I started this post by selecting some Lo Fi - hand made promotional materials fir Half-Cocked. We hustled hard and the internet didn’t really have impact back then. If you didn’t make flyers you didn’t reach anyone. Then I saw @ron_liberti making t-shirts a couple of years ago for our Miami event. He taught @fionagalinsky the basics and she caught the bug. I then realized that this is a great opportunity to wish her a happy birthday. Later, she got more instruction from @murdermart and @theoldgoldtooth - She recreated the sleepyhead one of mine she’s wearing here and many other cool ones (mostly stuff related to our projects) -This is a good opportunity for me to point out how proud I am of her for all that she has accomplished in the last year. Around this time one year ago she dropped out of college because she knew it wasn’t the right path at the moment. A few weeks later she was helping us produce Bananaland. Then she travelled to Europe, came back and started to do more screen printing, did more traveling, worked some jobs (at a climbing gym, the cradle, etc), made an amazing video for @mannequinpussy - developed her own style with photography (that’s her @hammeredhulls shot) applied for school in Berlin, and is gearing up for a trip across the country. She has worked really hard to find a more solid footing on this earth as an artist, human, and daughter. The last few years have been hard on all of us, but especially young people. She’s on a great path and I could not be happier for her. She and a friend are headed west on a Southern route. She’s a great guest- so let her know if you have a floor, couch or bed and a desire to make them a meal. She travelled Europe staying with our friends and loved it and I got no complaints;) she both loved and hates that we are so similar. She’s a chip off the old blockhead; stubborn, creative, a little wild, and on a journey to document her journey. Like me at her age, she’s a little unsure of herself, but I’m doing what I can to help her avoid some of my mistakes. She’s also a momma’s girl. Arthur Wood on the roof of the Broken Angel in Brooklyn in 2007. I spent several years documenting Arthur’s efforts to save his iconic building from being torn down by the city for building code violations. He bought it from the city for 2000 dollars in the early 80’s when the area was filled with vacant buildings and he made it into a sculpture. It was a fantastic iconic structure. At some point Arthur decided he wanted someone else to make a documentary. So, I had to put it on hold. Id still like to finish it someday. Throwback to last fall when @coach_viro was still a @the_savpartyanimals coach. Yesterday was a long shoot day at the season home opener, starting with @gillum_66 and Viro getting ready. We are witnessing history up close, so it’s hard to get a handle on what to shoot. A few weeks ago I shot a practice where @dr_meadows @_ryancox6 @bill_leroy and @j_olson2 were working on trick catches - now they are doing them in games. Last weekend DR did a back flip catch that has 560k LIKES!! on the ESPN share of it. I asked him about that and he said he was going to do a cartwheel catch and then backflip last night- then he did it in game. @jakeskole15 casually caught a deep fly behind his back and @thereal_smoothieking interrupted his outfield ping pong game with @reece_hampton (he didn’t have a glove so he didn’t count as a player) to make a wild sliding catch. By the end of the tour it will be unremarkable, and even expected. I’m old enough to remember when dunks were a surprise in basketball. We are also witnessing the game evolve and find itself. A few weeks ago we shot a meeting where the coaches and Jesse came up with the idea of the showdown chase. In Bananaball 4 balls leads to a sprint rather than a walk. It’s also a two hour time limit. If the game reaches two hours OR is tied at 9 innings it goes to showdowns. Batter vs pitcher and one fielder. Instead of a walk being a sprint to reach as many bases as possible before every player touches the ball; since it’s pitcher and catcher vs batter- in a showdown on ball 4 the batter takes off and the pitcher races to the first base line to meet the catcher for a handoff and chases down the batter. When they hit third base they can throw to the catcher. Last night the pitcher caught up. It was riveting. The third showdown was chaotic for several reasons. As Jesse said afterwards, they’ve played less than 40 games of bananaball - they will play almost 100 this year and it will be wild to see the game find itself - and the team behind the game continue to grow and evolve as well. Everyone knows they are a part of something special- yet there’s a lot of hard, often mundane, work and process to go through. Codeine live in Cambridge 1990. Two images together. This was the first time I heard or heard of them. We were in town prepping to move to Providence for the summer to start out band. It was a wild tumultuous time of transition. That was 33 years ago. I’m moving through the transition of my kids being grown; it’s a bigger, longer, and somewhat less tumultuous