Xion giggled and ran through the streets of MoogleTown. It’s been a long time since her confinement and now that she’s free, she can’t wait to try all sorts of new things. The trip to the “hospital" took longer than necessary and although the tall person with a lab coat told her not to strain herself, she couldn’t contain her excitement.

"Hello, MoogleTown! Xion is back!"

The moment that excited giggle and ever-familiar voice caught Roxas ears', he told the man selling Sea Salt ice cream that he wanted two instead of one. After paying for the extra one, Roxas happily walked over to Xion, giving her one. "Good timing, Xion!" Roxas exclaimed, "Just in time for your 'Welcome Back' ice cream!"

The world wasn’t ending for once, and while Riku appreciated that as much as the next person, he couldn’t help growing bored after a while. Nothing worth mentioning had happened in weeks, and the young keyblade wielder was becoming agitated with his lack of purpose. He had defeated villains and saved worlds - after doing almost the exact opposite - and nothing to do just didn’t fit Riku’s life anymore.

"Come on, a little chaos never hurt anyone…"

Something - anything - needed to happen and save him from this boredom.

Roxas had been gradually seeing more faces he recognized over Moogletown. Apart from Xion and Axel, most of them weren't the closest people to him, but he recognized people from Twilight Town. He even thought he'd seen Sora once, but he never got a clear view of him. But if Sora was here, then that must have meant Roxas really was able to live independent of him now. He still wasn't sure what the nature of his existence was in Moogletown...or what this all meant. Naturally, when Roxas came across Riku, though, he wasn't totally pleased to see him, seeing as how almost every time he encountered Riku, it ended up in a fight. "...you!" Roxas shouted in surprise the moment Riku came into his field of view, where a small crowd of people had been passing in front of him before. Roxas right arm reached out to his side, as if ready to summon his Keyblade at any moment. "What are you doing here?!"

Axel raised an eyebrow, and then laughed, running his hand through his hair. “I’m guessing you misunderstood what I meant by that… I only meant, that you weren’t the only person I promised to drag back, right?" He sighed and closed his eyes,and leaned against a nearby wall. “As for why i’m here… I was being sent on a mission to another world, when I ended up here." He then opened his eyes and looked around at the buildings around him. “However, now that i’m here… I don’t think i’ll be returning to the Castle anytime soon.

"Sent on a mission?" Roxas looked at him confused. “But Xemnas….he…" He wondered what this meant. Did Axel not have all his memories? Or…did he come from a different time? “How can you be-…? Er, you know what, never mind. I’m sure we’ll figure it out later! Besides, as long as you’re sticking around here, everything’s gonna be great! This means the three of us can share ice cream again…just like old times."

Axel raised an eyebrow at his young friend, and frowned. ‘I wonder what’s gotten into him? He certainly seems have alot on his mind…’ “Just like old times, huh? That sounds good to me." He chuckled and ruffled Roxas’ hair, smiling. “So, what all is there to do in his town? Seems a bit underwhelming to me…"

Roxas straightened out his hair a little, letting out an annoyed grunt after Axel ruffled it. "Underwhelming?" Roxas said, raising an eyebrow. "Guess you haven't seen the place during its busy hours...but I guess it's about 2 or 3 in the afternoon right now. There's mostly lots of shops and places to, well, just hang out....and yeah..." Roxas grinned as he said the next part, "...there's sea salt ice cream too."

“HEY THAT’S NOT FAIR!” Xion shouted whilst laughing. She ran as fast as she could towards Roxas but obviously, since Roxas got a headstart, he got there first. The difference was only a bit and she realized that the old woman tending the store had a smile on her face, watching their antics. “Seriously Roxas! You cheat! Buy me ice cream! Two sticks, please ma’am! And the blonde guy over there is paying!”

She laughed louder than she had ever laughed ever since she entered MoogleTown. It has been a while since they had this much fun, especially during the Organization day where one day to the next is all about missions and fulfilling Kingdom Hearts. She was a little glad that those cruel days were past.

Roxas huffed at at Xion in an obviously joking way, and turned away from her. “Hmph! Not my fault you can’t keep up!” He turned back to face Xion and cracked a smile, and then nodded. “I was gonna pay anyways, you know.” He laughed as Xion did. It was nice, just…being there. Not having to worry about the Organization or missions or anything like before. They were there, just free to have fun together, not having to worry what Xemnas or anyone else would think about them being friends…It was all in the past. There was nothing weighing them down…it was just…having fun, enjoying each others’ company. The only thing that would make it better is if Axel were there somehow.

