“maybe the word suffering is a bit extreme but...i see people i went to school with who debuted around when i did, and the level they’re at compared to me? my career is certainly suffering,” she said, making it about herself instead of him. she didn’t want to make him upset, though she genuinely felt everyone at liberty except maybe burnout was fucked.

“Most likely. I’m pretty sure that the public expects a certain level of incompetence from them… so they’d really have to go the extra mile to leave any impression.”

“it makes the exceptions to the rule even more impressive, though,” she commented. “kiyoung and eli’s rise to fame, and jieun’s too to an extent, feel even more exciting because of that framing.”

he blushed, hiding deeper into her embrace. “stop it! not everything is a plot to get your naked, ahki,” he whined bashfully, glad she couldn’t see how red he was, because she’d surely tease him (though, his blush was reaching his neck, so she probably could see). “look at siren, then– i’m serious. they seem to be in a good place, now. their groups are starting to take off. you could join at the best moment.”

“i wish it were, though. you act like you don’t want that...” she whined teasingly. he was so pure and sweet. bothering him and getting him flustered was one of her favorite pastimes. “you’re the second person to suggest that,” she admitted, continuing to play with his hair as her tiny frame essentially cradled his much bigger one. “erii told me to check it out too. i’m not opposed to it at all.”

“you do,” erii agreed. “you know…you should see if your dad has any siren contacts and see if you can come here. i don’t know if midnite’s lineup is set in stone, but with sangah and yihwa, there’s surely going to be another group soon behind. and i think you’d be treated a lot better…”

“that’s something to consider...” ahki said, tapping her bottom lip. “is your group’s lineup set yet? if i was to come, i’d want to negotiate for a position there, i think. if you’re debuting soon, i think all my hype would die down before the next group was ready to debut.”

“True enough. Hopefully the public will have some mercy on them. You know… get them out of there before they embarrass themselves too badly.”

“unless they’re a complete asshole, the country will forget about them. i don’t mean that in a mean way, either. it’s a mercy.”

“you will. you’re a baby. not like me, but close– people don’t even debut by your age sometimes. you’ll be great someday,” songyi insisted.

“i’m not a baby but... i know. i’m still young. i have the chance at a second shot. i just need to escape so i can take it, instead of wasting in liberty’s dungeon.”

“you’re about to get out, ahki. being blacklisted once you’re free is so much worse,” he insisted, groaning into the crook of her neck. for someone who grounded him so much, she really did cause him a lot of anxiety sometimes. “oh, well… i was going to offer to help you, but i guess i don’t have to,” he said with a tiny smile. “that means you can pretty much go anywhere. have you thought about going to your dad’s company? ooh, or maybe siren– i bet your dad has connections there…”

she rolled her eyes, playing with his hair and holding him while he leaned into her. he was such a baby. it was why she loved him so much, but god...he was a baby. “you just want an excuse to be able to grind up close to me. and if you really want it, i’ll let you teach me whatever dance move you want,” she teased, fully knowing it was not what he meant at all. “i don’t want to go to dad’s company. they’re mostly actors and soloists. i want to be in a group-- i have the best chance of success that way. i hadn’t considered siren though....”

“I don’t want to agree that we’re suffering, but… them signing Blacklist doesn’t feel like a great sign for us,” Duckie said, then shrugging.

“i mean, you’re suffering from bad management-- is that not fair to say? i think all of us at liberty are.”

“good. they’ve really treated you terribly,” erii said with a sad little humm. “have you considered what you want your next step to be after that?”

“i want to try again. actually debut in a group that treats me right. i’m young enough to still get to do it,” ahki answered. “i deserve a do-over.”

ahki and erii had been friends for a long, long time at this point. they’d crossed paths back when erii was with radioactive, and ahki was still a trainee, and the rest was history. ahki was a close friend, and erii was one of the saddest of hearbeats. seeing her friend get next to nothing every song was heartbreaking. she knew how good ahki was, and how badly she wanted it. “how long until your contract is up?” she asked, pulling her hair back into a ponytail. “it can’t be much longer, can it?” @rvahki​

like, two years? i don’t know. dad’s taking them to court,” ahki answered, sighing. “he thinks his lawyers can get them to terminate my contract. something about a tiny clause they’ve been overlooking. i don’t care as long as i’m out soon.”

“Honestly, I can’t say I blame you. Go big somewhere else and make them regret it. If they even know how.”

“oh, i’m sure they’ll regret it soon enough. harmony’s dead, callback and reflexion both are suffering-- not to speak on your behalf, but it’s true...... journey’s winding down. my group is the worst. burnout is the only group with its’ head above water, and just barely... they’ll regret it when the go bankrupt.”

he groaned, pressing his forehead against hers. “stop even joking about that! it’s not funny. you’re going to get into even more trouble. you’re going to get blackballed,” he whined. “you’d do good anywhere. do you know how to dance, though? that’ll probably make it easier for you to get signed…”

“blacklisted? what could be worse than where i am right now?” she answered bluntly, pressing her lips to his. “um, of course i do. i was training to be in burnout but i was too young. i’ve had idol training, you know. i’m the complete package. i’m just being wasted.”

“It was rough seeing them go through it when I was mentoring last season. And yeah… pretty embarrassing, too. Hopefully they have a better go this time around, but after last season sweeping most of them out during the first eliminations, I can’t say I think it’s likely.”

“welll... at least if they all get eliminated first round, they won’t have to struggle through a whole season,” she pointed out.

“they’re not your real fans if they don’t follow you wherever you go next. and if they’re making a big stink about things, they’re clearly loyal to you and not the company or your group,” songyi pointed out

“well, they’d better. because i appreciate the comments, but i’d appreciate having a thriving career even more,” ahki snorted.

“You aren’t wrong,” Yeong stated, then shaking his head. “I guess I understand the thought that ‘all publicity is good publicity’, but really. They keep fumbling the ball so hard.”

“i mean.... that’s the saying. but now that it’s happened for a third time? it’s just plain embarrassing.”

he squeezed her hand, looking up at her. “please don’t start any fights, ahki– that’s just going to get you in more trouble,” he sighed. “you’ve only got max three more comebacks before you’re free. you’re strong and determined. if anyone can grin and bear it and push through, its you.”

she shifted to her knees, taking his face in her hands and kissing the tip of his nose before looking him in the eye. “don’t worry. i pick my fights wisely-- i am my father’s daughter, after all. and anyone whose ass i kick will know to keep their mouth shut,” she answered (only joking a little bit). “i wonder where i should go after liberty...”

“yeah, but your company fucked up so bad that it got your fans in your corner! that’s good, right? they’re getting really mad at your mistreatment– i’m pretty sure they even lost stocks last time!”

“well....let’s hope that when i leave this mess of a company, their passion is still there and they follow me wherever i go next. i honestly deserve a break, and they deserve to see me thriving after sticking by me for so long.”
