unironically, despite being a meme song, “Mad World“ captures the essence of The Underland Chronicles so accurately it’s almost painful. look at the lyrics:
All around me are familiar faces / Worn out places, worn out faces
- in the Underland, Gregor is surrounded by people he knows and loves, but the war is raging around them. none of them are safe.
Bright and early for the daily races / Going nowhere, going nowhere
- Gregor used to be a track runner. he trained for races. now he trains for war.
Their tears are filling up their glasses / No expression, no expression
- the war is devastating on everyone. Gregor chooses to cope with it by picturing the still, emotionless knight statue, and mimicking its stony expression.
Hide my head, I want to drown my sorrow / No tomorrow, no tomorrow
- Gregor is traumatized by the war, all the deaths he witnessed, and he sinks into depression. he has no idea how he can go on in the Overland, his own world, where he has to hide what had happened to him.
Children waiting for the day they feel good / Happy birthday, happy birthday / Made to feel the way that every child should / Sit and listen, sit and listen
- children in the Underland are taught to fight from a very young age because of the constant threat of war, unlike in Gregor’s world where children don’t go to school to learn how to kill. Hazard’s birthday party, the most “normal” experience a child could have in the Underland, was the last time all the characters were truly happy before the war started.
Went to school and I was very nervous / No one knew me, no one knew me
- Gregor going to school after Code of Claw. he is traumatized and depressed. he doesn’t feel like anyone would understand. he doesn’t feel like he belongs there anymore, not just at school, but in the Overland.
Hello teacher, tell me what’s my lesson / Look right through me, look right through me
- lessons in school seem like nothing to him now. how can he care about math and english when people are dying all over the world? the most important teacher figure in Gregor’s life would always be Ripred, who taught him how to fight with echolocation, who always knew what he was thinking.
And I find it kinda funny, I find it kinda sad / The dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had
- the nightmares of falling that plagued Gregor for his whole life. those nightmares are far better than dreaming of war or his friends dying.
I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take / When people run in circles it’s a very very
- Gregor realizing Luxa and Ripred would have been perfectly fine with going back to war despite everyone they’ve lost, despite all the deaths and destruction. it’s an endless cycle of hatred and hurt, fighting and killing, and it doesn’t just happen in the Underland. it’s happening here, too, in the Overland, people suffering, starving, fleeing, killing one another as they waged their wars–
