The obsession with babying white women when they mess up instead of holding them accountable needs to be studied. That lady said what she said and meant it. She wrote a whole essay dragging that man. If she didn’t want to come off racist, she had so much space in the essay to frame it better. But yes, us Black and Brown people should disregard our feelings because you all hate Nolan.
Her review actually annoys me so much. Himesh Patel is a phenomenal British actor of Indian descent. He’s not Black at all. Not only that, his role in the film is more boosted than it is in the books. He defies Odysseus many times. He’s never used as a comedic relief. Then a white lady comes and water down his role to being a Black Best Friend. Emily Wilson that’s just racism.
i love emily wilson. and while that wont change, the comments she made about all of the non white actors and actresses in the odyssey felt like such a low blow. say what you want about female characters not being fully fleshed out, but to write an entire paragraph about it, name them all, and refer to them as the black best friend, felt wildly racist. the black best friend is a trope to describe when black people are sidelined to prop up the main white guy. in no point did the characters of color do that more than the white characters, so it is not only unnecessary but highly bigoted to place a caricature on them and just role with it. one of those characters isnt even played by a black man, hes just simply not white. and that was enough ammunition for her to throw him to the side in her mind.
Also another thing, Emily Wilson’s supporters are quite annoying. If Black people are telling you that it’s racist to group every POC that plays a supporting role in a Black Best Friend then listen to them. Don’t argue them down.
Emily Wilson’s critique of The Odyssey fell flat for me. Attempting to say the Christopher Nolan reduced all the POC to the Black Best Friend trope is borderline racist especially when she named the POCs and they all weren’t Black and none of them provided comedic relief to a White actor.
Media literacy is dead.
Why are you all romanticising the relationship between Penelope and Odysseus?
It’s one thing if you haven’t read the books, but to watch the movie where the speech at the end talks about him damaging basic human decency and you all said “my man my man”?
Exploring faith/religion in dystopian media. The Walking Dead. Rick Grimes brags about faith whenever they escape a bad situation. If the faith gets the credit for the good, why doesn’t it also get the credit for putting you in the bad situation?

“It seems to me, my queen, that to go to such expense while your people still suffers might send a bitter taste in their mouth.” - Mysaria to Rhaenyra
The irony is that Mysaria, a former sex worker, often has a more sophisticated understanding of political power than many nobles and high powered officials that bred for their positions.
It’s a random Tuesday in the Seven Kingdoms, you just came back from the market after bartering for hours because you are poor, and your incestous monarch decide a dragon will burn you and your village to crisp.
In short, we must realise when someone has a fetish and forcing us all to witness it.
The random feet scene of Alicent. The mother-son kissing with Alicent and Aemond.
Someone is deeply perverted behind the scenes.
The Incest Is Not Needed - House of the Dragon - SPOILER
We can no longer use incest for shock value.
Aemond and Alicent. What exactly is the show trying to accomplish? It's as if the show runners are trying to weaponise shock value with the act of incest. Siblings being married, nieces and nephews, nieces and uncles, but this episode with mother and son incest just seems oddly placed. It doesn't really fit but seems more as a repetitive kink that a show-runner is trying to get off on. Incest is just too prevalent in this universe that another instance of it should carry narrative weight if it's going to exist at all. This isn't what GRRM did in ASOIAF.
I completely understand why he doesn't support this show.
I have this long post about incest in house of the dragons and then I saw the last episode and now the post about to get longer.
Kissing his mama? Excuse me?!
