Astrid had somehow survived finals and decided to reward herself by buying a cup of coffee. She walked into the little cafe fully intending to just grab something to drink and then leave, but when she spotted Ruby lying on the couch she couldn’t help it when her feet brought towards the other girl. Who knew Ruby could actually be peaceful and quiet? The blonde thought to herself with a smirk. Then right after thinking that she gave her friend a good punch in the arm, “Våkn opp, Ruby. You really need that coffee don’t you?”

As soon as she was punched in the arm, Ruby was in defense mode and she swung her leg out and tried to kick whoever had punched her, but ended up kicking the nearby coffee table instead. “Fuck!” She yelped and rolled off the couch, smacking her head on the ground. Now that she was awake, she looked up and saw Astrid and started to laugh. After a good two minutes of laughing, she sat up and sat back on the couch like nothing  happened. “Well that was fun.”

Eris could never stop herself from messing with things out of place. When she got coffee, she normally expected it to be rather mundane. But once she spot the girl sleeping as if she was dead on the couch, she couldn’t help but want to….talk to her. She made her way over to the blonde, coffee in hand. She kneeled so that she was in front of the girl and tapped her lightly on the shoulder. “Hello? Child, do you know where you are right now?”

Ruby was fast asleep, even after the woman tapped her shoulder. She did feel the tap however, because it tickled her shoulder and she reached up and scratched at the spot. When the stranger spoke to her, she grumbled slightly and buried her face in the crook of her arm. “Gå vekk Tate. Jeg prøver å sove.”

 Tate had been walking back from today’s gymnastics expedition, the slightest bit sore from a nearly missed jump. He’d grabbed a ledge all the same and slammed into a wall, but he hadn’t broken anything, which is what mattered. He stopped by a cafe for a snack, and found that they were calling his sister’s name. He took the coffee for her, and found her asleep on a couch. Laughing, he shook her awake with his free hand. “Våkn opp, søster. Coffee’s here.”

Normally, being shaken awake would have thrown Ruby into a flurry of punching whoever was touching her. Living with two older brothers taught her that. However, the familiar voice of her brother, kept her from punching him. If he hadn’t said anything, he would have gotten a punch in the face, but since he was genuinely waking her up, she refrained. Bright blue eyes slowly opened and she looked up at him, confused by her surroundings for a moment. “What?” She pushed herself up and yawned, rubbing her eyes with one hand while the other took the coffee from her brother. “The fuck? How long have I been sleeping?”

Dawson isn’t the only other patron that notices Ruby, though he does seem to be the only one with enough nerve to approach her. While others walk wide circles around her, point and whisper with their friends, or pull out their iPhones to snap a quick picture, Dawson plops down in the plush armchair adjacent to the couch where she sleeps and sips lukewarm tea from a festive paper cup decorated with tiny snowflakes. For a few minutes, he just watches her back rise and fall as she sleeps, marveling at the fact that she felt comfortable enough to fall asleep in a public place, wondering whether it was bravery or sheer stupidity that aided in her decision, and entertaining scenarios of all the ridiculous things he could do to wake her up. Grabbing an unopened straw off the small square table next to his seat, he tears off the wrapper and rolls a bit of it into a little ball. When he throws it at her he aims for her exposed ear but misses. So he tries again. 

Ruby didn’t expect to pass out while waiting for her coffee, but she also didn’t care that she had. At least, she wouldn’t care when she woke up. For the moment, she was sleeping rather peacefully. Something she definitely needed. She didn’t even wake when her name was called out repeatedly for her drink. She only stirred slightly when she felt something hit her ear. Grumbling in her sleep, she turned over on the couch and buried her face in the cushion with a few mumbled words. “La meg være i fred Kris.”

Finals had kicked Ruby’s ass. She was glad she decided to attend the nearest college while she was there at Astra, and it was definitely something that would help her in the long run, but she had never studied for something so hard in her life. After a sleepless night of finishing finals and projects, Ruby turned everything in the next day and now that she was out of class, she headed to the nearest cafe and bought herself the biggest cup of coffee they had. However, while waiting for said coffee, she got a little to comfortable on a couch, and soon enough, she was sprawled out on it, fast asleep.

Jane jumped when she heard the sound of a crushing bone, automatically recoiling into Ruby’s side once she wrapped her arm around her. She was happy to be walking away from him and his obscene yelling, calling both girls rather inappropriate names. Feeling a little bit bold, she flipped him off as they continued to walk away. “Yes, I’m okay,” the brunette whispered, trying to think about anything else. “Thank you. So much.” God, tonight was suppose to be a fun and entertaining night. It was suppose to celebrate something good that happened to her. And yet, she could have been… Shit, she didn’t want to think that word. “I just want to go home,” she whimpered yet she wasn’t sure if she meant ‘home’ as in the compound or ‘home’ as in England.

Ruby shrugged her shoulders slightly. “It wasn’t a problem. People like that need to learn and usually, violence is the only answer they’ll listen to. Sometimes that’s not even loud enough for them.” Ruby lead the other girl out of the bar and then stopped and looked over at her, shaking her head. “Oh no. You’re not going home. You can’t let some stupid guy like that ruin your night. We’ll go somewhere else and I’ll keep you safe. You looked like you were having fun before him, so let’s go back to that, yeah? I’m Ruby.”

