i think the keelhauling scene is really successful tbh as a depiction of the state’s power to torture and kill with impunity. one reason for this is the indirect and impersonal manner of torture. it’s not rogers holding a knife, other men are pulling the ropes setting the stage doing the deed. there is an audience. it’s a spectacle. rogers is the conductor. the main point is public humiliation & domination and the terror its meant to instill in the rest of them in order to get them to capitulate to civilization and it’s made possible because of the empire’s military force. like it’s almost incidental to me that it’s also personal for rogers, his pride arrogance & cruelty are extensions of the empire’s pride arrogance & cruelty