The vendor gave them their ice cream, laughing slightly and said how good it was to be so young. Xion thanked the old lady but stuck her tongue out at Roxas while he paid. “Thanks for the ice-cream anyway, although it would be nice if you didn’t have to start it off with a race,” she giggled. Yeah, those days are over. Only fun times now.

As she stuck the cold stick to her mouth, she saw a sign board. “Oh, now I know why it’s so crowded today! Summer’s solstice is coming I believe, who knows, which is why the days are getting hotter. Moreover, there’s gonna be a gigantic festival! Well, eat your ice cream and be careful not to let it drip, silly!”

Roxas eagerly started on his ice cream, working on it little bits at a time. His glance shifted to Xion as she remembered why it was so unusually crowded. That made a lot of sense. A festival for the coming of Summer Solstice. It sounded like fun. “A festival, huh?" Roxas said, pausing for a bit. "…Betcha that’ll be fun, don’t you think?" Roxas grinned.

Xion poked Roxas on the cheek lightly. “It will be! But you gotta stick around for that to happen. We’re not even sure when the festivals gonna be held. With this crowd, I’m guessing that it’s within this week. For some reason festivals spring up overnight in this town… One minute it’s completely crowded and the next you’ll hear announcements claiming that there will be a festival in a certain number of days."

She licked her ice cream thoughtfully. “Do you wanna come hang out with me for the festival? It could be fun!" She grinned and took a bite from her ice cream. Ah, the taste of sweet and salty… strange but very… no, just strange. But she likes it. Reminds her of home.

"Yeah, well, I wouldn't really know where else to go, anyways. I'm still new here, remember? Besides, I don't think I know anyone else here. I'd rather hang out with you anyways." Roxas grinned before licking his ice cream again. He always thought it was a weird mix...sea salt with ice cream. But it worked for some reason that he couldn't place. "Yeah, Xion. Sounds like fun."

A portal leading to the Corridor of Darkness opened in the middle of Moogletown, and Axel stepped out, looking bewildered. “This… definitely isn’t where I was trying to go.” He rubbed the back of his head, and sighed quietly. “Well, now that i’m here, I might as well have a look around.” The portal behind him closed, and he began to walk around slowly, taking in the area, and landmarks around him.

Roxas was slowly walking around town, an ice cream bar in his hand. He had finally been getting used to being in Moogletown, and it especially helped that someone he knew was around. He was happy that Xion was around, and he had his memories of her back again, though it still felt just a little incomplete without Axel there. But regardless, he hadn’t felt so happy in such a long time. He wasn’t sure if he could be much happier. So, taking all of that into consideration, it was sort of difficult for Roxas to contain his happiness when he saw Axel in Moogletown suddenly. He didn’t know why he was there but he didn’t care. Roxas ran straight toward him, nearly colliding with Axel, but stopping just short. He had to make sure this was real, and not some sort of…illusion or something. “Axel?! Is that really you?!”

Axel suddenly came to a halt as he saw Roxas charging toward him. “What the…” He then chuckled at Roxas’ shock, and nodded. “The one and only! What, did you think you wouldn’t ever see me again?” He punched Roxas playfully on the arm, and smiled. “So, how have you been holding up without me round to guide you?”

“…Not so well, you know. I mean, after we fought each other and then all that stuff happened…I…” Roxas sighed, and then suddenly, almost out of nowhere hugged Axel. He just hugged him, not even caring. “I missed you, you goof. I thought you were supposed to drag me back, no matter how hard I tried to get away.” He smiled at Axel, so happy to see him. “Oh man! Wait this means…all three of us are here! Axel! Xion’s here too!” Roxas was more excited than ever.

Axel was surprised by the sudden hug, but he merely chuckled and shook his head. ”Well, you know what they say, the harder you search for people, the harder they are to find.” He smiled and laughed. “Xion’s here, huh? Well, that makes searching for her a lot easier then.”

Roxas broke away from the hug, still smiling, but then a curious look appeared on his face. “…searching for her?” Roxas let the rhetorical question hang for a moment. Come to think of it, he didn’t know the circumstances under which Axel came here in the first place anyways. “Say, Axel…” Roxas started slowly, almost as if he was afraid of the answer, “…why are you here anyways?”

