, miss? I’m starting to think you’re a ghost tied to the building or something,”
rose was unsure of how she woke up back at the motel but then, she remembered that she had been working on her book. rose should have went home but ended up falling asleep right at the desk. she immediately regretted it, her back slightly in pain from the awkward sleeping position. “i ended up falling asleep,” rose admitted with a chuckle, “but i think you might be onto something. i might be a ghost. i can’t leave this place no matter how hard i try.” she then tried to straighten up and not look like such a mess despite a majority of her life being one. she then looked up again at the pastor, noticing that he looked slightly different than how he did last night. rose couldn’t quite put her finger on it but something was different. “you said check out, right? just hand over your room key and you’re all set to go,” rose replied with a small smile. “how was your night, by the way? everything go well?”

Drew hadn’t planned on staying here in town for very long. But it was getting late and he knew that it wouldn’t be long before he’d need a place to stay. So that was what he had intended to do, feeling lucky when he found the Copper Cactus Motel. Upon seeing the receptionist on the front desk, he made his way over to her. “Yes, please. Just for one night. I’m just passing through,” he replied as he began to pull out his wallet. “How much is it for a room exactly?”
“hundred bucks for the night,” rose replied, realizing she had never seen him before. he was most likely new. “i hate to be the bearer of bad news but no one ever just passes by boot hill. once you come in, you stay for good. kind of the curse of this place,” rose warned. she then chuckled before adding, “hope i’m not scaring you or anything. just wanted to let you know in advance so you don’t fool yourself into trying to leave and failing. i need your driver’s license, by the way.”
kittybriar·:
Annoyance was evident in the woman’s voice, but Kitty didn’t care. She had mastered the sacred art of false smiles and artificially sweet kindness before she even learned how to do long division. Of all the skills that Kitty had acquired, mercilessly antagonizing the innocent was her very favorite. Everything was a game to her; this town, this motel, this woman’s dwindling patience. She loved to challenge a dormant temper in hopes that she could dance in flames that were set by the frustrated and annoyed. Their faces would turn a deep shade of red as they scolded her for being so fucking annoying, and she would only laugh. It was safe to say that the poor souls who made the grave mistake of allowing Kitty Briar to tuck herself comfortably underneath their skin were never quite able to get her out of it. “Oh, it’s probably not up to my liking. Hell, you aren’t even up to my liking.” There was nothing but arrogance in her tone as she completely bypassed the answer about the check out time. Kitty stood before the woman as a prime example of what happened when a parent never told their child no. As a shiny product that had been polished and repackaged by the gentle hands of the pristine Villas Adobes community, Kitty oozed privilege every where she went. Her perfectly curled brown locks, and diamond earrings paired with the outrageously expensive hand bag that hung from the crook of her elbow all seemed to scream: You’re nothing to me and we both know it. Not even bothering to wipe the the conceited smirk away from her lips, Kitty focused her attention on the woman. “What’s the difference between you and a piss soaked mattress? I honestly can’t tell.”
rose sighed, quickly losing her patience. whatever game this girl wanted to play, rose most certainly didn’t want to be a part of it. she already felt like crap majority of her life. there was only so much a person could take before they snapped. “look,” rose replied, banging her fist onto the counter a little harder than intended, “this isn’t the freaking hilton hotel or whatever you’re used to. it’s a simple motel. if you don’t like it, you can leave and you can even have your money back. find someone else to play games with because i’m not up for it.” she took a deep breath before continuing, “and by the way, the difference between me and a piss soaked mattress is that i have a mouth and one hell of a temper. so i suggest you make up your mind on where you’d like to stay or else.”

the fact the low-lives in boot hill thought they could assault someone, rob them, and get away with it rankled him greatly. countless times he’s had to treat victims of robbery, calm them down and make sure they got seen to by nurses if their injuries were serious. had to soothe them through the events once again in attempts to figure out any detail they could provide, any means to help find the perpetrator. “ a tattoo ? that’s good, i can follow that up with our records no problem. but that’s a lot of cash, and i doubt they’ll want to hold on to it long… ” trails off with a slight frown, already running through what he can remember of known crooks in the town that might match the m/o. he’s shaken from his thoughts at her thanks, offering a brief flash of a bright smile as he stood, “ one ice pack coming right up ma’am. ”
it’s a bit to dig through, leftovers piled up in the mini-freezer they kept at the back corner of the main office, but he finds a suitably sized ice pack no problem. lennox takes a second to grab a dish towel on his way back, wrapping the pack up in it to prevent further damage from the cold. he reaches up slowly to press to the black eye, careful and ready to take his hand away once she was comfortable to do so. “ do you have anyone i can call for you ? or are you staying in boot hill alone ? “
“i’m... alone,” rose answered with a sigh. she suddenly couldn’t help but feel scared at the thought that those criminals could be out there. what if they found out they hadn’t killed her and came back to finish the job? rose wasn’t sure what she would do. “what am i supposed to do now? what if they come back? i can’t go back on my own,” rose panicked. she couldn’t help but grow concerned. she hadn’t felt this scared in a long time. not since she had been with her fiancee, the man a devil in disguise. anyone could have been the one to hurt her, rose unable to see their face, so anyone could have been the one to harm her. the unknown terrified rose more than anything.

