Thad was... still a little nervous, ok? Russell was big and huge and unpredictable and, as far as he was concerned, pretty focused on violence alone. Every instance he had ever seen him at least was violence-focused.
He had his arms full of different levels of english primers, notebooks, and some chapter books he had pilfered from his childhood stash boxed up in the garage, not sure what he would actually need, and was standing stiff-backed and nervous outside the library waiting for Mari to show up with the guy. @bullworthsdeliverygirl @russ-king (you two decide the order this goes in 1-2-3 style lmao)
“HII THAD” Mari walked up holding 2 boxes of cookies.
“Russell will be here soon he had some business to take care of with the shop guy”
Russell did pull up eventually, in his usual get up. That was to say: a stained white shirt, stained black pants, and surprisingly clean shoes. He'd had to stay behind and talk to Neil...for some reason. He couldn't remember.
He'd walked from the shop, bringing nothing, hands in his pockets. It wasn't hard to see him, and he saw Thad and Mari waiting. Mari had a package, but he couldn't remember what they were for.
"Russell has arrived!" He shouted. "Alone!"
Thad couldn't help but lightly flinch at the volume of his voice, his face deeply skeptical. He had booked one of the 'quiet study rooms' on the second floor but he wasn't sure if the soundproofing was Russell proof.
"Mari are we sure he can even be in the library..." he muttered, then louder so Russell could hear, added "Good, alone is good. Can we try quiet, also?"
I’m sure it will be fine. Russell can be quiet right Russell?
"I’m sure it will be fine. Russell can be quiet right Russell?" Russell's lips were twisted in concentration as he considered what Mari was saying. Could he be quiet? Of course he could, under certain circumstances. Namely:
"I can if I also sound threatening," Russell lowered his voice, and accordingly, sounded more threatening. "Russell knows that threats are more scary if they're quiet." He didn't bother asking if the volume was okay, because he was trying to be as quiet as he could be. "Can you still hear Russell?"
Thad looked... dubious, but it was better than him shouting, at least. "Yeah, I can still hear you. That's... good enough. Don't touch anything on the shelves, just follow me and we'll set up in the study room. Did either of you bring a notebook or something?" He asked, trying not to seem condescending and failing a little bit.
“I brought cookies and a pen.”
Mari stands there smiling not noticing the tone of Thad’s voice
Russell stares hard at both Thad and Mari, his face screwed up in what was either confusion and irritation. In hindsight, it may have slipped his mind.
"Uh...Did either of you tell Russell?!" His voice suddenly rose, not noticing or caring who heard him.
"Is it not implied to bring study materials when you're studying?" Thad asked, then remembered it was Russell he was dealing with, pushing his glasses up and sighing as he led them inside.
"I suppose you can borrow mine, as long as you don't break my pencils. I always have extra notebooks in case one gets stolen."
Mari has a confused look on her face as she walks inside.
“You need notebooks to study? I thought you just used them for keeping important information.”
Mari takes out one of the cookies and starts eating it holding the boxes out for Russell and Thad.
Russell takes a look at the cookies, and takes 2 of each kind because both kinds are good. He keeps pace with his two study buddies.
For the tall redhead, trying to absorb information the way most people did was impossible for him, as any time he learned old information, the new information got jumbled or forgotten, or there were holes.
Russell did in fact know proper grammar, theoretically. But too many rules, and those rules were broken too often. Third person was simply easier.
Thad took a chocolate chip cookie, looking at Mari with a half exhausted expression. "Writing down important information is what studying is, Mari. What do you normally do?"
He shook hos head. "No, actually, not important. What matters now is I know all the best study methods." He took a spot at the head of the little particleboard conference table in the study room, stack of books on one side, sliding a notebook to Russell and a notebook to Mari. He took a bite of the cookie. "Alright, now we have to decide where to start. You're on different levels so who wants to go first?"
Mari raises her hand and yells out “me.” As soon as Thad finishes his question
Embarrassed about the volume of her voice she slaps her hands over her mouth and mumbles out a muffled “sorry”
"Russell doesn't like school," Russell agreed, because he didn't. Leaving class was easier. "Russell will watch." He hadn't even turned around, just kept walking.
Thad took a deep breath, centered himself, consciously made the choice to not choose violence, and smiled at Mari. "We'll start with you. Russell, you can sit down and be quiet, if you want to try and read any of the books I brought you can." Thad started where Mari said she was grade-wise, which was unfortunately mostly reading comprehension and essay writing skills. Russell would be figuratively much easier because it was all grammar and vocabulary and sentence rules, it was harder to train someone the true meaning of a book in one afternoon. He showed her how to take notes, a little impatient but doing his best. Beatrice really was much better at showing people how to do things, maybe Melvin or Bucky, he was easily frustrated when people didn't just 'get it' the way he did.
Mari told Thad where she was struggling in English and watched him rub his hands over his face while sighing. While Thad started explaining how to take notes and paying attention in class, Mari pretended to listen and absorb the information he was giving her.
From time to time she would ask exceedingly dumb questions just to see his reaction and spent most of the time just staring at Thad’s face and eating cookies. When Thad was finished tutoring her she thanked him knowing in the back of her head she didn’t retain any of the information he told her.
