Hopefully this paper and the discussion that follows will force managers to take a second look at how valuable these long lived fish truly are. Of interesting note here was how the sampled Pelican River fish, which are subjected to impoundments/dams in the lakes they were sampled, are the longest lived and their population assemblage of 85-90% of individuals over 80 years old suggests long-term recruitment failure because since dam construction in the 1930's. Another reason why dam removal and stream connectivity is vital to healthy fisheries management! Yin and Yang. Was out earlier this week conducting spring survey and tagging efforts for lake sturgeon on the Otter Tail River system. Played net boy on the shocker boat so I wasn’t able to work up fish and get many photo opportunities. Managed to score a quick break to photograph these fish after netting a dozen sturgeon out of a pool and sending them over to the other boat crew to work up. I was somehow able to dip net both of these fish at the same time in the heavy current which is not typical nor an easy task.
