I was not stubborn.
No, of course not. You just refused to do anything anyone told you. Everything just had to be your idea.

Oh, like you were so perfect.
I never claimed to be perfect, Derek. I can see your competitive side hasn’t changed.
I’m not acting competitive.
Yeah, and I wasn’t stuck as a wolf for over four years.
I was not stubborn.
No, of course not. You just refused to do anything anyone told you. Everything just had to be your idea.

What was Derek like as a little kid?
Stubborn. Competitive. Constantly wanting everything that everyone else had. I mean, don’t get me wrong, he was a great kid, he just lost his temper a lot. Learning control can be difficult if you’re not willing to try. Derek wasn’t willing, not at first. Not until Alex was born anyway. I think his biggest motivation was not wanting to hurt his little brother. He would have done anything for Alex.
Do you have any funny stories you want to share?
Oh, I have plenty!
Like the time Laura called Derek a brat and he got so angry that he wolfed out and tore through her room. By the time we realized where he went and what he was doing, there was eye shadow all through his hair and foundation all over his clothes. I’ve never seen Laura get so mad.

rperica:
She cackled a little at Derek’s reaction and Tyler’s enthusiasm. Tyler seemed alright, anyone who could get on Derek’s nerves both terrified and excited her.
“There isn’t really a dull moment now, either,” she confirmed, crossing over the floor and hopping into a chair to face them, dropping her cheetos bag to the ground, forgotten.
Especially recently, she thought, thinking of Peter mysteriously showing up without a limb. She shook her head and continued to smile. “Poor Derek must feel so old,” she teased.
Derek narrowed his eyes at Erica, scowling. “Watch it, Reyes. I may be old, but I can still kick your ass in training.”
Tyler snorted and rolled his eyes. “Always the competitive one in the family.” He poked one of Derek’s muscles, eyeing them consideringly. “No matter how many times he lost.” He figured Derek would be good competition now. He just might be able to kick Tyler’s ass.
After a moment, Tyler shrugged, returning his attention to Erica. “But if he’s old, I must be ancient.”
He was only a couple years older than Derek, but sometimes he felt much older than that. That probably had something to do with being stuck as a wolf for so long, he realized.

rperica:
Erica burst out laughing and grinned at Derek. “I’m so upset! I can see why Alex wouldn’t mention it, but Cora? Her and I are close, we share secrets. We have sleepovers where all we do is complain about you and she never brought this up!”
She pointed an accusing finger at Derek. “You must have something really good on her to keep her quiet,” she surmised, wondering what it could be.
Tyler clapped a hand on his cousin’s shoulder, grinning. “Oh, I have plenty more where that came from.” He peered at Derek, lifting an eyebrow. “And I’m sure he has plenty on Cora too.”
He laughed. “There was never a dull moment at the Hale house.”
Derek closed his eyes briefly and shook his head. Even with all the time he spent in the forest, Tyler hadn’t changed at all. He was still the same smartass he’d been as a teenager, just...slightly less annoying.

rperica:
Erica snorted, thinking about her friend. “She’s funny, but more in a blunt, accidental way than anything. She still doesn’t understand a lot of social things. She tries to fit in as much as she can but she just can’t reconcile a lot of it with what she knows about the world. Malia kinda says fuck you to a lot of societal rules, and I don’t blame her.” Erica’s smile turned soft. “She’s always the first one in a fight, backing up Scott or Derek.”
That’s probably what Erica appreciated most about Malia, that she could rely on her. She almost made a comment about her being willing to murder people more readily than anyone else but Stiles, but kept it to herself.
Derek found himself smiling as Erica talked about Malia, hearing the unstated comment about Malia’s willingness to fight, to kill. It was always reassuring to have someone like Malia in the pack, knowing that she’d stop at nothing to protect the ones she cared about. And when her and Stiles got an idea in their heads...well, there was little he could do to stop them. Both of them seemed peculiarly inclined toward murder. Maybe that was why Derek felt particularly close to both of them, he recognized that same darkness in himself, but refused to let it take hold of him.
Tyler caught Derek’s smile and grinned, nudging him companionably. “She definitely sounds like a Hale.”
At Derek’s rolled eyes, Tyler chuckled. “Derek was never fond of societal rules as a kid. Well...”
Derek pinned him with a glare, but there was no heat behind it. He was starting to remember why he’d gotten into so many fist-fights with his cousin as a kid.
Tyler’s grin turned cheeky, his eyes lighting up with amusement. “Let’s just say Derek didn’t like to wear clothes as a kid...or shift out of his beta form...”

