How my question has changed.

My HMWQ was modified due to the time I had left to complete this project, and soon instead of “How might we help less fortunate people deal with the cold” turned to “ How might we educate students on the importance of staying warm in the winter” which in total honesty I loved my project and how it turned out so I’m totally okay with the changes I had to make.

Reflection

This semester while planning out my discovery day project I went through the five steps of the design process.

EMPATHY:

I chose something that affects all of us, especially here in Rosseau, The cold. Sometimes boarding students come from warm places so they are not always prepared for the winter here at Rosseau.

I want to communicate with the students to let them know what to wear so that they can be fully prepared.

DEFINE:

My problem was that not every boarding student that comes here is fully prepared for what the winter is really like. Sometimes we go to like -40 degrees celsius.

Some students come from really warm places, so the change from that to this, can be a little hard.

IDEATE:

I created a website to inform students on the importance of staying warm in the winter, and the consequences of not doing so. I included, conditions like frostbite and trench foot, the proper clothing to wear, interesting factoids and an interesting video about snowflakes. My purpose on the website is for people to get something out of it, so that I don’t just do this for discovery days but this actually stays and people can still browse through it. Especially new students ( like for next year).

PROTOTYPE:

When I made my first draft of the website, I sent out an email to all the students and teachers to please check it out and give me feedback on it. After receiving a couple of suggestions I decided to cut some stuff out and put in some more.

TEST:

To make sure I really have ,my teachers attention, I have created a presentation with flashcards to communicate my website.

Reflection

For this semester’s discovery day project, I made a website explaining the importance of staying warm in the winter and what can happen if you are not. I sent out the first copy to all the students and teachers and asked for suggestions. After receiving a fair amount of responses, I added some more things to it and took some out. The final result is a website that informs you what is best to wear in the winter, interesting factoids to spice it up a bit, and some consequences of not taking the proper precautions you have to take during the winter. There is also a little interesting video that talks about snowflakes.

My original HMWQ was: How might we help less fortunate people deal with the cold? Due to the time I had to do this project I decided to abandon that idea and change my question. How might we educate students on how to stay warm in the winter and the consequences of not doing so?

That was probably the biggest obstacle, not managing the time right and having to change my question was a little weird but it turns out that I love the project even more now.

I learned some pretty nasty disorders that I had no idea were a thing, like trench foot…. Barf.

I also learned to manage my time and to not set such a high goal in such little time. I learned how to do a pretty awesome website that includes a lot of information regarding the cold and why it is so important to be prepared for it.

I can use this attempt of a discovery day project, to learn from my mistakes. Next semester… I will be managing my time better. I also want to get out of my comfort zone, because I recently learned that it’s something really important in order to find myself. I learned that it’s always going to feel wrong at the beginning, but it’s always going to be worth it in the end.

I finished my website and I sent it to RLC students for them to read it and now I am waiting to hear back from them.

I’m finishing up my website to inform people on the risks of not having the proper winter clothing and how might we help people that don’t have it or can’t afford it.

My next step is to send out a form encouraging people to check the website out and I also am going to print some fliers out this weekend.

What cold weather does to our body

I love this song because whenever I’m doing something I can just sing along and practice my rapping skills while still acting it out.

Cold weather is 20 times as deadly as hot weather, says a new study out today. From 1985 to 2012, 5.4 million people died from the cold while 311,000 died from the heat.

It supports my point in saying that the cold weather can be very dangerous and can be deadly. That’s why it’s very important to be warm and to have the proper clothing
