Is deity work good for beginners?
I personally didn't start working with deities until about a year ago (so about 6-7 years into my practice). There are some things to consider before beginning work with any deity or spirit.
Deity work opens you up to potentially negative spirits
It is a lifelong commitment
You have to earn the right to work with them
Spiritually draining
Offerings can be extreme
Constant upkeep and time commitment
Imposter and/or trickster spirits
Note that I'm talking about working with deities here, not worshipping or leaving offerings for them. Anyone can leave an offering for any deity, but if you expect a response, you need to be prepared.
With all due respect, I started working with deities about 21 years ago, about 5 minutes after I finished my first book on witchcraft and I
Never had any problems with negative spirits relating with deity work
Worked with many different deities. Did a very intense, week-long devotion ritual to a deity that is now no longer in my life. People change, their beliefs, values, needs, and views on the world also change. It doesn't NEED to be a lifelong commitment if you don't want it to be.
No one needs to earn anything in order to work with deities, and to be honest, it sounds rather sketchy
All magical work CAN BE spiritually draining, which is why grounding and eating/drinking something afterwards is advised. In my experience, however, deity work is recharging. I often feel better and energized after diety work.
How are offerings exteme?
Like with anything in your life, you give what you can. And the amount of energy you put into it, is what you get out of it. And by that I don't mean that if you're tired, stressed, fatigued, out of spoons, etc, that you need to give huge amounts of energy or time or commitment. You give what you can, and if that is five minutes a day, that's fine. If that's an afternoon once a month, that's fine. The Gods wouldn't want you to burn yourself out or hurt yourself. Because they care.
Never had the experience with trickster spirits or imposters myself, but I know people who had. There are magical workings you can do to prevent it. But in general, if you keep your head about you and stay grounded deity work shouldn't be any more dangerous than any other magical work.
Sure, you should prepare for deity work, make sure you've done some actual research and that you approach any deity with respect. But it isn't inherently dangerous or exhausting or a huge commitment. It is whatever you make of it.
Also with all due respect, I had deities in my life even before I started practicing witchcraft. I was a Pagan before I was a witch, more than 10 years ago.
I've never had a problem with negative spirits/malevolent entities. I've never invited any into my life or given any permission to enter my space either. And if I didn't trust my deities to protect me, I wouldn't be worshipping them in the first place.
It is NOT a lifelong commitment. There is no contract, no binding, nothing to keep you should you wish to walk away. You can say "no" to deities. You can turn down deities. You can sever relationships with deities. Oaths to deities are completely optional and not at all a requirement, even for dedicated worshippers and devotees.
Extravagant offerings have never been a necessity. In ancient times, people gave what they could. Water, oil, salt, grains, fruits, flowers, incenses... all are appropriate and historically attested offerings.
Anything, spiritual or not, can be as draining, as time committing, and as constantly upkeeping as you make it to be.
I've never had to worry about trickster spirits. Even if they do exist, they've never been a problem for me. Pretending to be/putting yourself on the same level as a god is hubris, and that is one thing the gods of my religion will not tolerate; not from humans, and I don't see spirits being any different in this matter.
Children worked with deities in ancient times. Most of the people in ancient times who followed these ancient religions and worshipped these ancient deities weren't witches. There is no right of passage, or any "right" that one has to earn in order to start praying, giving offerings, observing sacred days, or celebrating festivals. The gods are there to be worshipped. Those who worshipped them thousands of years ago did so because that was their living tradition. They worshipped their gods because that was simply what they did. Anyone who wants to can work with deities, witch or not, experience or no. Out of respect for the religions, cultures, worshippers, and the deities themselves, you definitely should research and learn as much as you can. But if you want to start, you can just start.
Autumnal
sorry im late, i started thinking about history and the bittersweet beauty of the fact that people from thousands of years ago are so similar to people today and i had to lie down on the floor for a while
i hate when people make fun of the "do yoga go for a jog drink water eat healthy get 8 hours of sleep" advice for mental health. theyre like OH THANKS IM CURED when the sentiment is not a CURE but an IMPROVEMENT i promise you if someone drags you out of your bed and forces you to go for a mile walk you will ultimately feel better than if you stayed in your depression hole of a room covered in food containers and clothes on the floor for another 72 hours i PROMISE U. its not a cure but it is a step in the right direction w clinically proven benefits i say this as someone diagnosed w major depressive disorder stop being so cynical u have to actively engage w trying to get better
the gods have had mentally ill worshippers for as long as theyâve had worshippers.
the gods have had chronically ill worshippers for as long as theyâve had worshippers.
the gods have had neurodivergent worshippers for as long as theyâve had worshippers.
they wonât be offended or think less of you just because your devotion looks different to able-bodied neurotypical devotion. they understand.

Antitheists really think theyre smart being like "your religion isnt real actually:) " to Natives thinking its fine and totally not racist like Christians have been telling us our religions arent real for centuries you aint special
Antitheists & Atheists who go around telling poc their ethnic religions aren't real & that we're foolish for believing in them are the exact same as Christians who told us that & used it as an excuse to colonize us
Honestly, even if you dont necessarily believe in spirituality or anything at all, there is still power in traditional spirituality. In traditional Cree teachings, when you dance, pray, and make decisions, you do it with the next 7 generations in mind. When our ancestors danced and prayed they did it with all of us in mind, with love in their hearts for those who would come next, and even if you don't believe those prayers have any real world effects, knowing that seven generations of your ancestors sang and danced with you in their hearts? Real, undoubtedly real. That care for our descendants extended beyond prayer too, the treaties were specifically intended by our ancestors to never expire, and thats intentional. Our leaders made their decisions with the next 7 generations in mind. Whether or not you believe in spirituality or our traditional teachings, they are powerful.
Flipping everyone the same finger regardless of race is rude and dickish, but not racist. If an unpleasant person wakes up one day and selects a person based on something other than race and decides to mistreat them, itâs okay to be mad at the unpleasant person, or even hate them in some contexts, but itâs unfair to call them racist when they happen by chance to choose a victim who is of a marginalized race. Similarly, it would be stupid to call someone racially progressive for pointlessly abusing someone from a privileged race.
