The Guitarist, oil on canvas (c. 1757) Jean-Baptiste Greuze (French, 1725–1805) presents a young fowler tuning his guitar, a scene rich with 18th-century romantic double meanings. In the era's visual language, a bird hunter was a well-understood symbol of a smooth seducer, a theme quietly reinforced by the hunting gear in the background.

By showing him carefully tuning his instrument, Greuze cleverly captures the deliberate preparation for a new romantic pursuit. The work exemplifies the transition from playful Rococo to a more serious genre style that utilized art for ethical instruction.