The crowd pressed from all sides and it became a little hard to move around. Being short has its downsides and this was one of them, it was complicated moving through the crowd, especially while holding on to someone’s hand. It was horrible; they nearly got separated twice but through sheer luck and determination, they managed not to let go. “Roxas, are you holding up okay? We’re nearly at the end of the crowd!” Xion screamed as loud as she could, in fear that the loudness of the crowd would drown her noise.

“I’m still here…yeah, I’m okay!” Roxas shouted back at Xion. Roxas couldn’t imagine Xion living in such a busy place. He couldn’t even imagine himself living in such a busy place. It didn’t always seem to be this busy. It was weird, like this town didn’t have consistency. Maybe that’s why it felt so weird to him at times. Roxas still held on as tightly as he could. He got jostled a couple of times, and his hand slipped a little, but he never lost grip. He was going to hang on, because Xion was his friend. Friends…just having a friend in the first place had turned his entire life around. To think if he hadn’t become friends with Axel and Xion, he wouldn’t be the Roxas he was today…He didn’t want to be any different. He didn’t want Xion to be any different either. So he smiled a little as they both moved through the crowd, determined to get out together and enjoy some ice cream.

After a long time of struggling, the crowd finally parted and the two were thrusted to the ground. Xion looked at Roxas and laughed a little, the other soon followed. As they brushed themselves off, Xion scanned the area, making sure it was the right place. It’s like recon all over again but this time, they were about to have a lot of fun! It’s been a while since this town got super busy… I wonder what’s up?

“Ummm, if you’re wondering, the town isn’t usually this crowded. I’ve honestly never seen this many people; even in carnival days.” She thought for a moment and spotted the ice cream stand. “Look, it’s over there, Roxas! Come on!”

Xion punched his arm once more. “Say no more, Roxas! I’ll lead the way.” She took his hand in hers and tugged a little for him to follow. After a few steps, she stopped and went to his ear, “I’m glad you’re not Xaldin,” she whispered with a shudder. “Ugh, I can’t imagine what I’d do if I saw him… I’d probably run away. Xigbar would be better!” That’s right, Xion thought. It’s been a while since I laughed this hard.

“Oh, that way is to the town square! Be careful and don’t let go of my hand. It gets crowded during the day!” Her grip on her got stronger, in fear of losing her precious friend in the crowd once more. The ice cream shop was on the opposite of the town square but it would be horrible if they got separated along the way. Mobs of people filed in and out as they stepped on the path. Here goes nothing…

Roxas simply grinned as she took his hand and led the way. He felt happier and more carefree than he had in the longest time. He’d almost forgotten what it felt like…just spending time with one of the two people he cared about the most in the world. But here they were…and Roxas couldn’t help but snicker when she said how glad she was that he wasn’t Xaldin, and that even Xigbar would be better. “No kidding!” Roxas exclaimed with a grin. He nodded and held on to Xion’s hand tightly. “Don’t worry, Xion, I won’t let go.” Roxas meant it as much as he possibly could. He and Xion had found each other again, and after all that happened, he didn’t want the two of them to get lost from each other again. Roxas was sure Xion didn’t want that either, so he followed her as best he could, hanging on to her hand and not letting his slip for even a second. After all, there was ice cream and a good time to be had.

So, taking all of that into consideration, it was sort of difficult for Roxas to contain his happiness when he saw Axel in Moogletown suddenly. He didn’t know why he was there but he didn’t care. Roxas ran straight toward him, nearly colliding with Axel, but stopping just short. He had to make sure this was real, and not some sort of…illusion or something. “Axel?! Is that really you?!”

Axel suddenly came to a halt as he saw Roxas charging toward him. “What the…” He then chuckled at Roxas’ shock, and nodded. “The one and only! What, did you think you wouldn’t ever see me again?” He punched Roxas playfully on the arm, and smiled. “So, how have you been holding up without me round to guide you?”

"...Not so well, you know. I mean, after we fought each other and then all that stuff happened...I..." Roxas sighed, and then suddenly, almost out of nowhere hugged Axel. He just hugged him, not even caring. "I missed you, you goof. I thought you were supposed to drag me back, no matter how hard I tried to get away." He smiled at Axel, so happy to see him. "Oh man! Wait this means...all three of us are here! Axel! Xion's here too!" Roxas was more excited than ever.

