Okay, Tumblr. Since many of you following this blog are also devoted Phantom and Frankenstein fans, we have ALL been sleeping on a 2023 Turkish adaptation of Frankenstein on Netflix called "Yaratilan" ("Creature").
I had no idea this existed until @rosietealeaves told me about it, and now it is one of my favorite treatments of the novel. Set in the turn-of-the-century Ottoman Empire, it follows Ziya (Victor), a young medical student who meets an eccentric professor when he arrives at university in Istanbul, and the two get up to some very resurrection-y misdeeds.
There are some unique elements added to this one and also subtle shifts and tweaks of the novel's plot points that change just enough to add some really compelling new story beats, particularly for the Creature.
Like, for example, pining for the woman you love through a hole in the wall, while ensuring she cannot see your hideous face or the monstrous truth of your birth.
So, you know. The Venn diagram here is very much a circle, iykyk.
Fantastic treatment of the novel, with some originality to make it feel like its own distinct story.
Yaratilan is on Netflix with subtitles in multiple different languages! GO WATCH! PINE! CRY!
YEEEEEEAAASSSSSSS!!! I’M SO GLAD YOU ENJOYED THIS GREAT PIECE OF FRANKEN-MEDIA, HEHEHEHE ⚡️⚡️⚡️
Yaratilan is such a wonderful interpretation of the Frankenstein story, and I’m always so happy to hear about other’s having the chance to experience it. I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Frankenstein (or if you just want some more good television) for the reasons Muirin gave above AND MUCH MORE!
It remains one of my favourite pieces of Frankenstein related art, and it’s always a treasure to be able to share the existence of it with others. (Because it means I’ll have more people to talk about this show with hehehehe >:3)
Finally, after 4-5 attempts, I've finally gotten a creature lipsync passed the rough phase. Does it look botched? Yes, but at this point I'd rather have something finished than good. I'm really glad I completed this, it took longer than expected but that's what I get for animating (personal work) in between animating (job) during a heatwave. Regardless, I'm glad it's here and I've learned a few things from it that I hope to take into future works. I also want to thank @muirin007 for lending me their audio of Ralph Ineson reading from Frankenstein as the creature, really great choice of actor for that part, his voice fits like a glove <3