transition. Hindsight gives us perspective but not always ease. Revisiting all this older work is a part of that transition. @fionagalinsky brought us to the flea market at the state fair where Holly found this labradorite that glowed. She’s wearing a Lapis ring that I think she got with Fiona in Amsterdam, knowing that this was a stone that dazzled my mother. As she showed me this stone I remembered that I had made a video for a @chuckjohnsonmusic song called labradorite eye. When Holly got to Amsterdam on that trip she texted me a i tire of a blue heron - without realizing it was kind of a spirit bird fir my mom. Sometimes I feel a bit like a crazy hippy when I make so many quasi spiritual connections- but fuck it - I get a lot of pleasure from making these wonderous connections. I know that my feed is a bit of a schizophrenic mess- old rock scene, malls, personal, doggo, and bananas. It’s gonna get more bananas again as we ramp up work on another bananas project. What a wild ride it’s been over the last year- and it’s just getting wilder. We all feel very blessed to be along for the ride. While it’s a business and a sport it’s also a culture of creativity and mutual support. In late 2006, when Suki and I had two daughters I was reminded that I had been a sperm donor. That was 15 years earlier which felt like a lifetime. I did it because I was convinced that I was doing a mitzvah for families in need- and yes, it was also 50 bucks when my rent was 125. I also didn’t have any sense that my genes would mean anything in terms of connection. I had seen a lot of stories of people searching for a birth mother- but never the father. When I looked into it I found that a lot of donor conceived kids were upset about being disconnected. I wrote an op-ed questioning the ethics of anonymous donation and connected with a donor conceived woman and a friend who was adopted. I started to shoot with them in 2007. I also searched for my donor number and tried to make myself available. No one found me. Later I added two more stories- a friend who was adopted who struggled in a custody fight for her child - where the adoptive mother tried to get control of her child- and two male friends who got married and had twins via a surrogate. I never had the resources to focus on editing, but I kept shooting. 4 years ago my daughter Holly connected with my cousin on ancestry. We met in NY and I shot on my phone as we saw each other for the first time. Then I put the camera away. I haven’t taken it back out except for when Holly met her sisters that fall. It’s felt way too important to prioritize connection and presence than shooting. While we have all gotten together a number of times, Holly visited us, with her husband Tim, for the first time at our home this weekend. It was so nice to have them here, and hard to let them go. On the drive to the airport at 5:30 am we talked a little bit about how we might conceptualize jump staring the project. I think about it a lot. Everyone in it is an artist so I want to prioritize having everyone be the main driver of their own story - yet I want it to hold together. Maybe it’s a series, and maybe it’s a feature. What we talked about this morning is that are ready to work on it. We went to a bar one night and we ran into @danielchavis who grabbed both our noses and laughed. I’m pretty sure this was at an Unrest show at Maxwells. There’s another shot where I lifted up the camera and got a wide picture of the crowd. I recognize 50 percent of the people and by posting it identified almost everyone. It was a packed show and a pretty interconnected community. I was inspired to document the scene I was a part of by people who came before me- people I didn’t know then/ but now do - like @godlis @punkturns30 @patblashill @maciocephotography @glenefriedman @cynthi4connolly @jimsaah @instapatgraham @gailwithacamera and others who documented their scenes. I saw some work in fanzines like @mike.mcgonigal Chemical Imbalance - he ran a Georgia Hubley photo of mine that got me going. He’s front and center in the other image - just behind @hifivicky and Josh. I saw other work in books which gave me an understanding of how important it was to stop time with the camera. This was pre internet and besides fanzines and record covers the images didn’t get seen. Sometimes I’d bring them in a backpack to show people or share them with bands and label people. That’s how they got used as promo photos or on records. It gave my life a lot more meaning to be a part of something that was so meaningful to me. I wasn’t trying to make it a career. I was anti career. If I did it for money it felt kind of corrupt to me. I still feel that way in some sense. I’ve been shooting a lot for other people and trying to help them make their films because they don’t have as many resources as they need. I have most of the resources that I need so it gives my life more meaning. Sometimes, when the work goes slowly it can be hard to keep it up. However I’ve learned to be patient. A film we made 30 years ago is playing tonight. It means a lot more now than it did then.
