Seattle to San Francisco Cycle Tour gallery

Soon after coming home, I found out that my friend Sarah was going on a big cycle tour from Seattle to San Francisco. I texted her saying I was going to join her, and her mom (who worried about Sarah  travelling alone) was overjoyed and she insisted that I go. After a quick 10 minute reunion on UW campus we embarked, her on her flashy touring set-up and me on my piece of shit borrowed bike with kitty litter saddleboxes.

From Seattle, we followed the “Seattle-to-Portland race” route. I rode my first ever century (100 miles in a day) on the 3rd day, which was a real killer! Then, we headed west to highway 101 and stayed on there until we hit the Golden Gate Bridge!

About 500 miles into the 1000 mile trip, though, my bike died. We found the closest bar and kept the beers coming while we figured out what to do. I told Sarah to go on without me, but she really enjoyed my company and wanted to figure out how to keep on at it together. So we boxed up our bikes and mailed them home, went to Goodwill and bought backpacks to replace our saddlebags, and started hitchhiking the rest of the way to San Francisco.

In an effort to increase communal support and reduce consumerism, I’d like to offer some of my abilities in exchange for some services I would like.

Lessons

Traveling and hitchhiking. How to see the world on a budget.

Science and technology. I have very broad academic interests, but know quite a bit about biology, genetics, neuroscience, mathematics, and chemistry.

Cryptography. How to secure your data, browse anonymously, and have encrypted communication. I also know a ton about surveillance systems in use.

Computing. I am generally pretty savvy with computers and recovering data. I also know how to program and can probably help you automate things.

Editing. Let me know if you need eyes on some writing and I can help you improve it.

Photography. I can take professional pictures for you and edit them, or I can teach you how to use your camera and Adobe software. I can also make you some Deep Dream pictures.

Filesharing. I have lots of movies, music, ebooks, audiobooks, software, etc. I also can teach you how to fileshare.

Cooking. I can make you my Abuela’s Cuban black beans, omelets, chili, quesadillas, tamales, tapas, milanesas…

Emotional support. Let me know if you need someone to nonjudgementally listen to your problems.

My housemates and I went up to the Cascades to check out this lake. On the way back, we realized that a few kids were stuck up there without any light to get down safe, so we climbed most of the way up, found them, and took them to the parking lot safely! They wanted to pay us but we just told them to pay it forward

Terracotta Army

I spent a few weeks in Xi’an, China, the former capital and gateway to the Silk Road. While I was there, I visited the necropolis with the famous terracotta army, the fortified walls, massive drum towers, and pagodas. I think my favorite part, though, was eating great food in the muslim quarter!
