Carter smiled and nibbled on the end of her fork. If she was being honest she probably asked her to hang out because of Brennan; Carter wasnât exactly a people person. She had two friends and that was almost too much for her. But there was a part of her that saw who she used to be in this girl, how much of a difference one stroke of good luck made. âWell, that was my evil plan. Use pizza as bait and then after a while itâll be too late for you to back out.â
She nodded her head slightly and tucked a loose strand of her hair behind her ear. âJust let me know. Having absolutely no life means Iâm usually free.â Carter fumbled around inside of the front pocket of her camera bag until she found a pen and a torn edge of some flyer from a club she was never going to join. âThatâs my number, if you ever want to do something,â she said as she wrote down her number and then handed it to her.Â
A number. Nice. This girl obviously wanted her to stalk her. But getting ahold of Brennanâs friends phone number was just amusing. If you ever want to do something. Roxy couldnât help the smirk making it past her lips as she stared deeply at the girl, all while shoving desperate amounts of funnel cake in her mouth. She seemed like a child that had been in hunger for too long and this was her very first meal in a while. It wasnât really far fetched from the truth.
âNoted..â The paper was tucked into her jeansâ back pocket. In a way, she felt achieved, getting a girlâs number always was not that she ever tried but it made her feel a sense of grandeur. Desired, in a way. She wanted to say that there would be something in return for her, but really, Roxy didnât have anything to give in return but drugs.
Brennan tried his best to keep himself composed as Roxy continued to cry. He had thought the news of his heart condition was the worst thing heâd ever have to face, but her words hit him hard and he had to fight his own tears back. âI love you too,â he told her, his hand still massaging her back, because he had no idea how to make her feel better. It had been easier when they were kids, but they were older now and Roxy wouldnât believe it if he told her âItâs going to be alright,â because they both knew it wasnât going to be.
Hearing her next few words, Brennan worried his bottom lip between his teeth. Vowing right then and there that he was never going to tell Roxy about his heart condition. If this was how she was over a nightmare, he didnât want to even picture how she would be if she knew about that. Brennan wrapped his arms tighter around his sister, because he knew that only words wouldnât cut it with them anymore. âI told you I never wouldâŠand I meant it. Whatever happens, whatever we might have to face, donât think for one second that Iâm going to let that get in the way of me keeping that promise to you.â
A few minutes were spent in complete silence. Tears vanished with time, as she welcomed the calm and let herself relax under her brotherâs caring touch. In that moment, nothing else mattered. Her brother always seemed to manage to calm her down. It had always been that way, even when they were mere children. For some reason, this reminded her of the nights she would wake up crying, endless cursing and screaming beyond her bedroomâs door when their parents fought. And all Brennan did was to make sure she was okay. He was the only one who ever really cared and that hadnât changed throughout the years.
A sigh left her lips as she gently pulled back, sad eyes focused on the hand-me down worn striped sheets that covered her bed. âCan you stay with me?â Roxy asked, though she was embarrassed to look up and meet her brotherâs gaze. She knew very well, her face was most likely puffy from all the crying. But Roxy definitely wasnât planning on sleeping alone any longer.

Brennanâs heart ached as he listened to Roxy cry. If there was one thing in the world he wished he never had to hear, it was that. He hadnât seen her like this since they were kids, but it hurt just the same. As she reached out to hug him, he quickly moved closer to her and held her and wrapped his arms around her.. His hand rested on the back of her shoulder for a moment before he started to move it in circular moments on her back in attempt to calm her down. âItâs okay, you donât have to talk about it,â Brennan told her, his voice soft and comforting.Â
He felt like he had an idea of what the nightmare was about without Roxy telling him. He had noticed how scared she had been the day they saw the body at the festival. Brennan continued to rub her back comfortingly as he spoke, âJust know that I wonât ever let anything happen to you. You know that, right?â he told her, hoping to help her calm down a bit.
It wasnât herself that she was worried about. Her safety meant nothing if her brother ever came to be harmed. Her brother was the only thing she had in this stinky depressing world. Abandoned by her father, birthed by a careless mother. It only seemed fair when life gifted her with someone to confide on, someone to love, someone that would always be there for her. Like now, in her tight embrace. Arms didnât want to let go, for all she cared, she could fall asleep right there in his arms. But sleeping was out of the question, anyways. The images would surely come back, and she would try her best to avoid it.
The link they shared was like none other, linked by blood for life. A life without him wouldnât be alright and all Roxy hoped was that when it was time to go, when death finally claimed them back, she would be the first to go. âI love you..â she managed to mumble out, fingers holding tight onto him. âPlease promise you wonât ever leave me behind.â
I relate to the phrase âchillin like a villainâ because it shows that Iâm calm but also ready to sin
Carter tucked her bottom lip between her teeth and watched the girl eat for a second; which was probably rude as hell, but she was too busy thinking about how far into drugs Roxy had fallen. Sheâd seen it happen plenty of times. For her birth mom it started with weed and ended with her dying in a car accident that was her fault because she ran a red when she was high on cocaine. Her second foster family were mostly meth people, and her fifth liked heroin. Everyone else mostly stuck to alcohol and cigarettes. They were all dark paths and she hoped that Roxy wasnât too far down to get off while she could.Â
Not that it was her place to say anything. Just because she knew Brennan didnât mean that she knew anything about who Roxy really was. âWell, thanks, but no thanks.â She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and looked down at her funnel cake; she wasnât really hungry anymore. âBut, um, if you want to do something else some other time, thatâd be cool.â Carter smiled slightly and shrugged her shoulders. âPizzaâd be on me.âÂ
Why hadnât she met this girl before? It seemed she was very keen on inviting her to things. Actually, it was more of a surprise - have someone offer something to her for nothing in return. âThat sounds tempting..â she started, her smile turning into her signature smirk as dark eyes surveyed the girl. âI canât exactly say no to pizza.â Roxy wondered if this was some sort of plan from Brennanâs part into deviating her from drugs, by having his friends invite her to things and whatnot.Â
âMaybe..â Her bottom lip was gently chewed as she stared at the girl, still dumbfounded that sheâd somehow found her weakness. Things like pizza, funnel cakes and some other things that surrounded her, she couldnât exactly afford, so it was all pretty tempting. Plus it didnât hurt actually knowing this girl. She could be of some use as a hookup. Maybe.Â