rperica:
Erica watched Derek squirm and was caught between wanting to blurt out everything about Peter, this man who had done her no favors, or letting Derek do it.
She bit her lip and chewed on it before shrugging. “Yeah, he’s, um, really smart. Always catches us by surprise.” She looked at Derek and then bore a hole into the wall by Tyler’s head. She quickly veered the conversation back to Malia before she said anything else itching to come out.
“She’s really catching up on everything she missed, she’s gonna graduate with us. We’re proud of her.”
Tyler didn’t miss the sudden tension in the room or the offhanded way Erica spoke about Peter. He wanted to ask, to demand for someone to tell him something. He was so frustrated with being treated so delicately, like he was going to break just because he’d been gone for so long. He was stronger than his cousin gave him credit for. He could handle whatever it was he was keeping secret.
Before he got the chance to say anything, Erica had already carried on, changing the subject back to the cousin he hadn’t met yet. He was curious about that too. If Malia was Erica’s age, and she looked to be the same age as Cora, then why hadn’t any of them known about her? He knew that Peter had been the enforcer of the pack and hadn’t been allowed any attachments...but surely that didn’t include his own offspring?
He smiled genuinely about the news, proud of Malia for making such a comeback. “That’s great! What’s she like?”

rperica:
Erica eyed the door longingly before resting her gaze on Tyler. She wouldn’t look at Derek. “She’s my age, a few months older, I think,” she slowly said, wanting to chew her nails but stopping because she felt self conscious.
She didn’t want to give more information then she needed to, in case she upset Derek more than he already was.
“She’s really smart,” she added, folding her arms against her chest.
Tyler smiled softly, his expression turning warm. A small sense of pride swelled in his chest at the mention of his cousin’s intellect. The Hales had always been intelligent, calculating, and resourceful. Even Derek was smart, but Tyler knew how much he liked to hide it. He doubted that had changed about Derek. Derek wasn’t apt to change much. He was, and would always be, the kindhearted (if not significantly misguided) wolf his mother raised him to be.
Tyler nodded in response to Erica. “Yeah, that doesn’t surprise me. Peter was smart in high school too.”
Derek shifted uneasily beside him, glancing between the two of them before averting his gaze to the opposing wall. He hadn’t had the chance to tell Tyler how different things were now -- how different Peter was or all the things Peter had done. Derek was a little afraid to. Peter, as well as Laura, had been someone Tyler was fond of growing up. Peter had actually been someone Tyler looked up to...

rperica:
Erica looked like a deer about to be hit by a car. She glanced at the door, to Derek, then Tyler’s hand, to the door again.
“I, um…” she tried, clenching her jaw shut. “I shouldn’t…” She glared at the wall. This was already hard for Derek and she was making it worse. Making her alpha worse. She winced and her eyes darted to the door again.
Derek felt a lot of old feelings for his cousin resurface in that moment. Resentment. Envy. Annoyance. Tyler was always doing things, saying things, to get on his nerves. He always rubbed Derek the wrong way, even without meaning to.
Derek turned his gaze to Erica. “You can stay.”
It would be better that way. He needed someone to make sure he didn’t maul his cousin.
Tyler relaxed into an easy smile and clapped a hand on Derek’s shoulder, feeling more comfortable, more at home. Maybe being back in Beacon Hills wouldn’t be so bad after all.
“So,” he clapped his hands together and sat forward, giving all of his attention to Erica. “Tell me more about this cousin. How old is she?”
Cinnamon Wolf || Tyler & Erica
rperica:
Erica’s brow crinkled. So, trauma then. That’s usually why people stayed in their animal forms. He must have been at the fire, too.
Derek really, really, needed better communication skills.
“Malia’s your cousin, she was a coyote for half her life,” she said helpfully, before looking like a kicked puppy when Derek glared at her.
She wanted to add, not even Peter knows, but she cemented her mouth shut and started to inch her way towards the back door. “I should go, or something.” She offered awkwardly.
Tyler lifted his eyebrows in surprise, looking at Derek imploringly. They had a cousin? Who was alive? But who’s-- Realization dawned on him and he slapped Derek’s arm. “Derek! Why don’t you tell me these things? Peter has a kid?”
Derek turned his glare to his cousin and nodded stiffly before glancing down at his hands.
When Erica said she was going to go, Tyler turned to her and put out a hand. “No, don’t go. I like you. You’re much more informative than my cousin.”

