The Strokes frontman just said what most musicians are too scared to say out loud Julian Casablancas compared American Zionist victimhood rhetoric to appropriating the language of slavery, then joked his career was probably over, and kept talking anyway. Appearing on the YouTube series SubwayTakes, Casablancas said "American Zionists get the benefits of white privileged people but talk like they are Black people during slavery," he said. He then quipped "well, it's been nice having a career" before repeating the line to make clear he meant it. Casablancas pre-empted the predictable response by addressing October 7th directly. "Native American rebellions didn't mean it was ok to do what we did. Slave rebellions that were violent didn't mean that slavery is not bad." The argument is not complicated: the violence of the colonized does not retroactively justify the colonial project, and it never has.