Xion giggled a little. “Well, it doesn’t matter now, as long as you’re here, right? There’s not a lot of people from our world in this place though! I’m pretty sure I was the only one until you showed up!”

She released Roxas from her hold and smiled goofily once more. “It’s nice to have you back, Roxas. Should we get some ice cream?”

It was unfortunate, the tragedy that happened between them that is, but it was unavoidable. Xion was glad that Roxas still recognized her. It’s a strange world but as long as her friends are here, shouldn’t be a problem. Xion realized that Roxas was in sort of a daze and she punched him lightly. “Stop being a zombie! You’re over that already. Now, I’ll say it again, should we get ice cream, or what?”

Roxas grinned, “Yeah, well, it’s just no fun to have one of us without the other right?” He laughed a little. “Besides, better me than someone like like Xaldin…man, he was creepy.” Roxas shuddered, then laughed a little again. He hadn’t joked around and laughed in a while either. It was just like it used to be. He’d never realized just how much he’d missed it until now…but he figured that was probably because his memories of Xion had been gone for a while. “Ice cream…it’s been way too long since I’ve had any. That sounds perfect!” Roxas gave Xion his best smile. “Well, hey, I suddenly found you after I thought you disappeared forever…you can’t blame me for being a little stunned can you? But you know what…I think this is the best surprise I could ever have.” He nodded. “Yeah…let’s go get ice cream. Lead the way! …I don’t exactly know my way around here very well yet still.” Roxas admitted, a little embarrassed.

Xion punched his arm once more. “Say no more, Roxas! I’ll lead the way.” She took his hand in hers and tugged a little for him to follow. After a few steps, she stopped and went to his ear, “I’m glad you’re not Xaldin,” she whispered with a shudder. “Ugh, I can’t imagine what I’d do if I saw him… I’d probably run away. Xigbar would be better!” That’s right, Xion thought. It’s been a while since I laughed this hard.

“Oh, that way is to the town square! Be careful and don’t let go of my hand. It gets crowded during the day!” Her grip on her got stronger, in fear of losing her precious friend in the crowd once more. The ice cream shop was on the opposite of the town square but it would be horrible if they got separated along the way. Mobs of people filed in and out as they stepped on the path. Here goes nothing…

Roxas simply grinned as she took his hand and led the way. He felt happier and more carefree than he had in the longest time. He'd almost forgotten what it felt like...just spending time with one of the two people he cared about the most in the world. But here they were...and Roxas couldn't help but snicker when she said how glad she was that he wasn't Xaldin, and that even Xigbar would be better. "No kidding!" Roxas exclaimed with a grin. He nodded and held on to Xion's hand tightly. "Don't worry, Xion, I won't let go." Roxas meant it as much as he possibly could. He and Xion had found each other again, and after all that happened, he didn't want the two of them to get lost from each other again. Roxas was sure Xion didn't want that either, so he followed her as best he could, hanging on to her hand and not letting his slip for even a second. After all, there was ice cream and a good time to be had.

A portal leading to the Corridor of Darkness opened in the middle of Moogletown, and Axel stepped out, looking bewildered. “This… definitely isn’t where I was trying to go.” He rubbed the back of his head, and sighed quietly. “Well, now that i’m here, I might as well have a look around.” The portal behind him closed, and he began to walk around slowly, taking in the area, and landmarks around him.

Roxas was slowly walking around town, an ice cream bar in his hand. He had finally been getting used to being in Moogletown, and it especially helped that someone he knew was around. He was happy that Xion was around, and he had his memories of her back again, though it still felt just a little incomplete without Axel there. Xion could not grasp the fact that her friend’s standing in front of her. Something inside her swelled up and brought fresh tears on her face. She could only dream of the day when she could meet Roxas once more and here it was. The dream came true. Her blonde friend, XIII of the Organization, in front of her.

“H-Hey,” her voice shook. Instinct took over and she closed the gap between them with a hug. “Hey…” she whispered, more at ease after knowing that this Roxas isn’t just some ghost from her imagination; that it was definitely the boy she worked with, had fun with and fought with. She could do nothing with the tears and her shoulders shook slightly.

After a while, she managed to compose herself and smile goofily at her companion. “It’s been a while, hasn’t it? How’d you end up here?”

