@rujinupilled
I’ve seen a lot of bad takes in my years in fandom, but one of the worst has got to be that Jinu sacrificed himself for Rumi to manipulate her further and make her feel worse. Genuinely, do people who say this a) know what a character arc is or b) have actually watched the movie? If he wanted to make Rumi feel bad, he wouldn’t have been apologizing to her, ignoring the pain of being BURNED ALIVE, assuring her that she saved him, and giving her his soul. Instead, he’d be screaming in agony like Anakin Skywalker on Mustafar and accusing her of failing to save him.
Or, you know, he wouldn’t have jumped in front of a fire blast to begin with and would’ve just let her die.
I’m willing to entertain the idea that him dying for Rumi was an elaborate act of committing suicide and he was happy with his death because it meant no more suffering for himself, but saying that his death was him actively trying to make Rumi feel awful? I don’t think we watched the same movie, and that take is just, quite frankly, beyond media illiterate.
Probably said this before at some point but I forever love to make the parallel that both of Rumi and Jinu’s goals that they were trying so hard to achieve would’ve ultimately ended in their detriment.
If the Golden Honmoon was ever achieved, it probably wouldn’t know the difference between demon and half-demon. It sees what it’s meant to banish and forces all of them below the Honmoon. Rumi could’ve ended up on the wrong side after spending her whole life building the very thing that sent her there. So much self-sacrifice, for a goal that damned her, and Rumi will only blame herself for not being human enough to be spared instead of realizing it never mattered in the first place. And a lone Hunter in the demon realm, right after the Honmoon is sealed? That’s, unfortunately, the perfect scapegoat. Even without Gwi-Ma ordering retribution, many demons would want it anyways.
On the flip side, if Jinu got what he wanted and lost such a core memory of himself? Forgetting his shame and god knows what else Gwi-Ma decided to wipe? Probably would have some pretty drastic changes in personality. How much would Gwi-Ma would take in response is another thing, because if he can remove memories, why not cause Jinu to forget the things that make him human? He asked for it, didn’t he? Why not take advantage of a newly mind wiped Jinu and mold him into someone loyal to him? Why not do whatever he wants? Jinu could be free of the shame that haunted him for centuries, but god knows what mistakes and vulnerabilities that would open him up to in return.
Two goals that could’ve (and probably even would’ve) gone very poorly for them but they were chasing anyways. And two goals, with each other’s influence, they learned to let go to embrace better things (change and acceptance; forgiveness and redemption).
Anyways. I’m so normal about them.

Imma be real they were so extra for singing Jinu's Lament / Hunter's Mantra. And waiting for the most dramatically opportune time to crash the party. Like Rumi ily but I swear to god everyone was about to walk into fire
Also not her keeping her demon eye out for a good 45 seconds while giving Gwi-ma the light of day when she could've reverted at any time. Just to bait and switch him. As with Jinu mocking him. Lmao Bonus:

