Hi mods! I did check the rules but was wondering if you could go into detail about what's required of beta readers? I've got a decent grasp of spelling and grammar but would probably be of more use as an alpha reader (helping with planning, plot holes etc) and I wanted to check if that's needed at all?

Hi Anon! Thanks for asking!

Some of our writers are definitely looking for that 'alpha reading' level work from a beta reader. It really depends on the writer - when we match beta reader / writer pairs we try our best to make sure there is alignment as far as what a beta reader feels capable of offering and what a writer is looking for (you'll notice there are some questions geared toward this on the sign up form). Of course, you'll also have a conversation with your specific writer about what they'd like from you.

This year we're matching writer/beta pairs earlier on so the betas CAN provide that sort of help (it was harder last year, since the pairings came a bit later on).

Tl;dr in addition to SPAG help, there will absolutely be an opportunity to read for plot holes, help plan, etc. depending on what you as a beta are looking to help with.

Hi Anon! YES! This year we're letting writers post with staggered updates. In order to keep up with the fest, fics will need to be completed by the deadline and posted in entirety within a set time frame. But staggered updates are allowed this year!

Wolfstar Big Bang Sign Ups Still Open!

This is just a friendly reminder from your Wolfstar Big Bang mods that the first round of sign ups for writers and beta readers close on March 29 (at which point we’ll make some initial writer/beta pairings, the second round of sign ups will remain open until May 1). Sign ups for artists will remain open until August 7.

You are eligible to participate in the Wolfstar Big Bang as a writer if you have a 20k+ completed fic (in any pairing) posted on AO3, and as a beta reader if you have either been a beta reader in the past, or have not been a beta reader but meet the fest writer requirements.

We look forward to having you! Use the links below to sign up for the relevant role. As a reminder, writers can participate as betas and vice versa, but artists may only participate as artists. This helps us preserve the anonymity of the fic selection process.

hi! asking out of curiosity, but why do you have requirement for beta readers?

Hi Anon!

Writing, and editing, a Big Bang fic is a gigantic commitment. Our word limit is 20k and many fics wind up being much longer. Beta reading a novel-length, multi-month project as your very first beta reading experience can be super daunting and we want to give all of our writers and beta readers the best shot possible at a good experience. With that said, if you're interested in participating and you've never beta read before (and aren't a writer), but you think you have the experience or you want to give it a shot please reach out off of anon, we'd be happy to chat!

Please see our Tumblr for more information (important pages are also linked below). We’re making a few changes to the timeline and to how works are being posted this year, so please find those changes under the cut (spoiler: staggered updates are allowed!).

If you’re not familiar with a Big Bang, here’s a quick rundown: The goal of this fest is to bring authors, artists, and beta readers together to create content for a community and ship we love so much. First, authors will write fics (20-100k words in length) with the help of a beta reader (you may join the fest with a beta reader, or one will be assigned to you). Then, authors will be paired with artists, who will create two art pieces related to the fic. Since this is the Wolfstar Big Bang, all pieces should feature end game Wolfstar (Remus Lupin x Sirius Black).

We’re glad you asked! The timeline for this year’s big bang has been adjusted slightly (find the timeline here). Though the writing period is slightly shorter, we are hoping to help writers move full steam ahead with workshopping and writing days.

Additionally, writers will have the opportunity to post their works chapter by chapter within a set time period, provided they are willing to work closely with mods. Generally, writers will be given a set period through which they may post and a deadline to post their final chapter. If you choose this option you are expected to keep in close contact with mods (who will remain a 'co-author' on your fic until it is fully posted) to make sure the fest runs smoothly! You may, of course, opt to post all at once if you so wish!

Does the bang consider temporary character death related to time travel (à la time travel/time loops, etc.) as MCD if the character belongs to Wolfstar? Is there a difference in your answer if the fic has a guaranteed happy ending versus a happy for now versus an ambiguous/open ending?

Hi Anon! We'd love to chat with you off Tumblr, because it seems like this is a nuanced question. My *personal* take is that for something to be formally tagged as MCD the character should die and remain dead, but we're totally open to chatting over email or Discord if you're open to sharing more of your fic/idea with us!

Hi, I was looking at the schedule and was wondering: What is the difference between the March 29 "soft close" and the May 1 "hard close" for authors/betas?

Hi Anon! Good question. After March 29 we'll start the process of pairing writers and beta readers, but we didn't want to fully close sign ups so early. Writers or betas are welcome to join after the 29th with the understanding that it might take a little longer to pair you with your "other half", or you can join with your own writer/beta pair until May 1.