rperica:
Erica hummed, setting the bottle down on the floor. She crossed her arms and chewed her lip thoughtfully. “You should tell everyone, before they freak out. After what happened to Peter…” She shrugged, her eyebrows creased.
She still itched to comfort Derek from another earth shaking realization but didn’t know how to do it in front of stranger.
She eyed him for a moment and sniffed before rolling her eyes. “He smells like Malia did, when we found her,” she commented.
“Peter?” Tyler questioned instantly, looking to Derek. “What happened to Peter?”
Derek sighed, sitting forward and folding his hands together. He really wished Erica hadn’t said anything. He hadn’t had the chance to tell Tyler anything about Peter yet. He hadn’t told Tyler anything about Peter yet.
Derek frowned. “He showed up a few days ago without an arm.” He turned his attention to Erica. “That’s because he’s been living as a wolf for the past few years.”
Tyler furrowed his eyebrows. Peter was missing an arm? “Is Malia another wolf? What happened to Peter’s arm?”
Derek closed his eyes, running a hand over his face. “Malia is a coyote, a werecoyote. Nobody knows what happened to Peter’s arm.”
Cinnamon Wolf || Tyler & Erica
rperica:
“I’m a gift, Derek, a delight,” she enthused, slurring a bit. Tequila always hit her hard and fast and boy did she want it.
She watched them for a moment before slouching against the wall. “So, like, does anyone else know you found him, or whatever?” She asked, taking another swig and frowning. She knew that it was like to learn of having family you didn’t know about, or had thought were gone. Derek kept having his past drug up and the wanted to curl up against him for it. Instead she kicked on her high heels in annoyance.
Derek rolled his eyes at her, but his lips twitched up despite his irritated facade. He glanced at Tyler and shook his head. “Alex was the one who found him. He’s the only one who knows.”
Tyler pursed his lips, still feeling a bit out of place. He took the moment to get a good look at Erica. Had it been a few years prior, he would have probably flirted with her easily, maybe tried to hook up with her. But he wasn’t in high school anymore. He wasn’t the same person anymore. He wasn’t even sure he knew how to flirt with someone anymore, not after spending the past few years as a wolf. The only thing he knew how to do was growl and scare away critters in the forest.
Cinnamon Wolf || Tyler & Erica
rperica:
“You’re never polite, is Stiles trying to teach you manners?” She retorted, leaning against the wall and brazenly uncapping the tequila. She thought about how everyone had seemed too busy trying to live a normal life, and then Peter showing up sans an arm. More danger and they weren’t ready.
She took a huge gulp and then squinted. “Did anyone spike this yet?” She asked hopefully, not wanting to deal with it.
Erica ignored his comment and clutched the bag closer to her before drinking more.
She was curious about this cousin and everything that went along with it but the Hale’s were always secretive and she didn’t want to put in the effort.
Derek ignored her comment about Stiles and huffed, crossing his arms over his chest.
Tyler frowned. What the hell was a Stiles? And why was the Stiles teaching Derek manners? Had Derek still not learned any? Not surprising, Tyler thought. Derek had always been defensive and grumpy.
Tyler smirked at Erica’s rhetorical question about the vodka and chuckled despite himself. “I like her.”
Derek rolled his eyes. “You like her now. Wait until you get to know her.”
Safe Place || Derek & Tyler
rpderek:
“So, you ran,” Derek concluded, approaching him slowly and taking a seat next to him. He rested his head back against the tree and stared off into the distance. He felt Tyler shift next to him and assumed he was nodding. He glanced at his older, but younger looking, cousin with a frown.
“Where did you go?” he questioned. “Why didn’t you come back?”
“Would you come back?” Tyler questioned, looking at his cousin. Sitting this close, Tyler was finally able to get a good look at Derek. There was something so familiar about his eyes, something both cold and soft. They reminded him of Talia, Tyler realized. He smiled softly when Derek looked away.
“I thought everyone was dead,” Tyler muttered. “I couldn’t come back here. I didn’t think I had a reason to.”
He sat in silence for a moment, glancing down at his hands in his lap. He scratched idly at some dirt on his fingernail with a frown. “I’ve spent so many years running from this place, from what happened. I didn’t think I had it in me to come back here.”
He chanced a glance at the younger man, noticing his understanding frown, and smiled sadly. “Derek, if I would have known you were alive...that Alex and Laura...”
He paused, noticing the way Derek’s expression darkened. “Is Laura--?”
