Friend: It is the end of days. Me: Good, I’ve had it up to here with days.
@witchofsound
I’ve never bothered to post anything myself, but I’ve seen a lot of people writing about Undertale’s recurring music motifs and how the songs have so many in common. Recurring video game music motifs get me out of bed (Castlevania, Fire Emblem, Legend of Zelda), so I put together a detailed graph of where each motif occurs. Each icon represents a motif, generally a melody but occasionally a particular style. The first three pages explain the icons I use for each motif, and the next five pages use those icons to show each motif in each of the game’s tracks.
The main reason I did this is because I kept noticing motifs that others would slip. Some are just all over the place and commonly missed, mainly “Don’t Give Up”, “Hopes”, and what I consider to be the three parts of Once Upon a Time. Most of the information is drawn from the Undertale wiki, this thread on Reddit, and me listening to the songs over and over.
EDIT
I corrected the above because the pictures were being shrunk too much. I just cut the chart into smaller pieces.

“Plague of Romance”
Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows was released the other day, and the verdict is out. By general consensus, players love the expanded levels and environments, the alternate story, the fleshing-out of minor characters, and the mechanics of controlling Plague Knight himself – but they’re cursing that forced romance plot with Mona.
Granted, this is understandable. Romance plots are all-too-often misused as an easy way to humanize a weird or unlikable character, and to generate plot with minimal effort. Plus, it’s also pretty annoying when a male character’s worth is defined by his ability to “get the girl,” and the girl in question is reduced to a device by which the protagonist’s character is explored. And let’s not forget all those tired, predictable romance cliches…
In short, I get it. I’m usually the first to criticize such lazy writing. Now let me tell you why you might be judging Plague of Shadows too hastily.

I’d like to add a few things to that!
First of all, let’s look at the character of Plague Knight as a concept: Why “Plague”? Sure, his mask resembles that of a plague doctor, but healing really isn’t his thing, and none of his effects are “poision” like (DPS or debuffs). So why “Plague” insted of siomething more fitting like “Alchemy Knight”
“Plague”, as we all know, is mostly used to refer to the “Black Plague”, a disease. And our minds have evolved to find healthy people attractive. So right off the bat, Plague Knight is associated with unattractiveness, add to that his short stature, especially in comparison to Mona, and the inferiority complex is sure to come.
Moreover, gameplay- wise, Plague Knight is far weaker than Shovel Knight: Where Shovel Knight runs fast, jumps high and uses one tool to it’s fullest potential, Plague Knight is slow, a bad jumper, and relies on external items much more than Shovel Knight- His many MANY bomb combinations, along with Life Tonics make him much more arsenal dependent and clumsy that Shovel Knight.
Next, let’s talk about the Magicist. Black Knight is convinced that she is Plague Knight’s romantic attraction, and so does she. Throught the game she seems interested, but in the end goes with “A real man” (Percy) insted. Character- wise, she is more traditionally beautiful than Mona, with fair skin to Mona’s green, blonde hair, more complacent personality, etc. But Plague Knight isn’t interested in her, he wants to be with quirky, bomb- happy, more flawed Mona. And that’s not from a “You’re probably the best I can get” place, but probably from seeing Mona as a better version of himself- a confident alchemist who shows their face.
Which brings us, finally, to his MASK. Masks usually symbolise hiding one’s self, but Plague Knight’s mask does a few more things:
First, they allow self projection of the player onto Plague Knight, the same as Shovel Knight’s helmet. Since the character is faceless, you- the player, can project a lot of you onto them. That’s why a lot of video game characters are silent, btw.
Second, that mask itself becomes a representation of Plague Knight’s mad scientists asperations. It’s his persona who seeks the ultimate potion to have ultimate power for himself, the persona who is cruel.
Don’t believe me? We’ll come back to that in a minute. Before we do, however, there is one last thing to discuss: The Final Boss.
The final boss has two stages: Plague of Shadows, and Corrupted Essence.
Plague of Shadows is just a Plague Knight silhouette which fights like Plague Knight in the original campaing. This is referance to the psychological term “Shadow”- one’s subconncious identity, the Mr. Hyde to Dr, Jekyll. In the case of Plague Knight, it’s his self image, This is further cemented in the next fight, agains the Corrupted Essence:
Corrupted Essence is, in essence (BA DUM TSS!) am exaggerated parody of Plague Knight: His mask is now not a mask but part of his physiology (and, when open, his weak spot) and he rides on what seems to be a giant bomb. The mask, again, representing Plague Knight’s mad scientist side, and the bomb being a reminder of physical weakness. Also, one of CE’s attacks is launching a few exploding Monas, which represent using Mona only as a tool, expandable (Which Mona accuses Plague Knight of doing after the 2nd battle with Black Knight). All this shows a clear image of what Plague Knight hates about himself, all his guilt.
When defeated, Plague Knight recieves a clear potion of ultimate power, but chooses not to drink it, but use it to blow up the tower, benefiting all his allies.
But in the end, Plague Knight doesn’t change a lot- the mask is still on. All that’s changed is that Plague Knight recognises his two sides- the gentle side that wants to be happy in the lab with Mona, but also his “Mask- side”, his scientific asperations, but not at all costs like before. The quote Mona and Plague Knight end on is “The bigger the explosion... The better the alchemist”, showing they haven’t given up their goals, but are shown to be not evil, but misunderstood. They just like blowing stuff up. In the end credits we see Plague Knight being knighted by the king (wasn’t he a knight before...?), collaborating with Mole Knight, having a date with mona, hosted by Propeller Knight, etc. The world has accepted Plague Knight. But we also see him throwing a bait bomb at Treasure Knight. He is still a mad scientist, but the moral here is that mad =\= evil.
All that, I believe, ties in with Plague Knight’s self image, as influenced by the outide world. I hope this is comprehensive and not just me rambling on about this game I like.

