“you’ve got what it takes, but it’ll take everything you’ve got”
a good morning making my heart feel full
Tuning up…
how to fall back in love with your first love: go slow, get to know each other again without keeping time, try new routes, but don’t be afraid to revisit old ones - they’re comfortable. go unreasonably fast, go all the way, run at sunset, change the scenery, stop to pet dogs, stop to take photos of the beautiful earth, smile at the people you pass, run in the shoes you always swore you’d never wear, run once a week and don’t even think about lacing up the other six days, swear you’re done with this sport but catch yourself smiling as you run up your least favorite hill because even though it doesn’t define you anymore, it doesn’t measure you, it can’t break you - you’re still the most You you’ll ever be when you’re running.
things i wish i knew when i started running
1. this sport breaks your heart. over and over and over again.
2. your worth is not in how many miles you run, how fast you race, what place you finish.
3. when a dream starts to feel like a prison sentence, it is okay if you leave it.
4. step back. breathe. LITERALLY stop to smell flowers, stare at the sunrise, or talk to the squirrel gathering nuts. look around you. take the moment in. you are alive. remember that. thirty seconds of appreciation will never be a mistake.
5. you can’t weigh 100 pounds and be a size 00 forever. muscle mass is bad ass.
6. but you will still never have boobs. genetics really did a number on you.
7. you will save all of your race bibs and all of your “good luck, run fast” notes. these will be stored in a box shoved under your bed. you will come home from college, find it, and cry. do not let the bitterness overwhelm the good memories. there are so many good memories. remember those instead.
8. you will outrun your love for running. it will take you two years to admit this aloud.
9. always stop if you see a dog during your run. always.
10. you may never become the runner you thought you would. but you will become an incredible woman who knows of sacrifice and strength, commitment and perseverance. you will become a woman so many people are proud of, even when you can’t be. you will stand on the same legs that met the finish line muddy, sweaty, or bloody hundreds of times before. you will breathe with the same lungs you swore were collapsing during your conference meet of your sophomore year. when reunited on winter break, you will hug your teammates with the same arms that held them during pre-race huddles and post-race breakdowns. you will be different, but beautiful. my god, you will be beautiful. you will be who you always needed to become.
Senior Year
It’s wild to me how i started this blog back in high school, and now I’m in my final year of competitive running. I’ve been reminiscing a lot about my running career and found my way back here. It’s so neat to read all of my logs from lil ‘ol high school me. To see the growth in me as a person. Blogging is so neat, a little time capsule back to the past. This is primarily for me, but it’s also cool to have an audience that can look back on the journey of a random persons life as well.
Last year of collegiate running. Senior year comes with a lot of lasts. Last first day of practice. Last first meet of the season. I ran my last 5k ever a few weeks ago. My final conference cross country meet is coming up soon. It’s weird. You never feel quite ready for things to come to an end. But it happens anyway.
This last cross country season has been crazy. Crazy in a good way. I’ve been running alright personally. I had a slow start but I’m starting to find my groove. The cross team as a whole is insane. I don’t want to jinx anything, but our prospects of qualifying for NCAA’s as a team is looking extremely promising. Which is exciting. It’s just tough because it’s so hard to do. We had a good shot my freshman year, but things started to fall apart as the season wore on. Another really good shot my sophomore year, but we fell short. Last year was a rebuilding year, and now here we are. We have two seniors who are our low sticks, a really fast freshman who’s coming in clutch, a junior who’s stepping up and really finding her stride, and a sophomore finding her space too.
Right now I’m on the bubble as #7/#8. It’s a tough spot to be in. Because I’m competitive and I want to be #7 and travel with the team. #8 serves as alternate. It’s also hard because you’re competing against your teammates to an extent for the spot. And the girls who I’m up against are so so sweet. I’m competitive though. We’ll see.
Looking forward to seeing where this season goes, what happens...and even more pumped for track. That’s not yet though.
It was so tough to find my login info, I haven’t used this in so long. I’ll update later on in the season. Definitely want to have this documented somewhere.
Ran 7 miles on my all time favorite trail this morning for the first time in years and it was so good for the soul.
It feels good(ish) to be back 💀
Monday included buying a car, having a magical run, and chipotle.
post run appreciation of where we live
Hands down favorite running spot
nothing worth having comes easy. remember that.
much needed miles this afternoon. i’m so grateful for how much peace running brings me.
