Field Flowers
September 2020
The changes in 2020 were drastic. I no longer live in NYC, my first love. The pandemic drove me to Vermont and eventually Upstate where I live with my partner in a converted barn in the middle of a hay field.
No more walks on crowded sidewalks. We walk trails alongside gorges.
Still the beginning of autumn is always warm and welcoming.
Autumn inspires me to take it all in, to absorb all I can, and to go with the flow.
It reminds me that if I can keep open my mind, heart, and eyes, that I may just come across a stunning view.

Augusten Burroughs showed me I’m a witch. Bae is, too. Also, my family. Perhaps his, as well.

Saw that pumpkin outside Jefferson Street station on the way home.
Two pumpkins are on my table ready to be carved.

Not a black cat, but we crossed paths.

Halloween was scary, but bae was there to protect me.
Cool things is that I ran into Teen the Band 👇🏽 Their last performance together was the night before. Sorry I missed it.

Sounds of the Warehouse
This album played at work today. It’s so funky and badass, I want to listen to it all the time.
The day I saw this bird, the Brooklyn-bound L train service was delayed for almost an hour at Union Square. I wound up taking the 6 to the M to Central Ave. An alternative route home. It means transferring twice instead of once, and the walk is longer.
It’s summer so the walk is pleasant, and it is an alternative route, nonetheless.
This bird was perched on the south side of Central station, and I only noticed it because I was walking out of the station really slowly. I wasn’t on my phone or scanning people’s faces. I was looking around.
I started by looking out the window from inside the train, at what was being done with space. As soon as we emerged from underground I noticed the way the bike path and roadway on the Williamsburg Bridge weaved above and below the train tracks. After passing several buildings and empty lots in the distance, I noticed how close the M train got to second-story windows.
Up and down, close and far, all of it was to distracting the thoughts weighing heavy on my mind. I was annoyed and tired. It was the fifth work day and I just wanted to be home. I felt financial pressure because it was the end of the month, bills had to be paid, and I had to decide whether to leave or stay in Bushwick. It was all very frustrating.
To my surprise though, looking around but not looking for anything, was rewarding. This bird did not flinch as I carefully pulled out my phone and inched obnoxiuously closer to get this angle. I gave the bird a mental high five once I hit capture. Then I hurriedly put my phone away and picked up my walk, excited with my luck.
Strange how for a few minutes it was easy to forget my troubles and enjoy a moment in the eye of a bird.

Walks before Work
I’ve started to take walks on the way to work. When I exit the subway, I walk around the block if I have time. It helps clear my mind from my subway ride and prep me up for work.
While walking though, I often see something interesting, and I happened to take photos of a few of them.
That guy was parked in front of this church:
That church is attached to a school and takes up an entire corner. When you turn the corner, you pass the side entrance:
My favorite part though is the doors:
I felt as though the doors drew me toward the church. I’ve walked in once, when they were open. I sat in a pew and opened a hymn book. I looked around and saw a few middle aged men dozing off. That’s about been my experience there.
But then again, saw this at the goth shop next to the church:
I know it’s early, but Halloween is coming. Happy summer.
