Artist Stanislav Szukalski was once considered Poland’s greatest living artist in the 1930s, but he left for the US after the Nazis invaded, where he lived in a Chicago slum apartment.
There, he developed the theory of Zermatism, the belief that humans evolved on Atlantis, which was in the Pacific and around Easter Island, and that humankind is forever locked in battle with descendants of Yeti who raped human women, known as the Yetisyny (Sons of the Yeti), who are responsible for all evil on earth. He drew world leaders to show they had Yeti ancestry and features.
Much like his fellow Chicagoan, outsider artist and eccentric, Henry Darger, most of Szukalki’s theory of Zermatism (over 40,000 pages!) remains unpublished, except a small part in a great collection, Behold!!! the Protong.
Just like with Henry Darger, the line between original thinker, eccentric, creative, and crazy person are all blurred. He’s startlingly original, weirdly beautiful, and creative.
“The fact that humans have syphilis is due to rapes by these Pans, and all the wart-nosed Greek philosophers, the pot-bellied, waddling pygmoids, were actually descendants of such interspecies bastardy … It is of the utmost importance to know that our Human Destiny is afflicted with the greatest calamities (like the two World Wars) because our HUMAN female ancestors were raped by the Apes, the Yetis, the Sasquatches, and our male forefathers copulated with female anthropoids.”

Billions (Hong Kong Reflections)
‘how small and insufficient people can be made to feel.’ — Ward Roberts
in these eerie photographs taken in hong kong’s wealthy soho district, supernatural images of buildings yet to be built, full of people to replace the living, are superimposed onto the columns of crowded nightlights. there is a visceral loneliness, pace, speed, and competition among the millions of expendable people residing in those edifices; a three dimensional premonition of the rich overpowering the poor. these are photographic evidence that roberts had comprehended a sparkling, contradictory city that never sleeps, even before he made his way to the concrete jungle of new york city.