Nate brought the car over to the auto shop, beginning to work on it. The problem was clear once he checked the spark plugs of her car. They needed to be replaced which he ended up doing as well as the plug wires. In between fixing them, he occasionally engaged in conversation with Rose. He wasn’t usually such a talkative person but he figured he might as well do something. When asked if he noticed anything strange about Boot Hill, he chuckled. “Maybe,” he answered, “The only strange thing about this place is that I can’t leave. I want to but every time I try, I just can’t. Feels like this place is cursed or something.” Boot Hill seemed nice but something about it felt sinister to Nate. Like there was more to it than what met the eye. It all sounded crazy and it most likely was Nate just losing his mind. “Anyways, your car’s finished. You just needed to replace the spark plugs and the plug wires,” Nate replied once he was finished with the car, making his way back over towards her.
rose nodded as she continued to listen to nate talking. she understood where he was coming from. rose wanted to leave boot hill once she finished her books. but when the time came to figure out how, she’d often forget or just give up midway. it was strange and mysterious but it was what often happened. “yeah,” rose replied, “i get it.” she then smiled once nate made his way over to her, telling her that her car was done. “thanks a lot for helping me. i really do appreciate it. and thanks for talking to me. it’ll be helpful for my book i’m working on. anyways, how much do i owe you again?” rose asked.

maybe it’s a bit too suspect, but kim knows she could play it off that she’s waiting for some member of a punk band she’s a fan of and–everyone knows how shoddy the reception and wifi are in boot hill–she’s not sure who it is who’s coming. maybe she should offer that information, but she decides to play it like she has no idea that her request is weird. maybe it’s more innocent that way. “okay, well, i guess i’ll try my fuckin’ luck next week.” she makes to leave before stopping at the door with the woman’s question. turning, she forced a grin and the tension was clear in her face. “uh, i don’t really like to give out my number and i’m not sure specifically who’ll be showing up.” time to lean into that cover story. “bad reception and all. it’s a bandmate from a friend of a friend who’s coming. i’m not sure who though.”
rose nods, understanding the woman’s point. it wasn’t the safest thing in the world to be leaving your name and number out there for anyone to find. boot hill’s boring enough, not too much ever really happening. but you still couldn’t be completely careless either. “of course that’s understandable,” rose agreed. she could tell that the woman wanted to leave now that she had gotten her answer. rose knew that something was up. but what could she do? lock the woman in here and force her to speak the truth? rose wasn't even sure that the woman was lying. just that she was acting weird. “you could go if you want. i’ll make sure to lookout for that friend of yours. anyone who looks like they can be in a band,” rose assured.

“Please.” Noah’s business wasn’t the best kept secret the town had to offer, which didn’t exactly hurt it. Word of mouth was all he had, especially those who appeared just to be here for a night or two. They never were. But they’d say they would be. Not that Noah went around shouting his business for a roof top, but it was a small town. People talk. He wondered if Rose knew the nature of his visits. Or if her mind lingered to other exploits. “It’s not just this beautiful decor that keeps bringing me back.”
“yeah,” rose agreed, her tone slightly sarcastic, “i bet.” rose met all types of characters at work. she worked at a motel, the central hub for all sorts of different people coming and going. all she could hope for was that whatever he was doing here didn’t effect her. she had bigger things to worry about and whatever he was doing here was all his business. “just give me a minute and i’ll reach them soon.”
eloisejjames·:
Dazed, Eloise remained. She heard the other’s words though did not quite register them until a moment later, the entire moment nothing but a blur. She snapped out of it, suddenly allowing the cold evening air to pull at her as she fell back into reality. “Oh… Yeah.” The question was simple, though completely valid. Was she alright? There was nothing ‘alright’ about her present situation, not in the slightest, and yet Eloise had never felt happier or safer in a single moment. “I’m good.” She reinforced– not okay, not fine, good. And it felt good to feel good. “It is late– what brings you out this late?”
“work, unfortunately,” rose admitted with a small smile, “i know. not the funnest excuse. but you wouldn’t believe how demanding some people can get when demanding a room.” she couldn’t help but still be curious over the woman anyways, wanting to help out in any way she could. it’d give her the chance to try and make a friend. “well, uh... do you need any help or anything? i know i’m probably being annoying but i feel bad leaving you alone out here,” rose spoke a moment later.