A while ago, I made a post about how I think its cool that both Rumi and Jinu are string instrument players - another subtle parallel between the two of them.
But what's really fascinating about this is its another example of Rujinu following the old vs new concept as Rumi plays an acoustic guitar, a fairly modern instrument, whereas Jinu plays the bipa, a rather ancient instrument. Even something as simple as their instruments convey how they are canonically soulmates that transcend time itself.
It has been confirmed that that is the reason why their first proper conversation was held at Bukchon Hanok Village. Its literally a place where old meets new, perfect for a man who was born of the past and a woman born of the present.
Even these subtle details give more depth as to how well thought out Rujinu truly is. They were always meant to find each other.
Plus little tangent but I love the idea that they eventually teach each other their respective instruments post canon. This way, Rumi, someone born of the present will learn to play an instrument of the past and Jinu, a man born of the past will learn to play an instrument of the present. It will add that depth to them bonding about the era they reside in through music - something they are both very passionate about.
What do you think Jinu's role was in the 400 years that he has spend in the demon world? Considering his conversation with Gwi ma in the beginning and how the other demons immediately cleared a path for him, it gave the impression that he's always been more important and well respected than the other demons.
Do you think he build relationships to other demons in that time like to the rest of the Saja boys? How did his relationship to Gwi Ma impact his role in the demon world?
Love this question! I think there is so much room to explore this in canon actually! My hope is that if the Debut short film comes out, it not only shows the girls' debut, but Jinu's journey/story leading up to debuting the Saja Boys.
In canon, the actual movie script says that the demons felt a sense of "jealousy" for Jinu as he parted the crowd during his big introduction. For the demons to be jealous of Jinu implies many things. It implies that Jinu has something they want and do not have.
Jinu, even after having witnessed a public execution, feels confident enough in his standing to sing what is essentially a diss-track to his abuser. Gwi-Ma doesn't react harshly towards him, even after coming off of an anger-fueled tantrum. He threatens Jinu, but not in the same way he does the other demons. He speaks to Jinu like he's a peer in a lot of ways. Like they're on the same intellectual level. And although Jinu is still a slave to Gwi-Ma, there seems to be a strange sort of respect that Jinu has earned.
When Jinu pitches his plan, Gwi-Ma's uncertain of it at first. Mocking. A play on what Jinu had just done to him. It seems like passive aggressive jeering might be a common occurrence between them. But it doesn't take very much to convince Gwi-Ma that Jinu's plan is a good one. He passes off on it very quickly. Almost like he trusts Jinu above all others to get the job done.
"I taught you well, Jinu." Gwi-Ma said those words with pride. Not necessarily for Jinu himself, but pride for his success in molding Jinu into a worthy servant. I don't know if there is a hierarchy in the Demon World. But the fact that Jinu feels comfortable in bargaining for the erasure of his memories with Gwi-Ma tells me that Jinu might be held in higher regard than others in Gwi-Ma's eyes. I think that, if he were a lesser demon, Gwi-Ma would've just forced and threatened him to pull off his boyband stunt without promising him something in return.
Not until later on when Gwi-Ma's VERY angry with Jinu do we see that dynamic shift. He torments Jinu and threatens not only to rescind his deal, but make the voices worse. But even then, even while Gwi-Ma is torturing Jinu with his sins and telling him how awful he is, he doesn't yell. He doesn't call him an idiot. He doesn't call him weak or pathetic or useless like he does the other demons. Yes, he reminds Jinu that he is nothing more than a pawn. That he is a horrible, selfish person. All the things Jinu hates about himself. But it's clear that Gwi-Ma still needed Jinu. He didn't immediately kill him, even though he had every reason to after witnessing Jinu's honest encounter with a Hunter, their sworn enemy.
Whether Jinu held an official position of authority or not, it's clear the writers intended for us to believe his relationship with Gwi-Ma was a unique one. Jinu held an air of power, despite his powerless situation. There is definitely something more there.
『 Rujinu Flash Weekend 』 ➥ Holding Hands
Just Jinu being Rumi's number one fan 🙂↕️💜💙
I am sick and tired of all the people saying that Rumi and Jinu would never work as a couple in this lifetime, or that they are toxic for one another. The core of their relationship is how their own, personal insecurities enabled them to empathize with each other and help the other overcome their own insecurities. Rujinu is the utter embodiment of what a healthy relationship should look like.
Jinu is the first person to accept Rumi for her hybrid nature. The first person who Rumi can openly share and talk about her patterns with, because he’s the only person she’s ever known who understands that having the patterns isn’t evil or shameful. Even Mira and Zoey react negatively at first when the truth is revealed to them.
Jinu has been haunted by the guilt of abandoning his family for 400 years, with Gwi-Ma torment reminding him daily. Rumi is the first person who sees Jinu for who he is, and is able to remind him that he is more than his mistakes, breaking the self deprecating spiral that he’s been stuck in for centuries.
Jinu betrayed Rumi because he was under the direct control of Gwi-Ma, who used psychological torture to force him to set Rumi up and tear Huntrix apart. That wasn’t an instance of “Jinu’s personal struggles bringing Rumi down with him.” After that instance, Rumi and Jinu lose all hope for each other and themselves. But after Rumi confronts Celine, and comes to the realization that all of her teachings were wrong, that the system itself was complete flawed, Rumi regains hope to fix the honmoon and accepts herself as she is. Something she never would have been able to do without Jinu’s unconditional love and support.
In seeing Rumi standing there, mentally exhausted, yet confident and hopeful, Jinu regains hope for himself and is able to move past his guilt, sacrificing himself to save Rumi and creating a new honmoon that seals Gwi-Ma away for good.
People who say that Rumi are toxic for one another misunderstand the connection that they formed between them and the positive impact that their relationship had on one another. Rumi and Jinu didn’t just improve each other’s lives. They helped the other become a better person for good.

"Rumi — this is way too much for two people. This is crazy."
"You said you're hungry enough to eat a horse, right? When's the last time you got to enjoy good food like this anyway? Eat!"
Not long after Jinu returns from the dead, he finds himself a.) naked as the day he was born and b.) starving for human food. Rumi helps him out with both problems. Eventually, both end up scaring the other patrons with their appetites.

The outfits are based off a drawing by Ami Thompson. I thought it'd be funny if Rumi threw her biggest cardigan and loosest sweats at him until they could get him more fitting clothing. 😂
