Nandemonaiya

Gon looked genuinely confused. “Do I know you?” he asked. Killua felt his heart shatter, fragments of it slicing at every organ in his body and he scolded himself internally because what did he actually expect?

“Um…” he began, wanting to run and run and run until he could disappear entirely from existence. The ferry gave a warning call, signalling that it would be leaving soon. “I- er… I’m sorry. I have to go…” Killua spun around on his heel and walked toward the boat, only to freeze in place when a warm hand grasped his wrist.

“Wait,” Gon said in a tone so soft that Killua had to stare at his lips to understand what he was saying. “What is your name?”

Without thinking, Killua reached toward his wrist where Gon’s dark fingers were holding him, waiting. Killua’s fingers missed Gon’s, reaching instead for the bracelet Alluka had given him. He loosened the knot and slipped it down his hand, letting it slide over Gon’s hand as his wrist was released. “My name,” he said in a voice he didn’t recognize, “is Killua.”

This is the second piece for @cafeaulater‘s Nandemonaiya and the last piece for the @hxhbb2021!

Working on all of these in the span of 1.5 - 2 weeks was very challenging but also extremely satisfying. I tried many different techniques and really worked on backgrounds and lighting, as I always viewed my art as being kind of flat and not having a lot of dimension, so this was a great exercise in creativity and improvement on my weaknesses.

Overall, I was really glad to be a part of this event and I can’t wait to see all of the other submissions in the days to come!

Nandemonaiya

Sometimes, Gon would spend hours staring at the night sky, thinking about that void inside of him. He tried to memorize its shape, to put some tangible understanding to it. Some nights, it was easy. It was as though he could feel each edge of it. As though he could make out the exact shape and taste and smell. The stars would have answers on those nights. Most nights, however, it remained an uncertainty. At those times, he would almost write it off as something entirely unimportant. A distraction, maybe. Or a figment of his imagination, birthed from a deep desire for adventure and the unknown.

But even then, the feeling would persist, making his mind trace its maybe-shape in the stars. A new constellation, like something out of a dream - nothing more or less than a breathtaking view.

Here is the first of another two pieces for the other fic I had for the @hxhbb2021, @cafeaulater‘s Nandemonaiya, which was was a great take on Your Name. I loved this opening scene where Gon’s looking up in the sky and knew immediately that I wanted the night sky to be the focal point of the art.

Conventional Wisdom

“If you want to show me. It’s okay if you don’t.”

“I do.” Gon let the glamour dissipate.

Killua analysed his face. “Horns. Love them, they suit you.” He nodded his head. “But you look mostly the same, so you have small horns and a tail.”

“Yeah.” Gon moved the tail into view.

“It’s got a tuft at the end.” Killua yelled, excited. “So adorable.”

“Seriously?”

“Yes!” Killua looked enchanted. “But this proves that you can’t be a dangerous creature. No dangerous creature has a tail with a tuft. I can’t believe you don’t know this popular biological fact.” He grinned at Gon.

So, I didn’t realize this until after I had already started painting the background but in the fic, Gon was supposed to be sitting on the couch, which my mind totally glossed over (in my head, he was still standing in front of the door). After a mini-mental breakdown, I decided just to finish the piece because I had already put in a few hours and I really liked the final product so just imagine that he’s sitting in a couch in front of Killua. T-T

Conventional Wisdom

‘Aren’t you afraid I’m going to faint?’ The guy teased but hooked arms with Gon to give him support.

‘We’ve been putting proper food into you since yesterday, you should be fine.’

Gon didn’t really need any help at this point but he was getting so much good energy from them. They were all in excellent moods, apparently. It felt reckless to pass it up and this week he’d passed his allowed recklessness threshold for at least a year.

‘Caffeine and sugar’ll do this to you, one day you’ll pass out on the street, brother.’ The scolding continued as they walked.

‘Yes, yes.’ He said out loud and then whispered to Gon. ‘You’re a godsend, thank you for taking some of the righteous ire off my shoulders.’

‘But now you have to shoulder my weight.’

‘And yet it feels like nothing compared to my sister’s judgement.’

Here’s the first of my two pieces for Conventional Wisdom by @hxhhasmysoul for the @hxhbb2021! It was a lovely fic with great world-building that I can definitely see being expanded on. If you get a chance, make sure to check it out!

It had been months since I painted anything before jumping into this piece so it was a lot of trial and error, so I was really glad that I decided to do staged mock-ups of the piece. I would draw the sketch for the characters, scan it, then draw the background, scan it, superimpose the characters, print that out, trace it on watercolor paper, then paint. I also printed out small copies of the piece to figure out shading/lighting/etc. All of this planning actually made the whole process go much more smoothly, and I basically did this process for the rest of the pieces I did for this event.