Nate instantly remembered the woman from when he checked into the Copper Cactus Motel a little while back. She had been sweet but completely gullible. Two things Nate looked usually looked for. And she was pretty so that was an added bonus. “Of course I’ll help you. Anything for the woman who helped me out when I first got here,” Nate assured with a charming grin. He walked over to her, saying, “You can stay here while I get the tow truck and bring it back here. I should be able to have it fixed in a jiffy.”
rose nodded, needing the break from walking all the way here anyways. “of course, i’ll just sit here and wait,” rose assured with a small smile. “and take your time with the car honestly. i’m not immediately in a rush,” she added with a small smile. the man was new and rose figured she could use this opportunity to ask him about what he thought about boot hill. the more responses she got would be better for her book anyways. she just hoped she wouldn’t get sidetracked by the man’s flirty nature in the process.
give us your best boot hill conspiracy !!
rose has a ton already in mind, unsure of which one she should say. she supposes she could list the most obvious one. that once you enter boot hill, you can never leave. but everyone’s probably said that one a million times. “uh, probably my favorite one. that everyone in boot hill’s under mind control. that’s why none of us can leave. because somehow we’re being hypnotized by some unknown force and it’s keeping us trapped here,” rose answered. that’d be a great theory to add to her book.
favourite work of art?
“anything by vincent van gogh,” rose answered. she related to the troubled artist in a sense. “but specifically, starry night over the rhone. that one is probably my favorite,” she continued with a small smile.

It had been a long day at Chuy’s, Nate trying his hand at fixing a car that seemed to be impossible. It didn’t help that it was so hot outside. He was surprised the tires hadn’t melted yet. Nonetheless, Nate was too stubborn to give up - a trait he had gotten from his asshole of a father. He wanted to say he got it from his mother but he hadn’t known her to figure that one out. Nate persevered despite the challenges that the weather as well as the stubborn car before him brought. He stopped once he heard someone walking in his direction, turning around to see who it was. A flirtatious grin broke out on his face once he saw who it was standing before him. “Well, hello there. What can I do for you today?”
rose recognized the man from when he had stayed at the motel. she’d be lying if she said she hadn’t developed a little bit of a crush on the handsome stranger. a smile broke out on her face, one she tried to hide but failed. “my car broke down across the street. won’t start no matter how many times i’ve tried. i know you’re busy as ever with that,” rose replied, motioning over to the car he was currently working on, “but i was wondering if you could help me. i need it to go to work and everything.” rose supposed she could walk in the mean time. but the impossibly hot weather made that unbearable.

Weak hands gripped the steering wheel, a constant disruptive tremor threatening her posture as her nerves took over inch by inch, second by second. When people said Boot Hill was in the middle of nowhere, they weren’t wrong. With the next town over a few hours drive, Eloise felt the exhaustion get the better of her. A quick glance at her watch confirmed her lack of punctuality, but still the brunette held onto the steering wheel, beyond terrified to get out of the car. The truth was hospitals had always held negative denotations for Eloise; her mother’s death, the endless broken arms and stitches she had endured as a child. But this visit, a visit so secret and frightening the waitress had booked an appointment in the next town over—- this visit was by far the most heart racing, anxiety inducing appointment of her life.
It was dark by the time Eloise returned to Boot Hill, the day fading behind her with all hopes that this journey would be easy. Streetlamps illuminated the street as best they could, though the complex was still truly in clandestine. The night atmosphere hit Eloise like the cold hands of death, though she did not flinch. The last few hours had forced the brunette to take a dramatic change. It was something she was completely aware of, the tiny plus sign that stared back up at her all those weeks ago had warned her of its impending arrival—- but seeing the sonogram had rendered her speechless, for never had she thought herself capable of so much love.
Footsteps in the night forced her from her daze, and almost instantaneously Eloise wrapped her jacket around her frame, crossing her arms over her stomach. “You– frightened me.” She murmured to the approaching figure, still somewhat hypnotised by the recent events.
rose had been making her way back home, it being a long day at the motel as well as rose trying to plan out the rest of her book. it wasn’t as easy as rose would have liked and rose often found herself stuck. writer’s block appeared to be kicking her ass and rose was far from happy about it. nonetheless, she wasn’t going to be giving up. rose was determined to expose boot hill and its less than normal secrets. even if it killed her. boot hill at night could be scary if you let it get to you. rose could admit she found herself spooked out by the shadows at times. but that was about it. but the woman slowed her pace once she realized that there was a figure standing in front of her. curiosity got the best of rose as she walked over to them. it was a woman who clearly looked like she was still in a daze. over what, rose wasn’t sure. “you alright?” rose asked as she continued to walk over to the woman, “it’s a little too late to be walking around still.”

