i love that everyone agrees that narumi is the one that has to go to new york bc that's the most dangerous location in their list of dangerous locations. they need to assemble the strongest lineup of soldiers and narumi is essential for that plan. which is why it's so funny when he just outright refuses LOL the plan revolved around him going and he threw it all to shit by saying no.
look at him in the background while they're talking about the level of mass destruction the kaiju could wreck on new york. he's so funny, he does not gaf.

so he turns down the expedition. but then he turns around and starts to actually work on paperwork and his duties as a captain, and he shocks everyone bc he doesn't DO that.
like this shit is so fucking funny. he's so smart and is truly capable of doing the work but it's so BENEATH him. this is why he doesn't bother wasting his time. it's also just really funny how everyone's scared, this truly is not him.
so they get deployed for kaiju extermination and narumi is just. on another level. he wipes everything out and confirms to his division that he refused the expedition because he has to stay in japan. and they get SO mad because he essentially said that he doesn't trust them to protect japan without them. he's put them through rigurous training and still, he doesn't trust them to stand strong without him. and they're right, he does feel that way!
and it pisses them off so bad that they disobey direct orders the next time they're sent out. which really cracks me up bc narumi is the first one to go against orders from his superiors, he's mentioned before that he doesn't care about manners or anything so lond as the results are there.
his face kills me. he can't believe shinonome and tachibana told him to sit down and stay out. and then he goes ahead and tramples on their pride even more, clearing the kaiju they were going to take on without breaking a sweat. he reminds them that they can't neutralize kaiju on emotion alone, that they need the strength that they're lacking.
and then we get this scene where he tells them he will not forgive the next disobeyment of direct orders and i think it's so fascinating that we don't see his face. narumi is such an expressive and emotive character, that when we get scenes where his face is purposely obstructed or hidden away, i find them as the moments where we're the closest to his true thoughts and feelings. he knows they're not strong enough to take on stronger kaijus without him. he knows people die all the time. but he cares about the first division, these people are his family. i think narumi's face is hidden bc he's truly concerned over them doing something reckless like this again.
which is obviously not picked up by tachibana and shinonome! they're too focused on how little he thinks of them, of how large the gap between their strenghts and skills are! which then is like. well of course when given a suit that could help her reach the levels of narumi, shinonome is going to accept it no matter the possible dangers she might face while using it. and when a kaiju strikes and shinonome offers to be the main combatant, hasegawa tells her this.
because not anyone can step into that role. the weight that narumi carries is one that not everyone can handle. but still, she agrees. because the first division is hungry for that recognition, to stand where he stands and be the strongest defenders. and unlike narumi, hasegawa trusts shinonome with this. he prepares the tactics around her and sends the division into battle.
they don't want to be known as the strongest purely because of narumi. they want to be recognized by their own strengths.
which is just so awesome when they struggle with the plant kaiju. shinonome is truly going through it and the entire time, narumi is just watching with suited and sagan while waiting for his clozer suit to be ready.
i do like this moment too. it's just another little hint at how protective he can be of his own, how he doesn't like that suited put shinonome in a suit that hasn't been tested yet without his knowing. it also does make me laugh that narumi, who lies and hides behind false bravados and this persona he's made for himself, is being completely honest when he says he doesn't care about the actual clozer suit. he's just pissed hoshina got one before he did.
the way he tries to rush suited to finish the suit, the way sagan tells him to forget the suit and go help the division and how he LISTENS to her. there's no way you can tell me he doesn't care about his division. he hides it behind mean remarks and harsh feedback but who can blame him when isao shinomiya was his teacher? and then shinonome tells him to fuck off. not really, she says back off but i know what she wanted to say. and he's SPEECHLESS at the disrespect but he knows. he knew from the moment they acted out what this was about and hasegawa tells him as much. and this is where narumi has no choice but to back off because yes, he's worried but he'll put his trust in them. he'll give them a chance to prove their strength to him.
and they do it! especially shinonome. a shame about the kaiju match-up (unfortunately for plant kaijus, narumi really is the only one that can handle it) but when he steps on the battlefield, it's not to take over. it's to support.
i do love the little nod to narumi's side b episodes. they did that for me. but they work together, defeat the kaiju.
i have to say, also? i think she's trying to kill him. the closer suit doesn't fry his brain as badly as the green state of his weapons suit but it gets pretty close!
he makes me so mad. it's the way his team knew immediately why he acted the way he did, and he can't be caught caring about his teammates. the way he gaslights and then tries to deflect and spin the narrative drives me up the wall, he can't ever be caught in the act of caring. he hides how he feels behind a shitty personality and rude words when he isn't even fooling people a majority of the time. he's lucky to fool everyone this time but after telling them all those lies, he just turns around to then change his plans about new york.