I am so pissed off right now at Inti Creates and Azure Striker Gunvolt! You put a token transgender sexual predator character into your game. Had I know this beforehand, I never ever ever would of purchased the video game in the first place. Heck, I’ll probably never touch the game again: it’ll remain unbeaten.
Zonda is a villain that embodies the Deadly Sin of Lust (that’s a motif in the game). However, Zonda’s transformed form features a large pink phallus jutting up from where Zonda’s crotch is located. All of other villains in the game are defined by animal-like traits and a distinctive color palette ala Mega Man Robot Masters, but not Zonda! Basically, Zonda sports what many consider the classic symbol of male sexuality in which most would call a color representing femininity (a.k.a pink). This depiction serves to reinforce that a damaging stereotype: those that are transgender are defined solely on their choice of genitalia.
If that wasn’t enough, just look at the dialogue the character speaks.
“Mmm, look at you. You’re all boy, aren’t you?”
This line objectifies the main character (and possible hints at a pedophile angle with the usage of the word “boy”).
“A plug for every socket, and a socket for every plug. "I should warn you - I’m carnal. I’m a carnivore.”
Biological sexual fixation followed by statements which suggest physical and sexual aggression.
“Right now, you’re a dangly little piece of meat. Taking you for a tug is going to be fun.”
Zonda finishes by threatening to rape Gunvolt, pretty much.
Somehow the ESRB thought this dialogue was appropriate in a game meant for ages 10 and up. It clearly isn’t. Also, the constant association of transgenderism with sexual assault feeds into an underlying societal perception that those that are trans are a threat and tolerance is equal to the sacrifice of male liberty.
What makes matter worse is that when the character of Zonda is slain. Not by Gunvolt, but by another character. As if Zonda is unworthy of facing our hero, that his life is worthless. Zonda’s killer uses the word “abomination” to describe Zonda. And Gunvolt arrives just in time to hear Zonda’s salacious death throes, “So hot… inside me… aaah!” “This pain… exquisite… nngh!!!” “Kill me… just like that… aaahhh…” To clarify even further, in case it wasn’t obvious already, Inti Creates made sure to add the line spoken by Gunvolt, “That’s no cry for help!”
On top of that, the game’s terminology used to reference the character consist of “bigender” and the pronouns “xe” and “xem”. In a nutshell, it means the game made an attempt at being politically correct, yet their portrayal of the transgender character Zonda is abysmal. It doesn’t matter about intent. Azure Striker Gunvolt, made by Inti Creates propagates negative stereotypes to those that play its game, whether through choosing to do so. Or due to utter ignorance.
About the non existent boss fight: Copen (the guy defeating Zonda) is the guy you fight in this stage as a twist, as in "you were expecting Zonda but surprise!" Plus him calling Zonda "an abomination" is not a referabce to xer gender identity. He calls all adepts abominations, including Gunvolt. While Zonda is a bad representation I don't think it was in malicious intent. All 7 Sumeragi adepts are insane in one way or another. Heck, Viper (wrath) accuses you of "stealing his girl" (Joule/ Lumen). That character is misoginistic, sure, but he's a villain. It makes sense to give villains negative character traits. The same goes for Zonda, xe's not a role model or a positive character by any standard. The question we must ask is "is Zonda's gender identity part of the 'negative traits' given to a villain". I would like to assume not, as the villains in Gunvolt tend to have neutral traits about them, like Stratos or Elise, but I can see why Zonda is a problematic character. Weird how the fandom loves the inclusion of "a bigender character with proper pronouns" wher xer stage is LITERALLY CALLED "SINNER'S ROW"