len notes the nervous body language, how her shoulders curl just ever so slightly in on themselves like rose was trying to protect herself from another blow, another scare. his mouth turned to a thin line, jaw flexing as it tenses just so with carefully restrained anger as her injuries are revealed. it looks nasty, as black eyes always do the next day, and he wishes there were something to be done for it. well, he can always grab a freezer pack from the back, if the swelling was still bad. lennox has an incident form out on the desk by the time she finishes, rough details lined out in his careful script. it drives him to frustration that people think they can get away with such offences in their town, as if the law won’t hunt them down. disgusting.
“ i’m gonna work as hard as i can to get this guy, ma’am, why don’t you take a seat ? ” he gestures to one of the worn but comfortable chairs by the desk, coming around it to perch on the edge of it in front of her as he does so, “ now, did you see the person who did this, any kind of prominent feature that could help identify them ? how much did they walk off with, and, if you don’t mind me asking, would you like something for that shiner i’ve got an ice pack if it’s sore. ”
rose tried her hardest to remember all the details, that night too terrifying for her to forget. upon his request, rose did take a seat and tried her hardest to hold it all together. all her life, people put their hands on her. she thought it would be over with by now. but this only put her back in her natural state of fear and terror. “i don’t remember what they looked like since they were wearing all black and had on a ski-mask. but his shirt sleeve raised up slightly as i tried to fight him off. he had a tattoo. a dragon or snake, i think. they took the whole cash register which had three hundred, maybe four, in it,” rose answered, wiping away the stray tear that threatened to fall down her cheek. she looked up once she heard the sheriff asking his next question. she hadn’t even thought about her black eye, reaching up to touch it. rose winced in pain when her finger made contact, it still sore. “that ice pack would be amazing right about now. thanks...,” rose trailed off once her eyes made contact with the name tag the sheriff wore, “officer lennox.”

TRUMAN COULDN’T HELP but look at the woman with a cocky smile. “seriously? ‘staying inside all day’? that’s the best you could come up with. What would you say his unfinished buisness was? not getting enough Vitamin D? Nah,” He shook his head, sure of his reasoning. “has to be something gruesome. Like, he was impaled on the radio tower so now his ghost haunts the airways, trying to use the radios to escape.”
“what? vitamin d is important? good for the bones or something, right?” rose asked, instantly regretting all the times she’d skip school. maybe she would have actually learned something other than how to be self-destructive. “anyways, that’s quite the imagination you have there. being impaled by the radio tower sure sounds like a fun way to go. but how about getting electrocuted by touching the wrong cord, his body burnt to a crisp like a human marshmallow? or getting decapitated? nothing’s quite as gruesome as a good ol’ fashioned beheading,” rose continued.

Nate knew that he was probably better off sleeping in his car than anything else. But the life of luxury he had accustomed himself to for most of his life would never allow that. So he knew he’d have to rest in a motel for now while he tried to get to the bottom of what happened to him. And the Cooper Cactus Motel seemed to be the first place to go to. He figured he’d stay for the night. Maybe two. Just until he was able to get his shit together and figure out his next move. The reminder of why he was even here in the first place made him nearly grow upset all over again. But he hid it all perfectly with the charming grin that broke out on his face. He took out all the money he had in his pocket, too lazy to count it all (although he knew it was going to be more than enough), and placed it on the counter along with his driver’s license. “Yeah. Just for a night or two,” he responded.
rose nodded, finding herself staring at the mystery man longer than she knows she should. she hasn’t been in town forever but even she knows she’s never seen him before. the woman then snapped out of her thoughts once she looked down to see the money he had put down. she counted it all, it being much more than just for a night or two. it just made her that much more intrigued. rose was no nancy drew or anything like that but she’d like to think she was good enough at figuring out mysteries. “perfect then, mr. godfrey,” rose replied as she read his license. “room six is all yours.”
