the worst thing about ardbert as a character is that they called him ardbert and before that you just knew him as 'the warrior of darkness' which is arguably even worse. and they gave this terribly named man the most generic White Guy No. 4 character design you've ever seen in your life so when you first meet him you're like pffft there is no way you will make me care about this dude. and then the game pushes you in the dirt and says you WILL care 🫵 you are going to cry over this man. you are going to cry so fucking hard.

and then of course you do. and then you have to reckon with the fact you're now emotionally invested in a guy called ardbert

My own hot take is that the player community can do a lot to make the game engaging for new players, in ways that don't involve saying 'hey how can we have less story or make the story matter less?' Embrace the fact that a lot of people play FFXIV for the story and

don't rush your sprout friends through MSQ.

stop telling sprouts ARR is bad.

stop telling sprouts Stormblood is bad.

do some low-level activities (maps, hunt marks, roulettes, etc) with your sprout friends so they can feel included. yes even if the in-game rewards aren't hugely valuable to you. do things with your sprout friends. include them.

stop telling sprouts the game only gets "good" after X thousand hours of gameplay.

don't tell sprouts to skip side content just because you want them to catch up faster.

let sprouts enjoy the journey.

you BETTER be waiting for sprouts in cutscenes (most players are good about this).

seriously don't rush your friends. I know you want to raid with them. I know you want to talk about Shadowbringers with them. be patient. let them enjoy the journey. enjoy it with them.

the most frustrating thing about ARR to me is I think that it couldn't really have been any other way. it's trying to wrap up loose ends from 1.0 while also laying groundwork for future stories while also establishing the world and its most important people for new players while also trying to tell a contained story of its own. it's pulled in a dozen directions at once and the fact that it's even a little coherent is a miracle

I know the identity the Crystal Exarch is like, the worst kept spoiler in FFXIV against some stiff competition, but WAS it a surprise for any of you out there? Or something that you figured out on the way, even?

To be fair, I don't think it was even meant to be that hidden for the players or for the WoL to catch on, it was just the lack of acknowledgement meant to keep you wondering if this was OUR G'raha or was there something else going on, which was the far more interesting point.

So with that still in mind, I think it is still a spoiler to just tell people they are one and the same because it then takes away the little bits of doubt that are woven into the story .

Consider: Where Thancred was during the Bloody Banquet? Out on a balcony trying to woo another maiden. Consider the peeks we see of Thancred throughout Post-ARR. Recovering from Lahabrea's possession and promising to do better but always falling back into his old ways or perhaps using that to cope with his mistakes of ARR. Yes, we see him in the middle of a spat with several women arguing over him, flirting with F'lhaminn, and trying to out drink Moenbryda. He is not focused, he is not on his A game, he isn't paying attention to what goes on around him. Allowing Ilberd and Teledji's coup to go unnoticed save for by Riol, who starts picking up threads of it when its too late. And then, the Bloody Banquet happens. Thancred and Y'shtola are sucked into the Flow spell. He loses his aetheric powers and sight in his eye for time. And Minfilia is gone. Forever. And from that point on, he never shifts focus until Shadowbringers. Where he is holding onto Ryne so hard, he doesn't see how it is hurting her.