Roxas’s smile stayed on his face as he hugged Xion in return. Yeah…it was really Xion. This wasn’t some nice dream or illusion, was it? This wasn’t like the digital Twilight Town he’d been in, either. This was really her. He tried not to let Xion see but he inadvertently let a few more tears escape. But he realized it didn’t really matter if Xion saw or not. So he stopped trying to make such an effort to hide them. Roxas still had that same smile that he had when he tried to answer Xion’s question. “I’m…not exactly sure. So much has happened, but…I’m not sure how I wound up here. I just…woke up here…on this beach two days ago. But right now I’m pretty glad I did end up here somehow.” Roxas’ smile turned into a bit of a silly grin. He couldn’t seem to stop smiling. In the last moments with Xion, when he recognized her right before she faded he thought he’d never see her again. But here she was…right in front of him. He couldn’t stop thinking about all the good moments, all the happy times, just…being friends…the three of them, on the clock tower, every day. Friends. Maybe they were Nobodies. Maybe they weren’t supposed to have hearts. But it didn’t make much sense…because they were friends, and how could they be friends if they didn’t have hearts?

  It was dull. 3 words to sum all the things that has happened in the past year. Some moments were lovely and made her so happy but it never lasted. She contemplated the highlights in her year and laughed at every memory turn. Xion found herself at the beach and the ocean wind made her shiver in a good way. The smell of the sea made her feel… somewhat at home. Sort of like seashells.

A figure stood in front of her, watching the sunset. No, it couldn’t be… could it? A thousand splintering memories rushed through her. Watching the sunset, the clocktower, sea-salt ice cream, missions, the battle, Roxas. RoxasRoxasRoxas. Roxas.

Xion rushed to where he stood, her cloak flapping in the wind and the sound of her feet on sand. A crunching sound. That doesn’t matter. Roxas. He’s—Roxas?

“Roxas… is that you?”

Roxas still didn’t understand how he was here and individual of Sora. It was all he could seem to think about. During all this time though, it seemed like there was something tugging at his memory. He was never able to put his finger on it though. He remembered everything now, though didn’t he? His time with the Organization, everything up to accepting that he was a part of Sora…as much as Sora was a part of him, in a way. Roxas heard more sets of footsteps crossing the sand behind him as he kept thinking about all the things that had happened. One of the sets of footsteps seemed to be more urgent, rushing toward something. Roxas didn’t pay any mind to them…until the loud crunching sound they made seemed to be sounding closer. Roxas turned around and saw…a hooded figure. He couldn’t see the face of the person under the hood though. He stared curiously, and then a single word was said. A single word with a single voice. “Roxas…” Roxas didn’t even hear the last part of the sentence. That had been it. What had been awakening within his memories this entire time. It all came back in one instant. It was almost too much for Roxas to process. Number XIV, becoming her first friend, their time in the Organization. Times on the clock tower, sunsets, the three of them together, sea salt ice cream, the battle, the end, the tears-…Roxas nearly fainted, standing uneasily as he tried to regain his composure, all the memories flashing through his vision at once. Once they finally stopped, a couple of tears escaped from Roxas. He quickly wiped them away though. He saw her. He saw her face. It was her. It really was. He’d fought so hard to see her again. He never thought he would. But somehow he’d wound up here…and so had she. Roxas smiled. For the first time since he’d been here, he finally smiled. Roxas said the only thing he was able to say right then. “Hi, Xion.”

Everything had kind of been a blur ever since he’d woken up on the beach. All the details of what happened were a bit fuzzy, but he still remembered everything that had happened before he arrived here vividly…except…how he arrived here in the first place. He never seemed to be able to figure out how he wound up in places. He was always forced into these situations. Roxas really hated having such little control over his life sometimes. But he was a Nobody…what could he do? Roxas sometimes spent large parts of his days sitting out on the beach, primarily during sunset. It reminded him of some of the simpler times. Today was no different, either. There he was, again, as usual, sitting out on the beach, looking into the sun that was just starting to set. There were other people there too. Some passing by, some sitting along other parts of the beach…but Roxas was alone. He felt pretty alone too. He didn’t know anyone here, and how was he supposed to introduce himself? “Hello, my name is Roxas and I don’t have a Heart?” Yeah, that would be a good topic for conversation.
