The Grapes of Wrath was written because Steinbeck stole the notes of a hardworking Dust Bowl-era journalist named Sanora Babb, who was trying to write her own book. When she finally had a chance to pitch it, she found that the market was overpowered by a successful book—based entirely on her notes. When Steinbeck saw the things in person that he later wrote about, he couldn’t stand to look at it for more than a day. Babb spent much of her career working with and chronicling impoverished farmers. Her book wasn’t published until the year before she died. In 2004. She would be a household name if not for the theft.

Steinbeck based his book on reports made by Sanora Babb (leaked to him by her boss, Tom Collins, to whom Grapes of Wrath is dedicated). Sanora Babb was planning to write her own book, but Steinbeck published before she did. Babb was told that the market could not bear another on the same subject. Her book, ‘Whose Names are Unknown’, was finally published in 2004. I haven’t read either book yet, but am now definitely going to be reading ‘Whose Names are Unknown’ soon. Babb’s novel is described as showing how by re-creating rudimentary democratic practices the refugees restructure their lives as a unified community, resisting violent discrimination. In ‘Whose Names are Unknown’, we hear the whole powerful story from the point of view of a woman who had actual experience with both the origin and the destination of the migrants.

Sanora Babb was a member of the US Communist Party in the 1930s and 40s, dropped out of the party due to the authoritarian structure and in-fighting.

The ideology that energizes and justifies this systematic degradation is a fascist ideology - the ideology of biological inferiority. Every act of terror or crime committed against women is justified as sexual necessity and/or dismissed as utterly unimportant. This extreme callousness passes as normalcy, so that when women, after years or decades or centuries of unspeakable abuse, do raise our voices in outrage at the crimes committed against us, we are accused of stupidity or lunacy, or are ignored as if we were flecks of dust instead of flesh and blood.

I’m trying to brainstorm ways of uniting radical feminists from tumblr in more ways than just terriblr, and as I’ve seen talk of forums and skype use already from some women, I’m wondering how feasible it’d be to get some kind of skype night/tinychat event/etc happening. It probably wouldn’t work if it was an all the time thing, but if it was a predecided date and time kind of live chat with other radfems, I wonder how appealing that would be?

condoms are free because 40 million people died during the aids crisis, and the vast majority of them were lgbt+, sex workers, or both. condoms are free because people dying of aids had to fight tooth and fucking nail so no one else needed to. condoms are free because people were having real actual die ins as form of protest. condoms are free because the government laughed while the lgbt community was dying, until they were forced to fight back. condoms are free because they save lives, everyday. they save rape victims lives, they save lgbt lives, they save sex workers lives, ect. saying condoms are only free for the benefit of men is transmisogynistic, classist, homophobic, and completely ignores the struggles of sex workers and rape victims. 

so the next time you bring up the fight for free menstruation products (and yes, you will have my support in that) leave free condoms out of it

No not the LGBT community. Men who have sex with men were dying, plus intravenous drug users and prostituted women. Lesbians have the lowest risk of contracting HIV.
