John Keats, from a letter to Fanny Brawne
Anna Karina has been referred to as “a dirty version Audrey Hepburn,” a description I consider to be delightfully apt. After all, both Anna and Audrey were cinema stars of the doe-eyed, gamine variety, but while most of Audrey’s characters at least aspired to be society girl-types with slim cigarette holders and lovely couture frocks, the majority of Anna’s characters were nearly always slumming it — making ends meet by working as striptease artists, or living their lives on the run from strange Algerian gunmen. And yet, somehow, even with the tousled hair and the cheap cigarettes, Anna always managed to look every bit as dazzling as Audrey, if not more so, simply by virtue of the fact that she knew how to match a gun with a pleated skirt and would probably recite Marx with superb accuracy if you asked nicely and offered her a light. - Rachel Baron Singer

The soul is a terrible reality. It can be bought, and sold, and bartered away. It can be poisoned, or made perfect.

“How dismal it is to have no one to go to in the morning to share one's griefs and joys; how hateful when something weighs on you and there's nowhere to lay it down. You know to what I refer. I often tell to my pianoforte what I want to tell to you.” —Frédéric Chopin

“They played at hearts as other children might play at ball; only, as it was really their two hearts that they flung to and fro, they had to be very, very handy to catch them, each time, without hurting them.” —Gaston Leroux