When Jane found out that she was now an WWF Panda Ambassador, there was no way she could contain her excitement. She wanted to celebrate, so she gathered some friends she made while staying at the compound and they went on a little bar-hopping adventure. Jane wasn’t much of a big drinker, mostly reserving it for special occasions. Tonight, however, she wanted to have fun and made it an exception. She was dancing with a cute guy at the bar they recently went to, a few beers in and feeling a bit tipsy, yet she didn’t care. But once the guy began to become a little bit too handsy, warning bells went off in her head. “Hey, don’t do that,” she said nicely as she gently pulled away from him. Unfortunately for her, he didn’t take the hint and pulled her back to him and she began to struggle a little bit. “Hey! I said stop!”

Ruby was sitting on her own in the bar, beer in hand and bright blue eyes watching the people drinking and dancing. She didn’t normally come to places like this, but she wanted out of her room and to do something new. Good thing she had. Her eyes landed on a guy getting handsy with a girl who obviously didn’t want him to. Standing up, she downed the rest of her beer and then walked over, reaching out and grabbing the man by the back collar of his shirt. She yanked him away from the other girl and then let go, taking the time of him stumbling backwards to stand between the girl and the drunk. “Oi. She said no, so bugger off before I make you.” The man chuckled and that was when Ruby’s fist collided with the middle of his face. She heard the bone in his nose crunch and she smirked. “No means no. Learn that or I’ll break something else.” Ruby turned and put her arm over the girls shoulders, leading the girl away. “You okay?”

If Dawson’s head wasn’t already spinning Ruby’s flurry of questions definitely would’ve done the trick. For a long moment, all he can do is stare, clinging to the wall to keep himself on two feet. His clouded mind tries to make sense of the situation, feeding him one or two bite-sized pieces at a time. Girl. Blonde. Room. Ice. He opens his mouth to speak but ends up silently nodding his head instead. Knowing full well that he’s made a horrible first impression and not entirely sure which of her questions he’s even saying yes to, Dawson takes a small shaky step forward. He swallows hard as a surge of nausea attacks the pit of his stomach and starts to inch along the wall toward the elevators. “My room, yeah ━ I’m working on it, you know what people say, slow and steady wins the race or whatever.” His tongue feels a little clumsy, his voice a little rough, but at least he’s finally able to do something other than gape at the girl. “Fresh out of ice packs though. I was thinking about going old school, you know, put a raw steak on the sucker.” 

Ruby could tell he was struggling, so she shoved her bag of food into her backpack and then caught up to him inching along the wall. With her drink in her opposite hand, she used her free hand to pull his arm that wasn’t against the wall over her shoulder. “I’ll help you.” Her nose scrunched when he suggested just putting raw steak on his face. “I mean, you could, but then you’d just smell like raw meat. I’ll take you to my room and you can have one of mine. I’ve got more than enough, trust me.” She walked slowly with him, letting him set the pace as she helped him towards the elevators. “I’m Ruby.”

“Oh, dear. I’m not judging you. I am simply just saying you don’t match. Presenting yourself doesn’t have to mean anything to how you act. But how you look should be important to yourself and to others. That’s what mother always said.” It was obvious Minnie just didn’t understand where Ruby was coming from. In Minnie’s world it was all about how you looked at all times. Even lounging around she always made sure her outfit was nice. “You don’t even have to be rich to have nice clothes. Just be creative and you can work with everything. Many fashion designers prove this. Girls these days even make things to wear with duct tape… not particularly my taste but it’s fashionable nonetheless.” 

“Maybe ‘judging’ wasn’t the right word. I guess I meant assuming. You just assume that because someone doesn’t match, they don’t care about how they look? Looks aren’t everything and neither are clothes. Looks fade and clothes wear and tear. I don’t care how people think I look because the people who can look past the unmatching clothes and whatever else you deem ‘unsuitable’, those are the people I care about. The ones who can get to know me and accept me for who I am, fashion choices and the like.” By now, Ruby had closed her books and she was crossing her arms over her chest, clenching her hands into fists.

“Well! You definitely should. How you show yourself is just one part to how your personality comes off and well…that outfit. You know what… I shouldn’t have said anything. I have this thing where I can’t hold my tongue. I can’t help it most of the time.” She said still not loving the choice of clothes the girl wore and even causing Minnie to addictively pick at the hem of her black skirt. 

“Well I definitely don’t.” Ruby sat up straighter in her seat. She was getting angry, but she did her best to control herself. “That’s the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard. Haven’t you ever heard of the saying ‘don’t judge a book by it’s cover’? You’ve got no idea what people are going through in their lives, but just because you don’t like their outfit, you’re gonna just insult them? For me personally, I’m not a girly person. I don’t give a flying fuck. I don’t wear make-up or dress up. I make myself comfortable, but there are other people who maybe can’t afford nice clothes or are having a rough day or something. You never know, so do yourself a favor and work harder on the whole holding your tongue thing.”
